Do you eat a bed-time snack? What is it?

I used to be able to eat and eat without gaining . . . .at my age I shouldn't do that anymore, but I also can't quit my bedtime snack routine. Give me anything chocolate, or ice cream, or that big box of frozen cream puffs that I bought for a baby shower and forgot to thaw for serving. (yeah, sure!). Um, lately, in an effort to cut out the full fat noshing, I have been buying frozen fruit bars and lemon sorbet. Makes me feel less full, and less guilty.

Has anyone ever heard of a "doughboy"? No, not THAT doughboy :-)

I've made what I call a doughboy for 30 years . . .it is basically bread dough stuffed with seasoned ground beef, cabbage or kraut, onions and cheese and baked. I have heard it called kraut burger and runza among other things. But I've always known this portable sandwich as a doughboy. Yummy comfort food.

It's been over 10 years since I've had a doughboy, but I used to have the recipe nailed. The filling is chicken breast, cream cheese, cheddar, colby, and scallions. I can't remember exactly what I used to season the chicken, but a little onion powder, garlic powder, oregano, and s&p would probably get you in the ballpark. I might have to stop in Esperanto tomorrow.

oh my god.. delicious! I got married in Saratoga last may, and after the reception we made my little cousins run over to Esperanto's to get doughboys for everyone at the afterparty- so damn good.
no idea exactly what's in there and not really sure I want to know! it seems like cream cheese, scallions, some chicken, all like you mentioned.... possibly some magic.. put a little hot sauce on there and savor the flavor. i can't figure out any of the other ingredients!
After a night out drinking in Saratoga, nothing hits the spot better than a doughboy.

Doughboys are the best! I just ate two of them this past weekend..I do believe they contain the ingredients you have mentioned, but no one can figure out the whole recipe. Very top secret!! Good luck and post something if you figure it out!

Here's a picture.

There is some discussion about what's actually in there, but there is no full recipe available. Do some tinkering and let us know how it works out. Dough boys rock!

It depends on the day. If it's a salty-craving day, I reach for some dill pickles. If it's a sweet-craving day, there's nothing better than chocolate milk, eaten with a spoon rather than drank straight out of the glass. Brings back all kinds of nostalgic memories.

In the Maritimes provinces in Canada, a 'doughboy' is a dumpling dropped on top of bubbling stew. The lid is put in place and the whole deal simmers till the dumplings are set. There is always the suspense as to whether the stew will stick to the bottom of the pan as the doughboys cook.

Doughboy is an outdated slang term for an American infantryman, best known from its use in World War I, although it potentially dates back to the Mexican-American War of 1846-48.

I never fall asleep early (that is, if I am asleep by 3 am, it's a good night for me), so if I eat at 7 pm (which is when we usually have supper), I may get really hungry by midnight - 1 am. I usually have some cheese and fruit or olives, maybe a glass of wine. If I happen to have some pistachio ice cream in the freezer, it's good too. It does vary though between sweet and savoury, and there's no telling which one I may crave on any particular night:-) Sometimes I may have weird cravings (Cluck-U wings, for example-:)), but most nights, the cheese and fruit/olive plate works for me.

Any type of left-over. Any baked item I have.

Hey Wendy, that sounds exactly what my husband makes and it's great. He calls it bierox.

Sorry, I can't chime in on the "doughboy" part -- I only know of The Doughboy (hee hee) and a rubber representation we once had that one of my ferrets had torn a hole through its foot because he loved to grab it by it's foot with his teeth and race around the house with it. I think he was abnormally cruel to the toy, not because he hated their products, because we'd always throw it in the tub when it was bath time, which he hated with all his being. You could see the steam rising from his ears as he would stand there in the tub fiercely shooting laser beams at us with his glare.

I just downed a half-bottle of wine. Check with me tomorrow to see if I'm sorry. :-)

Sometimes I'll crave things in the late evening and other times I'm not interested at all. I suppose the most usual would be some sort of fruit or a scoop of ice cream.

If I've had a dessert after dinner I'm much less likely to want a snack later at night.

Whatever fruit I bought but didn't finish off earlier. However, tonight, it was half a doughnut, since my husband saw the "Happy National Doughnut Day" banner on the SE home page. He said we had to celebrate his favorite holiday.

I love a good, cold pasta salad. Cold olive oil and feta cheese is like my weakness.

A huge cup of coffee before bed (I am impervious to caffeine, I swear.) and a piece (or three) of biscotti is nice too.

As a kid I always had frozen juice (we made our own popsicles) or Grandma's hot chocolate (a chocolate bar melted, with cream added and cinnamon.)

for me, doughboys are fluffy dumpling-ish balls dropped into and cooked with stew or split pea soup. yum.
