@Frozen Charlotte, I completely agree. I don't think there's a thing wrong with a 50+ woman being as sexual as she wants, and prudishness has *never* worked in this society, or anyone elses, for that matter. In addition, I don't see how anyone could have seen her pants falling down as being sexual, but then again, if that's your hangup, you'll sex everywhere, in everything. Hey, knock yourself out.
I like the woman, because she doesn't take herself seriously. I'd probably never eat most of what she cooks, because of the high grease content, but I still enjoy watching the woman. If my pants fell down in front of an audience, I'd hope that I had the good graces to laugh it off, instead of pretending to be mortified. I see plenty of fake, stiff people on a daily basis - it's nice to see someone who is comfortable in her skin.
Pantry 'Ghosts': Do You Have Them?
-One jar of some fake-meat gluten item. I've had it for several years, and I have no idea why I bought it to the new house. I should just admit that I'm never gonna eat the stuff.
-One can of grass jelly, which has traveled to at least two houses. When I lived in NYC, one of my favorite restaurants in Chinatown served soy milk with grass jelly. Now that I'm upstate, I can't find it to save my life, so I had the brilliant idea that I would make my own. I doubt that's gonna happen.
-Red lentils. I actually like red lentils, so I'm not sure why this has survived four addresses and seven years. I'm guessing it's because at one point, I over-did it with the curry cooking. Yes, dried beans last forever, but right now they're just taking up space.
-Bag of frozen brussels sprouts. I like them, but they're in the back of the freezer, so I never see them.
Snapshots from the UK: Parma Violets
I've loved Chowards since I was a kid, and I'm really sorry that I can't find any outside the NYC area. I'll have to see if I can get my hands on some Parma Violets.

Baking stone sub?
I've had the same pizza stone for years. Since I had no idea that it was good for baking other things, I've only used it about ten times, since I don't make pizza that much. This thread has made me want to research the many things I can do with my stone. I don't even remember paying that much money for it, but it was definitely worth whatever I spent.

The best kitchen tip I've received was when I learned how to peel garlic by pressing the side of the knife into the garlic, until it "smashes." That way, part of my work is done, as it's already begun to break apart. I use a lot of garlic, and it saves me a lot of time.
James Beard Awards: A Sea of White Faces
Okay, has this entire post been about some dude named "DocChuck?" and since when does having "Plymouth Rock roots" give anyone more rights to say whatever they want to about the U.S., and everyone who disagrees should just shut up and deal with it, or leave? Oh yeah, we need more people like you in the food industry.
Bottom line is this - if you disagree that race should be discussed in a food blog, then read a different blog - no one is begging you to stick to this one. Even better - write your own, and discuss whatever you choose.

I love my rice cooker. I eat rice at almost every meal, and I can just set it, leave it alone, and go about my other tasks, until the rice is done. I can also broths and spices to the rice, for interesting combinations.
Why Nigel Slater Is Not Vegetarian
While I understand Nigel's sentiment, I really don't get his reasoning. I don't eat red meat, not because I don't like the taste of it, but because it has been proven to be less healthy than other foods, and my family has too big a history of obesity and other health-related issues. I didn't become a vegetarian, back in the day, because I didn't like the taste of meat, neither did any of my other veggie pals. We don't even take an "ethical" stance of anyone's food choices (I really don't care what other people eat, just as long as they keep their hands out of my plate); we just wanted a healthier lifestyle. In fact, I don't even know why people feel the need to defend their food choices. He's a grown man - he can eat whatever he pleases.
Baking stone sub?
Just bought 4 tiles at Lowes for $1.50. They do not use the term quarry tile. Try asking for unfinished mexican tile. HD had nothing and I tried several tile stores and no one appears to have anything larger than 12x12 any more.
Instead of an oven, I use a three burner NG grill which easily holds a temp of 600 F. Trust me, that extra 100 degrees makes all the difference for Pizza. Thin crust cooks in 4 minutes flat.
Whether using tiles or a stone, buying a small wooden pizza peel is even more important if you are going to do 2 pizza or more quickly and cook directly on the tile/stone.
Pantry 'Ghosts': Do You Have Them?
My pantry ghosts hide items prior to my going to the market. Hence the five, yes five, large bottles of soy sauce and three bottles of oyster sauce. I love making Asian food, but there is no way I can use all that up!
Pantry 'Ghosts': Do You Have Them?
I just got a brand new pantry ghost last night – but only because it's a food we're not accustomed to eating: fresh cilantro/coconut chutney made for us by the dinner guest who came over last night. We have about a pint of it, I think. It's great stuff, and the guy who made it says it goes with anything, so maybe it won't linger for long.
Pantry 'Ghosts': Do You Have Them?
This is hysterical! After some thought, and a jogged memory from some other comments, I submit the following:
-Canned asparagus. NASTY and I can't remember why I bought it. It's been with me at least 4 years. I can't bring myself to give it to the Boy Scouts or the postal carrier when they come around.
-2 cans of whole cranberry sauce from 2 Thanksgivings ago. I offer to bring the sauce and someone else has beat me to it.
-Pomegranate martini mix with a tin of salt for rimming the glass. A present from our neighbors 2 years ago.
-A squeeze bottle of white cookie icing. I made Christmas cookies once. It sits in my cabinet imploring me to be used again.
-Manishewitz matzoh ball soup mix. I think it's about 3 or 4 years old.
-I think I also have some hot chocolate mix in a glass jar from some holiday gift box from a relative. I know it will suck, but I just can't toss it.
I know if I searched our cabinets, I'd find more. Kind of scary!
Pantry 'Ghosts': Do You Have Them?
My mom has spices from my Grandma's kitchen, which she brought home (along with the G-ma) back in 1990. Yes, that's right, 20 year old spices. Or they would be 20 years old, except that my Grandma bought them in the 70's.
I keep trying to make her throw them away, but at this point I think she's keeping them as a momento.
Pantry 'Ghosts': Do You Have Them?
I have a few jars of homemade jam in my fridge. I keep all that stuff in the fridge drawers because I use them so infrequently. I opened it the other day to discover about six jars unopened of jams (flavors I do not like). Sigh. I must toss them. I'm sure there has to be an expiration of some sort for homemade jams.

