Taste Test: Frozen Apple Pies

We love Marie Callender's pies as well as the ones from Sam's club/Walmart. Surprisingly large and hearty is the pie they have and I'm not sure if it's Sam's or Great Value, since our Walmart only had it for a short time. It was great!

Jewel has a new line of ice cream that is the best...It's mountain ridge or something Very good bean flavor and creamy as all get out!

Home Run Inn Pizzas and Palermo's pizzas are our favorites - HRI for a thicker crust, Palermo's for the really thin cracker-type crust.

This will sound funny but for cutting blocks of cheddar, swiss, colby I use my cleaver. It works great! For harder cheeses like parma and romano, we just use a steak knife or even a butter knife, coz we drop it in the grater and grate away...

In Season: Strawberries

Occasionally we'll have them start to turn (usually when we go strawberry picking and fall behind on our freezing). When they are a little too soft I'll put those in a blender with some confectioners sugar and make a really nice strawberry sauce that's great on ice cream or added to lemonade!

Lou Malnati's: Home of Flawless Deep Dish

Timothyrows: I don't know what you know about Chicago pizza, but as I was born and raised on Chicago pizza, I've never heard of Pequod's or Piece. Might as well be Cumquat's. Chicago's pizza? You must be from New York or outerspace. Lou's is the best. Even Bobby Flay couldn't make a better pizza when he challenged them to a throwdown!

Lou's is awesome and if you pick up a frozen one in any of their storefronts they are great at home...so I imagine the ones you get shipped are pretty good too. And their jingle is pretty catchy...1 800 loutogo...

Taste Test: Frozen Apple Pies

Speaking of apple pies, I made one this Sunday for dessert. It was really good. Of all the frozen pies I've tried, Marie Callender's are the best. I love the apple crumb pie. In a pinch, I served it for dessert one night with some vanilla ice cream and my guests thought I had baked it. I had to confess it was frozen, but they all loved it. Marie's frozen pot pies (chicken with broccoli & mushroom sauce - my personal favorite) and dinners are also very good. I agree with wunami that they attempt to make their frozen products as close to their original recipes as possible.

Taste Test: Frozen Apple Pies

Delicious Orchards pies have always been very good, but not exactly convienient to NYC. One of the best pies in NYC is without a doubt the ones from The Little Pie Company of NYC. They've gone up in price quite a bit in the last two years, and their satelite store in Grand Central is no more, but that shouldn't dissuade you from braving mid-town. (Their sour cherry is to die for!)

There are some other excellent pies as well, such as the one's from Two Little Red Hens on the UES in the 80's, and the Lexington Candy Shop nearby also has a very good ones, but their's has to be ordered ahead of time as they come from a bakery in Southampton. Of course one can always go to Payard for a Tarte Tatain...$$$

What’s Your Favorite Weird Snack Combo?

I used to go to the LA Reader office on Friday mornings to collect my mail, then I'd stop in the chain drugstore nearby to pick up a piece of beef jerky, and a package of vanilla creme sandwich cookies, which I'd eat while driving to my day job. Not together, just back-to-back. Can't remember if I ate the jerky or the cookies first, nor why I thought those would make a good breakfast.

Who Makes the Best Vanilla Ice Cream?

Silver Moon's Bourbon Vanilla Bean is far superior to any of the vanillas mentioned in the comparison. It is a premium ice cream, and the tiny vanilla bean specks along with the creamy consistency make it my top vote. Silver Moon is a new ice cream from California with all natural ingredients.

The sad thing is Breyers used to be a quality product, using minimal, natural ingredients. Have you looked at the label recently? I think Unilever bought them and the product went DOWN HILL. It used to be good. I have to agree, the Dazs is the top dog. when it comes to ingredients, KISS: keep it simple stupid

Brigham's vanilla ice cream is the Platonic idea of vanilla. It makes all other vanilla ice creams melt in shame. Sadly, Brigham's is a New England thing, and I'm going crazy without it here in Maryland!

Who Makes the Best Vanilla Ice Cream?

I grew up on Blue Bell, and in DC you can get it every Father's Day at the Texas State Society Father's Day picnic. However, I actually prefer (I know, it's a sin) all natural products like Breyers. I don't like things so sweet anymore, and prefer airy or smooth textures.

However, the best vanilla ice cream I've ever had was the house-made stuff at Jaxson's in Dania Beach, FL. Holy crap that was excellent. Made me want to order vanilla every time, when I rarely do.

Serious Cheese: All About Cheese Knives

I personally think that a good serrated knife, particularly a tomato knife like this one featured on amazon http://tinyurl.com/mgteoy work great for hard cheeses.

