Cook the Book: 'The Pioneer Woman Cooks'
Serious Eats is my favorite. Any of my other favorites, including Pioneer Woman, I read about here at SE.
Worms in fish!
I had come to the same conclusion after watching "Monsters Inside Me" on Animal planet about parasites. No more raw fish for now. I'll miss it.
lots of leftover 2% milk - recipe ideas?
pudding and rice pudding would be good and easy. You can also freeze milk if you are not able to use it up.

Prepare ahead and freeze!
I am always on the look out for dishes that freeze well. I have had good luck with chicken tetrazzini, chicken and rice, stuffed bell peppers and several different soups - chicken and rice, gumbo, beef vegetable, and minestrone.

How do you dress up your rice?
I came up with this when trying to guess what when into Spanish rice. I didn't quite get it but came up with something good. I cooked a chopped clove of garlic and 1/2 sweet onion chopped in olive oil in sauce pan until translucent. Then add 1 cup long grain rice and cook until coated. Add a can of mild tomatoes with green chilies. Add enough chicked broth to make 2 cups liquid and simmer 20 minutes. This is very good and easy.
Worst Food You Ate at a Party
Deer ribs served at a Barbeque-Baby Shower given in my honor. These ribs were enormous and served whole. It looked like a meal that Fred Flinstone would be served. I don't even eat venison. I nibbled and gnawed at little and was full really soon. Pregnant you know.
Recipe Request: Panini and Me
sourdough bread, pesto, dijon, turkey, sliced tomato, provolone
Recipe Request: What to Do with Corn Bread?
Corn bread salad is good. Crumble and mix with diced tomato, green pepper, green onion, crumbled bacon and mayo. You can add corn and pinto beads and cheese. This dish always shows up at the family reunion pot luck.
I love cornbread and sweetmilk. It is also called Crumblin or Crumble-In. My parent, raised on Texas ranches, taught me to eat it. Then there are different preps. Some crumble into a glass of milk then some prefer to pour the milk over the crumbled cornbread. I love foodlore.
Metal Peppers?
There are many things that can cause a metallic taste without something being wrong with your food prep. If you are the only one with this complaint, then look at yourself for the cause. Several things: medication of several classes, high protein diets, ketogenic diets, and dental, sinus, nasal issues. I agree with dbcurrie-have other taste testers.
Green Bell Peppers: Way or No Way?
Way, Way, what about fajitas and gumbo and stuffed peppers? Yes way. Freeze those sucker so you will never be without them.
Baking with Splenda
I have had pretty good luck baking banana bread with Splenda. Some bread and cakes have a different texture or don't rise the same as with sugar. I think a clue into how diabetic friendly a dessert made with Spleda is the serving size. They can be tiny. I just looked at a brownie recipe from the Spenda site which is made in a 9" x 13" pan and it makes 48 servings! Who wants a tiny brownie? A nice fresh fruit salad with Slenda would be more satisfying.
whats on your menu for the weekend?
I had to get the grill out today. 80 degrees in west Texas. Grillled chicken-tastes like summer. Cantaloupe completed the spring/summer like menu. Highs are in the 50's for the weekend so I guess we will have to go back to winter stews and soups. Maybe a gumbo. I think I would like to be in the snow? If I can stay at home and cook!
Depression Food
Get your sleep you need after work and make plans to go out for a meal before time to go back to work. I would feel better if I eat healthy during a slump. Fresh fruit and veg can be a real pick me up. I bought a cantalope today in January. It was delicious and a promise that spring and summer will return again. I have worked night for many years during my nursing career and I know it can drain you that leads to depression. Eat well, spend time with friends and family. Fit them in before work for hopefully for a good meal.Do something besides work and sleep. Look for that day shift job. In the mean time you will feel better if you eat healthy. Good Luck.
Grapefruit: Way or No Way?
