Sweet Technique: How To Make Pumpkin Puree
@ell.victor- I just saw on a blog I follow (different but the same, whoop) a 80's can of Libby's pumpkin and today's can- on the front of the 80's can is "solid packed pumpkin" and today's version omits the solid packed- looks like the same stuff. Hope this helps!
Chain Reaction: Bennigan's
I had a heavenly Monte Cristo at this location once, just lightly fried and crisp but not overly so, and the powdered sugar and raspberry jam just set it off. I ordered one once in Indianapolis, at our remaining Bennigans, and promptly cured myself of that craving, thank goodness.
Served: Regulars: Young, Old, Wonderful, And Terrible
There's a food truck that I hit so often that the owner knows me by name, and when I sent my (look alike) sister to pick up lunch, she asked about me. This makes me happy in a "oh my god I'm a stalker but I love your food" kinda way. It definitely makes me swing business their way, tweet/facebook/yelp about them, and generally be a cheerleader for them. It does not make me think I'm so special to not have to wait in line, get freebies or generally get away with bad behavior. It's the same with a lot of places I go- if I like it, I usually go a lot, but I will act like every time is my first and not expect people to know me.

Hangover Helper: Waffle House Hash Browns
When me and my friends would shut down the strip club, we'd go across the street and hit the WH- scattered, smothered and covered for me, with cheesy eggs- and eat with the now off-work strippers. By the time our meal ended, I'd be cool to drive, no hangover necessary. Aw, I miss those days.

Weekend Book Giveaway: 'Roadfood'
I third the hearts for Lamberts- I crave their rolls. My favorite, is in TN on I-70 exit 40- Stans! Where else can you get 3 different food groups with meat in them? Their cracklin' bread is insanely good.
Drink the Book: 'Jelly Shot Test Kitchen'
Not creative flavor wise, but we usually do 'em in syringes, and squirt 'em into each others mouths (giving a shot). Obviously, we need some new ideas.
Cook the Book: 'Food Trucks'
We are getting our first wave of food trucks in Indianapolis outside of tacos, which have been around forever here. Duos owns my heart, with a veggie and non veggie option daily- so super good. They did their own take of sliders- lil' burgers griddled to perfection with caramelized onions and blue cheese on top- oh so good that I dream about eating them.
Check Out the New Serious Eats Mobile Site
I'm on the BlackBerry Curve and I was using the mobile site beta before, but now I'm getting the same 'can't see comments' thing. Also, all of my headers are cut off- I can see where they should be, but the text is obscured.
Has anybody cooked with Kraft Cooking Creme yet?
I bought some with a coupon when it came out- 50 cents well spent. I fixed some mango chicken with a new salad dressing- turned out to be way too sweet. The cooking creme saved it from being dessert to sweet and a little salty- perfect. My family wants me to make it again asap.
HOW OFTEN DO YOU GO, AND HOW LONG DO YOU STAY IN THERE?!
Grocery shopping falls only behind bookstores as my favorite place to spend money. My mom raised us on going for one store for staples (Aldi), one for produce, a butcher for meats and various specialty stores for different things. I consistently drop upwards of 50 bucks in Fresh Market, even when I just stopped in for a quick snack, and don't get me started on our local Farmers Markets. Oh god, the money I spend just wanting to try everything!
I live in Indy and have family in Cinci- Jungle Jims owns my heart. I'm only glad I don't like closer so I have some disposable income.
School Food we actually LIKE...
My mom was a lunch lady in grade school- I remember getting leftover hot and cold packs and the chocolate milk. By junior high I ate a salad every day, we had a grilled chicken salad that I wish I could get now. In high school I worked in a teachers cafe- we served a salad bar on Tuesdays, a casserole on Wednesday and a plated dish on Thursday. It was super good!
Whatever you want, what would you eat right now?
My favorite Caribbean restaurant closed- I would wish for one more round of chicken curry with rice and peas, buttered veggies and the lil cornbread suckers, or their killer lunch buffet.
Seriously Delicious Super Bowl Party Giveaway: Baby Back Ribs and Pulled Pork
I sit on the couch.
Belly full and soul refreshed,
That'll do pig, yum!
Cookbooks you love ...but don't use?
I have Julia Child and Company and Julia Child and More Company- I love them to pieces but dishes like eggs in aspic don't do it for my family. Also, Todd Wilbur's Top Secret Recipes are good for food history, but I rarely cook out of them, being a lazy person and knowing I can buy what I wanted.
Seriously Delicious Holiday Giveaway: Southside Market Sausage
King Ribs and Bar-B-Q Heaven in Indianapolis. Yum!
Seriously Delicious Holiday Giveaway: Zingerman's Praise the Lard Gift Box
I went to Mississippi last year, and on the way, we stopped in some small Alabama town that had a gas station with a restaurant attached. I got a slab of ribs that was the best I've had ever. I'll probably never get back there, so I'm glad to have gotten them once.
Food-related new year resolutions
I already started on my new food goal- branching out into new styles of cooking and tastes. I bought home a jar of butter chicken sauce to my mom (gotta start somewhere) and miso paste, and we've been having fun just going groceryu shopping and exploring.
Thanksgiving Leftovers- What did you make?
I mixed some stuffing with sausage and eggs in a frying pan, and we had the whole mush with leftover crescent rolls. Plus, we've been nibbing in the fridge for days now.
