Cook the Book: '100 Best Vegetarian Recipes'

Ooooh, ourside of mattar or palak paneer, these middle eastern zucchini fritters I make (celebrating the thousands of other renditions of the same), rendolent with scallions and dill, enriched w/ toasted nuts and feta. Tzaziki atop.

Wait, then there are my Ukranian Grandma Vera's pierogies, with the over-the-top finish of panfrying in butter with sour cream and browned onions alongside .... aaaaah ....

Pierogies! My Ukranian grandmother, Vera, did not visit us in the states too often, but when she did, she cocooned in the kitchen and cooked up a storm. The pierogies were the best--stuffed with wonderously overcooked mashed potates, cheddar cheese--and the boiled dumplings smothered in browned onions and sour cream. She introduced us to other Ukranian classics too, of course, but that one struck my young heart (and stomach) soooo deeply. Comfort food doesn't get much better than that. :) (Well, there *is* mac&cheese ....

help: great eats near pismo beach ?

I second the recommendation for The Cracked Crab. Wonderful shellfish, great fun. See, www.crackedcrab.com. I spent a week in Pismo Beach last August, ate @ Mo's, and some of the resort hotels, but the $ I spent @ the Cracked Crab was by far the best food investment of all the meals we had. Enjoy!

My own tomato sauces, meat sauces (I know, I know, but I believe it can be safely done w/ enough education and the "right" equipment), local tuna, and corn.

Ooohh, to recreate the canned creamed corn of childhood, but done fresh, and by you. :) And, to stand tall, and move out of the comforting shadows of freezer jams, into the light of Other Processing Methods. :)

A new dish I just made up that I call creamy eggplant ziti, it is out of this world delicious. One everyone, even the eggplant haters kept going back for more of.

My favorite meatless meal would have to be the Lebanese stew a good friend of mine made for a dinner party once - such a hearty mix of carrots, potatoes, tomatoes, leeks, onions, radishes, and spices, and I really couldn't have enough. Now that I have the recipe I make it all the time as a real comfort food type of meal. Thanks!

I'm not a good cook and kind of lazy, so my favorite is an easy-to-make PBJ sandwich. If I win the book, perhaps I could improve my skills.

Korean soybean soup dwenjang jjigae. It's heartier and more fermented than miso soup and a great comfort food. Yumm, makes me want some now ^_^
