Spicy Ginger and French Lentil Soup

Made this tonight - great but with some changes. 1/2 cup ginger just seems like far too much so I used a roughly 2" piece of ginger instead. Added a couple carrots because I had them, and only blended half the onion/ginger up with the carrot juice. Added 1 clove garlic and a few cups of spinach. No yogurt, ham, or bacon - just wheat bread - and used chicken stock instead of beef. Oh - and we dont drink wine so I used some beer instead. Aaaaand that's it :)

French in a Flash: Pasta with Sweet Pea Pistou and Chèvre

This was seriously easy and delicious. I used radiatore which was PERFECT for this consistency of sauce! I also subbed roasted sunflower kernals because i'm not too keen on pine nuts.

Overall I wished it was a bit more garlicky, but even my pea hating husband loved this. Definitely adding this trick to my repertoire :)

What's in your CSA box this week?

This is our first CSA year and the first pickup was Friday. Greens greens greens! We had some red/green leaf lettuce, mesclun mix, spinach, pea shoots (never had these before, pretty yummy!), strawberries, rhubarb, green onions, radishes, and a loaf of bread. Everything's been great so far but I'm looking forward to beets and more variety.

Equipment: Which Food Processor Should I Buy?

http://www1.macys.com/catalog/product/index.ognc?ID=316940&PseudoCat=se-xx-xx-xx.esn_results I have this guy, a KA 7 cup, received as a wedding gift, and I hate it. I was completely floored the first time I used it (making waffle batter) and discovered it wasn't watertight! It just boggles my mind, it's supposed to be 7 cup capacity but only really holds 3 cups max before it leaks.

The other thing that drives me nuts is the rim on the inside of the rim that just fills up with pieces of food and is impossible to clean. And there is no logical reason for there to be a space there... annoying.

That said, I'd love to hear how easy to clean the above models are.

Are There Foods You Can't Keep In The House?

Ice cream. I can restrain myself, but my husband will eat an entire tub without realizing it. (For this reason, we splurge on Ben & Jerrys or Hagen Daaz maybe once a month, since the containers are smaller and therefore there is less harm to be done...)

The United States of Pizza: Where to Eat Pizza in California (Part 1, Northern California)

We live on the east coast, but one of my good friends in Oakland lives a block away from this place: http://www.arizmendibakery.org/ Seems very similar to Cheeseboard - it's worker run, and they do the you-don't-get-a-choice daily pizza special thing. We always make a point to eat there at least once while we're visiting, it beats the best pizza in Pittsburgh!

Quiz: How Much Do You Know About Spring Vegetables?

60% as well.

I think the asparagus question is a bit misleading - after the initial growth required, doesn't it grow back more regularly? (Hopefully that is phrased vaguely enough not to ruin anyone's fun...)

Grocery Self-Checkout Lanes: Way or No Way?

I love them but ONLY if my husband comes along on the shopping trip.... otherwise I am so distracted by scanning that, no matter what, a "helpful" employee will come along and bag my groceries in 142 plastic bags instead of using the reusable ones that I left near the bagging area. Or they will put a gallon of milk in one bag, eggs in one, and cereal in another... then everything else in the remaining 139 plastic bags.

The Heckman Method for Putting Candles on a Birthday Cake

"Design Fancy is a series of short stories about fictional designers who make fictional things. The stories (and the objects) are by Matt Brown, a freelance designer who splits his time between Michigan and Genoa."

I wish this was really from the 1950s, but its still clever and made me smile. :)

Alton Brown's Sardine-Avocado Sandwiches

My husband begged me to make him this! I have to admit, I always thought sardines were basically anchovies only bigger, having never had either growing up. These sandwiches were like delicious, filling, grown-up tuna salad! I used arugula instead of parsley but otherwise stayed true. Sardines are now a pantry staple for us. :)

Help me try and help my 18 year old son and G2

I have a friend who has a medical need for electrolytes and we've turned up some interesting possibilities. If convenience is the biggest issue, Smart Water is a good sugarless alternative. There are also a ton of packets available that you mix with water - the most easily available is Emergen-C, which has the benefit of a fruity taste and comes in a few flavors. It is "electrolyte balanced" although I'm not sure how it compares with the ingrediants in your average Gatorade.

Cooking from the Glossies: Chocolate Cream Cheese Cupcakes
