Cook the Book: 'Barefoot Contessa Back to Basics'
White pizza. I keep frozen dough on hand all the time, so it's supremely easy to make.
Cook the Book: 'Roast Chicken and Other Stories'
Chicken Trek was my favorite book in elementary school. If you can find it (it is out of print) read it. Incredibly evocative descriptions of fried chicken, especially for a children's book.
Cook the Book: Win a Copy of 'Cook with Jamie'
Grandmother. Everyone else in the family was a finicky eater so the only way I could be adventuresome in my diet was to beg her to go through cookbooks with me. She still sends me recipes now that she's mastered the interweb.

Italian Fiesta Pizzeria: The Obamas' Chicago Pizza Favorite, Reviewed
Pi is pretty amazing. I can understand why the President elect would rave about it. It's probably the best deep dish in Saint Louis, although my favorite Pizza would have to go to Katie's Pizzeria.

All I can say about Italian Fiesta is this: if they can't use the proper Italian word for "holiday" or "feast"---"festa" instead of the Spanish "fiesta",they can't be that good.BTW, $20 for a pizza is no bargain. If President Obama wants to enjoy a good Pizza, let him come to my birthplace ,NYC,and go to "Totonno's " out in Coney Island (rumored to be the 2nd oldest Pizzeria in the USA-founded around 1900) or "Gentile's" out in Totenville ,Staten Island-where REAL Italians make REAL Pizza! As far as Pi's and the "Broccoli O'Bama",if you tried ordering "yuppie crap" like that in Totonno's,they would look at you like you had 3 eyes in your forehead!

Coming from a St. Louisan raised on Imo's, I now have to say that Pi is the best pizza in the city.

You know this shop will enjoy either the next 4 or 8 years of fame like Pizzaland at the intro to the Sopranos did!

Nice review, Daniel! I loved the part where you get into the Pi pizza actually garnering verified praise from the prez-elect. I'm hungry right now, and that IFP pie looks pretty edible.

Let me try to clear up a little confusion. Only the crust is vegan and like some of you have commented, that's pretty irrelevant when there's meat on the pizza. The vegan crust idea came from am older version of the press release, which can be read here. The current version of the press release, which is linked to in this review doesn't mention vegan.

Thank god Pi isn't St. Louis style pizza. In fact, I'm pretty sure their servers wear t-shirts that say: "Provel doesn't belong on pizza."
Or something to that effect.
Anyway, yeah, Pi is the bomb and the cornmeal crust is pretty tasty and unusual. It's not cheap, but it's worth checking out.

Well, Pi is nice - but it's waay not St. Louis style pizza. ">http://stlouiseats.typepad.com/st_louis_eats_and_drinks_/2008/05/pi.html,/a>
But we're thrilled he liked it.

just... why would one even bother pointing out that the crust is vegan if you're going to top it with bacon and cheese? my grandmother's thanksgiving stuffing is technically vegan, but once you stuff it in the bird it's not, so what's the point in saying it is?

@sfolio -- now i get it. i forgot that deep dish is often made with a butter crust and was wondering what would make a crust non-vegan. ugh.
Italian Fiesta Pizzeria: The Obamas' Chicago Pizza Favorite, Reviewed
It sounded unconventionally delicious until I realized it said vegan. I hope it is just the crust.

The crust is vegan, the bacon and cheese is not.
