Hangover Helper: Vegan Frito Pie

Great. 8pm on a saturday evening in Germany (translates into: stores not going to be open again until 7-8am monday morning-ish AND no chance of having Fritos any time soon, as they haven't found their way across the pond), and now I'm craving something unhealthy. Thanks a lot *sigh*

Video: Degrading German McDonald's Commercial, According to Burger King

Until a few years ago, you weren't allowed to show competing products in an ad for something in Germany - it's quite surprising that was made legal. But if a company claims the ad's degrading, then well... yup. No chance it'll be aired on TV...

Not that Germany's the place to be looking for great burgers.

Wake and Bake: Stollen

Traditionally, stollen has to rest wrapped in foil and stored in a cool but not cold place (e.g. on top of the bedroom closet or something) for 4-8 weeks before consumption. Yes, it is a lot of work, but hey... you have to start in October anyway, so it isn't adding any stress to the pre-holiday-prep :D

Just don't really get why it is posted under "wake and bake", as it really benefits from prior planning.

Weekend Cook and Tell: Cookie Season

I spent the weekend baking and decorating cut-out cookies and Spitzbuben (also known as Linzer cookies, I think - basically two cut-out cookies, a solid one and one with a smaller circular hole on the inside) sandwiched together with raspbery-red-currant jelly. Can't wait for 2-3 days to pass, till the Spitzbuben are ready to eat *sigh*

Weekend Cook and Tell: Winter Greens

Savoy Cabbage - shredded, quickly sauteed with butter, chili flakes, the seeds of a vanilla bean and some salt and pepper, tossed with leftover grilled chicken. Love to take leftovers to work the next day!

Oven-roasted turkey legs with orange slices, halved plums, thyme and balsamic vinegar.

SE Staff Picks: What's Your Worst Hangover Food?

Anything that isn't on my hangover-food list. Especially not oranges (hubbies go-to hangover food), the smell is enough to make me hide in bed again.

(And said list is rather short: bacon&eggs, shin ramyeon, fried chicken or a croissant with copious amounts of nutella.)

Cook the Book: 'The Family Meal'

Our "family meals" consisted of leftovers from the lunch special or pasta of some sort or another - never understood why we couldn't have mac&cheese.

Bake the Book: 'Flour,' by Joanne Chang

Always check the oven temperature if you're not familiar with the oven... or even a tried and tested recipe is prone to fail.

South Korea - midnight shopping! It's usually only meant for resellers and you won't get anything unless you're willing to buy bulk (everything from clothes to shoelaces, dried fish, spices or boxes full of dashi leaves, salted and grilled nori, and the list goes on), but the streetfood stalls in between, selling snacks that encourage drinking alcohol (or that make you crave alkohol, or the foods you crave when you're drunk - depens on whom you're talking to) in copious amounts and the atmosphere at night is great! And if you really try to look out for your waistline, you can still get freshly pressed fruit juice or cut up fruits on a stick - though I'd recommend trying everything else.

Though the fish market (Noryangjin) comes pretty close. But only if you can go to sleep by the time you return to your hotel - because you will be drinking soju with all that raw fish (hoe)!

Going to Germany! What to eat there and to bring back?

Try a Laugencroissant - it packs a lot of calories, but even the dear Mr. Lebovitz couldn't resist on a trip to Germany!

Depending on the region you're traveling to - the local brews, every region has it's own kind of beer. Though you're better off beer-wise in southern Germany (shhhh - folks from northern or mid-Germany might think differently).

Göttingen is pretty much in the center of Germany, close to Hannover. Beer-wise you might want to try the Einbecker Ur-Bock (which has a long history of the people in Einbeck claiming the Bock-Beer originates from Einbeck, rather than southern Germany - it get's people to fight and never talk to each other again, don't try to look to deep into that conflict), which is a little on the stronger side, but heck... Go for it at least once!
And for food... Well, the region around Hannover has some eel and game-centered dishes, which I can't say too much about, not being very fond of either... But other than that, you should be able to find pretty much anything - Italian food in Germany will be a lot better than what they try to sell as Mexican, Tex-Mex or Asian food of any sort, you'll probably be better off trying to eat your way through lots and lots and lots of homemade sandwiches. Because, yes - the bread's awesome.

HELA CURRY GEWURZ KETCHUP SCHARF...HEILIG SCHEIßE!!

Well, I wouldn't compare it to Velveeta - but it's actually nice to have around sometimes - e.g. for things like baked beans (Kay from Kayotic Kitchen has a really nice recipe that has curried ketchup and lots of bacon in it) and it's consumed in copious amounts at birthday parties (or outdoor-parties in general) to mask the "flavor" of the cheap sausages and meats everyone has brought along. ;)

IKEA Food: Have you dined there?

In Germany, Ikea is among the three largest chains selling food - probably making more revenue by selling little things like napkins and candles as well as food than by selling furniture.

I don't really like eating there - but I have a lot of friends who go there just for the hot dogs that are sold between the cash registers and the exit.

Frozen Mangoes - excellent ice-cream substitution, could eat those for three meals a day.

Dinner Tonight: Shrimp and Scallion Pancake

I tend to use half regular rice flour, half ap - gives the pancake a springy mouthfeel while being crispy, and they are still edible when cold. When using rice flour only, the consistency moves a little to close to gummy, when there are leftovers.

On airline food: the best passenger complaint letter ever

"No sane person would serve a desert with a tomato would they."

Well, in case nobody considered... Tomatoes ARE considered to be a fruit, and in certain parts of this world they are served with a sprinkling of sugar, rather than salt. And in S. Korea you'd get halved Cherry Tomatoes in your Patbingsu (Dessert from sweet condensed milk, shaved ice and sweet bean paste); so I wouldn't quite agree there ;)