What is your worst cooking disaster?
I have done lots of things with seasonings (made cornbread that tasted like pizza dough because of my copious use of basil) and make coffee once that could be turned upside down (I used one cup of grounds per cup of coffee for our teachers' cafe in high school. Poor teachers) but I think that prize goes to the drink my sister and I made for my dad one night, thinking that he should have one like on tv. The problem was that my parents don't drink and didn't have alcohol in the house. No prob, thought I, I'll just use this rubbing alcohol that my mom has. It was the wintergreen kind too. Fortunately my mom smelled the finished product and tossed it before my dad even knew about it. I love my daddy, I swear!
Chicago: Nancy's, the Creator of Stuffed Pizza, Still Putting Out Good Pies
One of my friends works for the Nancy's in Fishers, Indiana. He bought us a pie for our Super Bowl party- oh my lord, I can't even think about pizza for this month, and I just had one slice. Which really, is all you need. So delicious!
Cook the Book: 'Good Eats: The Early Years'
I have lots of favorite memories, with both sides of my family and all, but my favorite year was the one recently when I ordered a pre-fab turkey meal (I do add homemade sides, I can't fight with a turkey), we won a turkey in some contest and my mom's cousin smoked one for us. Yum! I'm a carnivore and it was good!
Long Flights - BYOF?
It depends on when I'm flying (I'm a sleeper) but if it's a midday flight, I definitely bring something. Yummy tempura rolls, sandwiches, my mom's homemade cornbread with corn and sundried tomatoes in it- as long as it can be wrapped up and won't get me glares (I've had envious stares and comments at how good something smelled) then I try it. I'm not a raw onion eater, and I wouldn't do anything with a clam sauce, but everything else, including stuff with forks, is fair game! I'm flying next week- now I'm wanting to bring a super salad.
25 Random Things about Food and Me
Always late to the party...
1. I have to try something new at a restaurant if I see it on the menu, even if it's a chain and the new thing is just a variation on something old.
2. I do not eat Hostess snacks that involve filling, period. The idea sickens me.
3. On a related note, I can't eat certain kinds of cake icing. I usually request a centre piece of cake when I can't get out of taking a slice, and then eat the cake upside down, leaving the icing on the plate.
4. I would much rather eat a piece of fried chicken than a candy bar any day.
5. Growing up in Indiana, I didn't have sushi until I was grown, but once I started eating it, I got my dad and sister to eat it. Now I have to sneak my packs of sushi in.
6. I get frustrated with people that won't eat anything new, but since this describes fully 75% of my friends, I hide it well.
7. My comfort foods change with the season. Right now, it's anything from a local Cajun/Creole place in town (go Yats!)
8. I can burn myself out on foods and never be able to eat them again. At my job, the only food choices were canned soups. My favorite was Chunky Clam Chowder. It's been 4 years since I've been able to eat a can. I've even purchased them with the intention of eating them and wussed out.
9. I love, love, love, Philly's salmon cream cheese and will eat it on crackers, veggies... and possibly by itself, with a spoon. Yum!
10. Although I pretend to be an alcohol snob, I'm totally a cheap drunk and do drink things like Jack and Coke when I go out.
11. I used to eat all my meat well well done (like, almost burnt) but now I enjoy a medium well.
12. I used to be an omnivore, but now I've cut way back on my red meat. I eat tons of seafood, and enjoy meatless dishes.
13. I don't like people to watch me eat if they themselves are not eating. I mean, really don't like.
14. Soy sauce is another food group as far as I'm concerned. I put it on and in everything, except desserts.
15. Sweet and savory food cannot touch. That's why dessert plates are made.
16. I love to cook, and love to bake more, but I don't have the time to both as much as I would like, and it depresses me.
17. I am a true grazer and nibbler, which is good and bad.
18. I hate hate hate okra, but try to eat some every once in a while to see if I still hate it. So far, yes.
19. I went on a no hot dog phase for around five years because of stinkymeat.com. Nothing should look like that.
20. I boycotted Nabisco because of their tobacco ownership, and I was sad because they make Chicken in a Biskit, and that was my favorite. Now even though my strike is over, I still haven't had a box. That's probably for the best.
21. Breakfast is something I can eat anytime. Yes.
22. I really try to support local restaurants, but I get wicked McDonalds cravings.
23. As far as I'm concerned, the best 4 am after the bar food is french fries.
24. Ben and Jerry's is food of the gods, as far as I'm concerned.
25. When I think about it, I bring the same foods for lunch every day- a sandwich, a frozen entree, fruit or fruit cup, and two drinks.
Who Should Pay at a Birthday Dinner?
What I did for my parents' anniversary party was send out the invitations with the wording that we were asking their friends to join us as we surprised them with a dinner, meaning that my sister and I paid for our and our parents' food, and no one elses. I wouldn't have thought of making any of our guests pay for any of our food. However, since I was making it clear that we were just paying for our parents, I wouldn't have offered for pay for any of theirs. We all did seperate checks, and it was a great time. It also helps that we invited people that are my parents' age, and it was their 30th anniversary. As for the whole split check thing, it always ends in tears, so I try to avoid it, after paying 50 dollars for a meal twice in a row for a pasta dish and IHOP.
