Rocco DiSpirito: Misunderstood Chef of the People or Megalomaniacal Celebrity?

This post is hysterical because of its timing. I just had a conversation with a colleague of mine about how much I despise Rocco. I saw him on Top Chef this season and thought to myself, "And this is what he is doing instead of cooking? Shame on him." He is one of those chefs that rubs me the wrong way and will continue to do so until he shapes up and gets back in the kitchen.

Old Tom Gin, Part of the Vintage Gin Rebirth

@petitesoeur
It's interesting what you commented because I think the complete opposite. Hendrick's makes an unbelievable G&T (with a cucumber slice, of course) and Plymouth is perfect for martini's. I will have to try the switcheroo to see how they come out.
I need to get on top of the Genever wagan...

Photo of the Day: Chicken Feet

Chicken feet are the best dim sum dish. It is what I look forward to everytime I make a trip into Chinatown NY. Best chicken feet can be found at Hop Shing or New Chatham Restaurant on 9 Chatham Square. I have been going there since I was 8 (I'm 24 now) and am still going there with my family. They also serve other amazing dim sum that I will not list in this post as it would be too long.
My recommendation to those who have not tried, give it a shot. The worst that could happen is that you don't like it and you are out $1.50-$2.00.

Hendrick's Gin: An Old Standby in the New Generation of Gins

I was introduced to Hendrick's by a friend and fell in love with it immediately. It is very simple to open up Hendrick's: get a highball, throw some ice into it, pour in some Hendrick's, splash of tonic, drop a slice of cucumber, sip and enjoy!

Chocolate covered bacon initially turned me off but after dissecting it to be a combo of sweet and salty, I would say this could work and might actually be delicious. I would love to try it sometime.

Sunday brunch/lunch places in Philadelpha

Sabrina's Cafe has thee best brunch I have had during my 18 month stint in Philly. The original is on 910 Christian St but I always went to the one closer to me at 1802 Callowhill St. My fav is the cream cheese stuff french toast with fresh fruit on top. Advice: call them and put your name down because the wait can be upwards of two hours, especially at the original Sabrina's ((215) 574-1599‎ for Christina St and (215) 636-9061‎ for Callowhill St).
Honey's Sit and Eat 800 N 4th St ((215) 925-1150‎) is another great place to eat. Again, very popular so you will want to call and get your name down but very very good brunch.
A little easier to get into is Continental Midtown at 1801 Chestnut St (215) 567-1800‎. Great mimosas, decent bloody mary's, and very good veggie burger (I realize veggie burgers are not a big brunch meal but its quite good there).

Snapshots from Asia: Tropical Fruit Feast: Dried Dragon Eyes Kick Raisin Ass

I just had some fresh longan over the weekend and was greatly disappointed that they were not as sweet as I would have liked. Granted, I didn't purchase them so I guess beggers can't be choosers. Looking forward to a few weeks in the future to buy some and I'm sure they will be as sweet a honey.

If that is all it takes to get my mother to making dumplings, I need to get the bootleg stat. I can't wait for it to come out on DVD, that is just way to long of a time to go without homemade dumplings.

Where To Find Fried Pickles on the East Coast

I love that this post come out because I was just ranting to some coworkers about how frickles are amazing. It has been forward to about everyone in my office.

@phaelon56: I have had the frickles and Quaker Steak near Penn State University and they are very good, much better than any Hooters for that matter.

This Weekend in 'New York Times' Food News

I was at Zabar's on Sunday to get some things to eat at Central Park. The list included a baguette, smoked salmon spread, brie, a mix of olives and pickles, and fresh grapefruit juice. Everything was amazing and reasonably priced (I would have spent double had I gone to a brunch). If you are ever in the Upper West Side, you must make a stop at Zabar's!

Where To Find Fried Pickles on the East Coast

I love fried pickles but I thought your comment about spears was really weird because I find the exact opposite to be true. The chips tend to get soggy and cold much faster than the spears. Which made sense to me because the spears are crunchier in the first place. I actually avoid places that have chips. Hooters for example has the chips. Which almost everywhere has a hooters so there you go but I don't go because I want the real thing. The full on spear and if you're lucky and you're at Little River BBQ in Townsend, TN then you get the special sauce too (some sort of sweet mustard). It's absolutely the best. Chips really?!!? So confusing....
