Snapshots from Asia: Sapodillas, The Potatoes That Grow on Trees

I always thought they were a fruit and that's how we ate them. My mom used to make a shake out of the pulp, with some milk, sugar, and ice. Delicious! You can get them canned in most latin and indian grocery stores.

Re: "potato-eater" - for Italians, it's "cake-eater," possibly in reference to soft sliced bread, which a lot of immigrants apparently mistook for cake.

vimisha: they are a fruit -- just with a curious name ;) i've seen the frozen pulp carried by Goya, but nothing beats fresh! your mom's shake sounds yummy -- we do the same thing with avocados!

I believe that these are also referred to as 'mud apples'. By way of explanation, if at just the right stage of ripeness, they are delicately-flavored, almost honeyed. If overripe - like mud. Wish I could get my hands on some fresh-off-the tree right now!
