I always thought they were a fruit and that's how we ate them. My mom used to make a shake out of the pulp, with some milk, sugar, and ice. Delicious! You can get them canned in most latin and indian grocery stores.

In Jamaica tey are called nesberries (or is it nasberries) anyhoo..... I love the carmelly flavour.

Re: "potato-eater" - for Italians, it's "cake-eater," possibly in reference to soft sliced bread, which a lot of immigrants apparently mistook for cake.

vimisha: they are a fruit -- just with a curious name ;) i've seen the frozen pulp carried by Goya, but nothing beats fresh! your mom's shake sounds yummy -- we do the same thing with avocados!

We had it in our backyard growing up (in the Philippines), we called it chicos! I didnt know many people don't recognize it :) its delicious!

I believe that these are also referred to as 'mud apples'. By way of explanation, if at just the right stage of ripeness, they are delicately-flavored, almost honeyed. If overripe - like mud. Wish I could get my hands on some fresh-off-the tree right now!