I like to use the one-handed test - if you can't cut and dispense the cheese onto your handy cracker, you don't have the correct tool.

I have to admit, Haagen-Dasz has ALWAYS had that "smooth Vanilla silky taste". Cool and inviting, and I've never been disappointed. But a ZILLION CALORIES TOO ! Still..........when you want to treat yourself ..........nothing quite like it.

From Serious Eats

Who Makes the Best Vanilla Ice Cream?

I'm also a loyal Blue Bell fan, and it's one of the things I miss the most about Texas. I usually dislike vanilla because I think it's too "plain" when there's so many interesting ice cream pairings out there. However, with Blue Bell I don't need anything else. There's a reason why they're the third-best-selling ice cream in the U.S. even though they only cater to less than half of the states!

From Serious Eats

Who Makes the Best Vanilla Ice Cream?

I like Breyer's French vanilla. It's a little creamier than the natural vanilla. I love that they don't put corn syrup in it.

Once I tasted LaSalle, I never went back to Haagan Daz again. Also great is Sedutto (but I think it's just available in cones in the New York area).

I am another Silver Moon fan! I agree with the above comments about the Silver Moon Bourbon Vanilla. When you take the first bite, close your eyes, savor and let the Bourbon Vanilla enliven your tastebuds .... oh my, on my... such pleasure! The richness and intenseness but gentle flavor is just the most lovely experience you could ever ask for in a vanilla ice cream! Too bad this ice cream was not one of the 5 listed. Hands down it would be the winner! It is a San Francisco/Silcon Valley company and I purchased mine from Gene's Market in Saratoga, CA. You can go to the website to find other locations: www.silvermoondesserts.com Yum, Yum!

Who Makes the Best Vanilla Ice Cream?

I must say that after having tasted at least 20 different varieties of Vanilla ice cream, there is NOTHING that comes close to Silver Moon's Bourbon Vanilla Bean. The entire line of flavors by Siver Moon are unique and exceptional but the vanilla is a perfect example of how a standard flavor can be taken to the next level. The Bourbon Vanilla Bean has layers of flavor that compliment each other and knock your socks off. I never thought I would write such a compelling statement about vanilla but you have to try it.

Who Makes the Best Vanilla Ice Cream?

A good question, but the best player wasn't listed in their survey. By far the best vanilla ice cream I ever tasted is Bourbon Vanilla Bean from Silver Moon Desserts in San Francisco. Most of the ice creams listed pale in comparison.

Wow, so many Blue Bell fans. I'm living in Texas and never realized they had such a cult following.

From Serious Eats

Who Makes the Best Vanilla Ice Cream?

I have to say that Blue Bell is the best. I live in the little town of Brenham and have worked at the little creamery during the summer. I can say for a fact that it is made with loving care, and when you work there you do get to eat all you can and sell the rest.

From Serious Eats

Who Makes the Best Vanilla Ice Cream?

There is no doubt about it - Blue Bell Ice Cream from the little creamery in Texas - made by "happy cows" is THE VERY BEST ICE CREAM in the country!

From Serious Eats

Who Makes the Best Vanilla Ice Cream?

I don't know if it's a regional thing, but Blue Bell Homemade Vanilla is the closest I've tasted to the homemade icecream I remember as a kid. Not all natural but it's the gallon I pick ever time.

Favorite frozen entrees?

Without a doubt................Marie Callendar's chicken pot pie..........& you get TWO crusts, YESSSSSSSSSSSS!
After it's baked, you have to flip it over on your plate & chop it all up so that you get the correct ratio of filling/crust per each bite!

From Serious Eats

Who Makes the Best Vanilla Ice Cream?

For those looking for Blue Bunny...........here in upstate New York, Walmart sells it. Perry's is our hometown brand........nothing compares except for homemade.
I'm surprised Breyer's made low on the list as well.

From Talk

Favorite frozen entrees?

Bertolli's Dinner for Two: Cook 3/4 - 1 lb pasta, toss in a bag of high quality frozen veg (Safeway Select Tuscan Blend is good) before draining; toss into pan with a mostly cooked Bertolli's. Finish cooking, add a crusty bread, and "Dinner for Two" now generously feeds 4 or 5. The frozen sauce is pretty abundant (enough to flavor all the additions; but if you like your pasta swimming in sauce, I'm sure you could find a matching or similar bottled Bertolli sauce to add). All the sauces I've tasted have been very well flavored.
btw, in my experience, the chicken is dry & tough, so I only go for the shrimp, sausage or vegetable versions, which have been excellent.

I saw a knife like the one pictured in a Marshall's store, but I resisted the temptation to buy it.
