Weekend Book Giveaway: My Milk Toof

Love My Milk Toof! One of my faves is when they get their bunk bed and they both wanted the top bunk.

Japanese Snacks: Pretz

My friend just brought me a pack of Shark's Fin Soup Pretz from Hong Kong. He thought it was imitation flavored when he bought it but turns out, they use actual ground shark's fin! I won't eat it on principle but he says it doesn't taste like anything.

Finally, one of my favorite vegetables makes it into the limelight! My family used to grow them for the Ranch 99 markets in southern California way back when.

How to Make a Spanish Tortilla

Great post! Tortilla is definitely a comfort food. I just made a version with roasted poblano and anaheim peppers yesterday. There are so many ways of making tortilla. My senora in Seville used to deep fry her cubes of potatoes, adding another layer of texture. Oddly enough, she never liked adding onions.

One thing to note when making tortilla is that you need to let the potato and onion mixture cool significantly before adding the eggs otherwise you scramble them before you can even get started.

Taste Test: Granola Bars (and Friends)

Kashi's TLC line of crunchy granola bars have always been my favorite. They are not too sweet and they don't lock down my jaw from the chewiness. @winternutt, I do wish they were a little cheaper as well.

'Brutta ma Buona' in Taiwan, Part 1: Fan Tuan

Taiwanese street food is the best! And don't get me started on breakfast. My favorite is the three tier sandwiches on white bread with layers of egg, ham, cucumber and that sweet Asian style mayo.

Introduce Yourself!

Fun thread! I'm am yet another lurker, currently in the San Francisco area but I started reading Serious Eats last year when I was in NYC for a spell and wanted insider info on where to eat.

As far as food is concerned, I'm mostly a culinary mutt. Parents are from Taiwan, but I lived in Liberia when I was a child so I got hooked on meat stews, fufu, and palm butter, as well as kibbeh from Lebanese ex-pats. Then you add on living in Southern California with great Korean, Mexican, Persian, and Vietnamese, and Chinese...

I cook rather often but I'm cravings driven so planning meals and following recipes are not the order of the day. Mostly it's seeing what I feel like eating compared to what I have in the fridge and the fall out from that exercise turns into dinner.

Very cute...slightly morbid. I'll never think of unicorns or cupcakes the same way again. But I'll still eat cupcakes without flinching.

Video: Eric Ripert Visits Costco on 'Avec Alan'

We'll probably find Eric Ripert sneaking back into Costco someday because that place can be addictive. I'll admit that sometimes I am aghast at the sheer volume of consumption that supports these behemoths.

@1stmakearoux: Agreed, Costco does rank higher than the likes of Walmart/Sams Club in terms of being a good employer. Their employee turnover rate has always much lower than average compared to other retailers.

The crust is the best part! I intentionally put in less filling for the pies I bake just so I have a higher crust to filling ratio.