Pantry 'Ghosts': Do You Have Them?
I've got a can of Chef Boyardee Spaghetti-Os that's been in my pantry for about five years, a friend who's since passed away brought it to me as a joke hostess "gift" when attending a dinner party at my house. I can't bear to part with it, since it makes me smile and think of him when i see it.

@blizcheetah - if you feel like making your own granola, you can use your shredded coconut in it!

Pantry 'Ghosts': Do You Have Them?
yes. a bag of shredded coconut my husband got for a recipe he never made and refuses to let me make. i really dont know what to do with shredded coconut. if you have any suggestions, please recommend!
Pantry 'Ghosts': Do You Have Them?
My ghosts are from former housemates and are things that I'd never buy but that I can't bring myself to get rid of: a large can of mackerel, canned green beans (thinking of the texture icks me out), generic mac and cheese, and expired cranberry sauce that we resolved to open at thanksgiving but managed to forget about. Any ideas for the mackerel?

A 20 year-old gallon jar of pickled jalepeno peppers. A nice conversation piece when hosting a Mexican fiesta.
Instant oatmeal circa 2005. Probably the last time I had my cholesteral checked.
Whole wheat spaghetti circa 2006.

I'm going to assume those who think Ms. Dean is "oversexed" have never been comfortable with their own sexuality. She has done everything right in raising her children, working hard to make a life for them, takes care of and loves her family and the people who work for her. She is a true Southern woman and we love her! If y'all can't stand to listen to her, look at her or like her, well "My, My".

Old Sonora Whole Green Chilis. The can is so old that it has no expiration date. The previous owners of the house, from whom the can was inherited, were notorious dumpster divers. It is beginning to get a tinge of rust around the top and may even be bulging a little. Certainly it will never be eaten, but it does have a whimsical fascination.

I have some saffron I've had for over 10 years. I've never used it and don't know if it's still safe or edible but hate to discard anything so expensive.
The saffron is from before I started using a Sharpie to put the purchase date on everything that goes in the pantry, fridge, or freezer. Try it -- you'll be surprised how comforting it is.

In the words of Niles Crane (of Frazier fame) " Now I have to go poke out my mind's eye!" However, it does seem a bit more palatable if I imagine she is wearing Spanx and it was NOT bare hiney.
On older women being feisty--when I was growing up I used to spend summers with my great aunt who was then in her 80s and she had this huge stack of True Story magazines (the stories have titillating titles and lead ins, but in the end have a moral) next to her bed and I thought that was REALLY naughty! I didn't go snooping around her room too much, for fear what else I might find. She also told lots of off-color jokes, but I always laughed at those, the ones I understood anyway. Anyway, she died at 103, and when I last saw her at 100, she hadn't changed a bit! Feisty, indeed. But I will always have a fond place in my heart for her.

I should probably throw out that giant bottle of apple juice from 11 months ago. My mother bought 4 bottles when I was sick and couldn't eat solids. The idea of drinking apple juice after consuming nearly nothing else for weeks makes me nauseated, so I probably won't be drinking it.
Pantry 'Ghosts': Do You Have Them?
Wow. Some of this stuff I have never heard of.
My own pantry/fridge ghosts...
-- Jar of olives, purchased for FIL's martinis. He's only visited once in the past two years; those olives are still there.
-- Four kinds of salsa, purchased or gifted for parties. I don't like salsa, so they stay until the next fiesta.
-- Stirrings "Simple Margaritas" mix. Ick. Maybe my dear husband bought it?
-- Artichoke spinach dip that expired last September.
-- The freezer is where stock ingredients go to die. I have never made stock, but I know I should and I keep meaning to ... Ina has a great recipe in "Back to Basics" that I am determined to attempt.

I thought it was pretty funny myself. We all (people in general) need to loosen up a bit and learn to laugh at ourselves and all the silly things in life.
Snapshots from the UK: Parma Violets
I've tried quite a few different brands and types of violet sweets (including Chowards, and those pastilles that come in the little oval tins), and love that they don't taste like every other thing out there. Most of them do taste a bit like soap, but that doesn't bother me very much.
Snapshots from the UK: Parma Violets
My family in England sends me as many tubes as they can, as often as they can. I'm surprised I don't have cavities, I ate about a metric ton of these as a kid.
For those who don't like the ridiculous sugar content of parma violets, try Leone violet pastilles, they taste exactly the same but without being ridiculously sweet AND they come in adorable tins.
Chowards is a poor substitute and should only be used in dire circumstances.
