What do you eat for all-nighters?

I'm a medical student and during late night work & painfully early mornings my boyfriend feeds me vegelettes -- 1-2 eggs packed with finely cut veggies of all kinds + minced garlic &/or finely chopped onion. They're quick to make, so much more flavorful than anything I make, and the variety is endless.

Top with fresh goat cheese and a slice of sprouted grain toast or half of a well-toasted whole wheat english muffin. Keeps me going strong in a way that caffeine can't. Complex carb plus some protein and bulky vegetables make for a satisfying & energizing meal (no post-prandial coma!). Oh, and I second the plenty of water advice, too!

Good luck on the med school apps!

Black and White Granola

I bought some sesame seeds from an Indian grocery, but they smelled rancid. Any ideas where can I find fresh ones? Whole Foods doesn't carry them in my neck of the woods. Thanks if you can direct me to a source (online or otherwise) for fresher sesame seeds!

Cook the Book: Easy Gluten-Free Baking

A phyllo dough napoleon with a nice eggy vanilla custard and topped with melted chocolate. I've had it just twice and have been unable to find similar concoctions that didn't rely on way-too-sweet butter creme or other cake frosting-like mixture.

Dear Whole Foods,

Wegman's is a pretty store that carries a lot of the same stuff a regular grocery store carries at higher prices. The prepared foods section is filled with tasty food.

However, Wegman's may be even more expensive than WFM in my area. At the very least prices are comparable. In fact, out here on the East Coast, TJ's & WFM offer simlar (or same) price for many of my favorite packaged items. Wegman's carries amazingly little organic produce, so I end up more at TJ's & WFM even though I drive by Wegman's daily.

My boyfriend is a WFM employee who gets a discount (and yes, we met at WFM, so I'm indebted), so once in a while we splurge on something overpriced. But normally we stick to basics at and I wishwishwish (and have asked in writing, with no response) they would expand their bulk section to be more like the one in Berkeley, CA (bulk teas, spices!). I guess East Coast suburbia residents don't like the idea of buying bulk. Who knew?

Serious Heat: 30 Things To Do With Leftover Salsa

Toast whole grain bread. Add layer of mashed ripened avocado. Add layer of black beans or chickpeas. Top with salsa & salt to taste. This is best with an acidic salsa like Trader Joe's Salsa Autentica. One is a snack; two with extra beans is a quick & delicious meal. Deceptively simple but has impressed everyone for whom I've made it over the past 10 years, which includes a broad range of tastes!

Dinner Tonight: Curried Red Lentils with Coconut Milk

Really delicious! We loved this with either plain yogurt or cottage cheese and a side of cooked greens (broccoli rabe, but any would work) we needed to use.

I added black mustard seed & ginger, a can of diced tomatoes, & topped with cilantro (since I had all of these on hand). After transferring the onion/chili/spice mixture to the soup pot I sauteed the tomatoes in the empty pan to coat them with the spices caked onto the pan surface.

Cook the Book: Hybrid Quick Bread

Debstah, don't give up on a food processor just yet! I have what I believe is the tiniest kitchen ever. Smaller than the tiny kitchen Mark Bittman wrote about in a recent Minimalist column with barely enough room for two thin people to stand in it.

Counter space permits a food processor, toaster oven, utensils jar & small bamboo cutting board. One person has room to chop veggies & prep food. The 2nd person can use the apartment-sized stove or maybe wash dishes if we're careful not to elbow each other.

We cook many complex & wonderful meals in our tiny space. If your kitchen is truly too small for a food processor, maybe you could store one in a closet or basement.

Cook the Book: 'Food Matters: A Guide to Conscious Eating'

Mr. Bittman showed me that I can revel in cooking amazing food in my thimble-sized kitchen with apartment-sized oven & refrigerator. He also cured me of my processed food love -- no more canned stock & beans & many more fresh whole foods. My boyfriend & I both thank him heartily for both of these grand gifts!

We bought a flat (20) last week from a local organic market and had the same thing happen. All 20 eggs were double yolked. It was the weirdest thing.

What do you eat for all-nighters?

Depends on the season for me. In the winter I eat a bunch of clementines 'cause they're easy to peel and it's a fruit, yayy so I won't feel as guilty if I had munched on chips. And during the summer....a nice bowl of cereal with cold milk so that I know I'll be fortified for the next day x]

Also- a toasted English muffin with sliced banana, a little peanut butter, and honey is amazing at about 2 am when you get bleary eyed and all the words you've been reading start blurring together :)

If I'm okay for the calories, I'll eat 1-2 tbs natural peanut butter with a sliced apple, or some "hint of salt" wheat thins with sliced apple and slices of sharp cheddar cheese. I find that having a little protein, a little bit of carbs, and something sweet and salty cuts all my cravings- gives me an extra boost of energy- and keeps me from digging for change for the vending machine. I have enough added pounds from being a student for so many years- I don't need extra potato chips or M&Ms to add any more!

in conclusion, Serious Eaters are maniacs for peanut butter.

Toast two poptarts, preferably a fruit flavor, and spread them with peanut butter. make sure you have lots of milk or you could clog your esophagus.

So far from what I've tried I find that drinking tons of water works wonders. But the true magic combo for me is Coke and Peanut M&Ms. I don't know what it is about those M&Ms but they seriously help to keep me going. I've also tried sipping coke out of a Red Vines straw; worked well. However, if I don't feel like having anything junky like candy, then I do a mix of cold mangoes and frozen grapes or a pasta salad with feta. Oh! Orange juice is good too. Mentally I associate OJ with breakfast so when I drink it at 4 a.m it kinds tricks me into thinking it's breakfast time. I think that it's best to shy away from warm, comforting foods. Go for crunchy and cold foods.

I definitely agree with the teeth brushing, it's how I wake myself up. That and middle of the night showers, wakes you up and gives you a quick mental break. Foodwise cereal was my goto middle of the night food. Crunchy to keep you up and mentally associated with morning, plus there's so many different kinds that you can experiment with that works best for you. Sugary or fibery or filled with dried fruit or whatever.

Smartfood white cheddar popcorn. But watch the cheese-coated fingerprints.

depends on what I crave (sweet or savory) and what I have on hand. Sometimes it'll be toasted english muffin with some nut butter (maybe a drizzle of honey), or maybe a mini-bag of popcorn, pita with hummus, a fruit chilling in the fridge or maybe a small piece of good dark chocolate.

@ volkstricken - Do you have any health food stores near you? If so, try there in the bulk section or in the baking section. If not, just go ahead and use the sweetened coconut. For some reason it tends to be stickier than unsweetened shredded coconut. I'd reduce the amount of sweetener you use, but if you like things sweet it might just be perfect!

@ verak - If you want Gomasio (the sesame seeds and salt) your local Whole Foods should carry it. Check the Asian foods section where you might find seaweed, pickled ginger, sushi making stuff etc. I buy Eden Organics Black and Tan Gomasio.