Love it. I liked to cut between the sections, sprinkle with sugar, and dig out with a grapefruit spoon. No more. I too belong to the Lipitor club. It is not the only med that interacts with grapefruit. Many do. Check your rx before you partake.
Slow Cookers -- Hot or Not?
I have a slow cooker curse. Everything that I have cooked in it is terrible. I know other cooks enjoy theirs but I don't. I swore never to use mine again but I may try that oatmeal. Tossing out oatmeal won't be as sad as the brisket I had to give to the dogs. In spite of my bad luck, keep it. You may turn out to be a crockpot diva.
Thyroid & Food
I agree that you must get with your health professional to advise you on specific food groups to avoid or not. I'm sure you know that you can have a temporary need for soft food after your surgery. When I have been in this position, I loved my scrambled eggs. Good luck.
Quick - Whadya Have For Lunch Today?
A panini sandwich with pesto, roast chicken, tomato, and provolone and a clementine. Now, sure would like some chocolate.
Butternut Squash Soup recipe w/out cream
I cook butternut squash, yucon gold potato, carrot, and celery all diced about the same size and cooked in low sodium chicken broth and nutmeg until tender and blend with an immersion blender. It is really good creamy soup. You could add low fat evaporated milk or top with yogurt but it is good without it.
How to get rid of lobster...
Glad you got a laugh. It was a Lucy and Ethyl moment. I guess the take home message is first to have a hidden key and second if your pan is ruined, perhaps you can find another use for it!
How do you glorify your leftovers?
I got hooked on bubble and squeak after reading on this site.
When I was a working mom I made spaghetti sauce served over pasta with salad the first day. Then the next day with some chili powder and cumin and the sauce became chili for frito pie.
Well known trick to grill a few extra chicken breast. I use in quesadilla or chicken tortilla soup.
How to get rid of lobster...
I grilled Salmon on a cast iron grill pan. It was delicious. The house and the pan reeked. Every cleaning agent failed and it was left to sun in the back yard long term. Then a few weeks later after a few glasses of nice wine, my BFF and I locked ourselves out of my house in our pj's, no shoes, no cell phone, on my daughters wedding night. Those grill pans are great if you need to break a window. It was a better idea than knocking on my daughters door. I go out for fish now, but I keep the pan in the garage for emergency breaking and entering.
Help with my new pressure cooker and recipes
My late MIL was not a good cook and did not enjoy cooking but she made a killer pressure cooker pot roast and gravy. Tender and melt in your mouth. I would make the side dishes and all was well. I have a pressure cooker in the garage never used. I'm afraid. I feel inspired to get it out and try is out. Now I have a resolution! I will use my pressure cooker in 2009!
Still eating Stilton
I had good result freezing a lemon Stilton for a few months. I never cooked with it. Love it on a cheese tray.
taking the edge off......
I live with diabetics so I keep myself a stash of Hershey Kisses. Cherry Cordial flavor this bag. If I have a craving, 1 or 2 will satisfy. Minty sugarless gum will distract me if I have it bad.
Chef Paul Prudhomme. What do you know about him?
He deserves a second look if you are not too familiar with him. Interesting bio. I went to K-Pauls in the early 80's. Stood in a long line for hours and had a great time and the spiciest food of my life. No reservations and no credicards. I hate to ask but, did he invent the turducken?
Prepare ahead and freeze!
Chili colorado or verde, beef and beet borscht, chicken enchiladas, pizza dough, gumbo, stew, ragu for countless pasta dishes, roasted poblanos to add zip to any future dish, sauteed wild 'shrooms when they're in season, and small packages of roasted poultry for future crepes, soups, omelettes, etc.
Prepare ahead and freeze!
Enchiladas -- I always make two batches and freeze one.
Prepare ahead and freeze!
Boeuf bourgignon (spelling?) works great for me, even with the mushrooms. Soups too - I've had luck with squash-based soups (butternut and parsnip is good) and mushroom soup.
