Grocery Ninja: Sour Plums

I used to lick all the powdered sugar off them as a kid! Then put them back in the packets without telling my mum :D

And the last time my grandma saw me eating them, she eyed me and my belly carefully and asked, "Is there something you want to tell me?"

Crunchy foods...what are your favorites?

Crunchy rice at the bottom of the pot!

Did that yesterday. Lined a casserole pot with lightly-buttered rice on the base and sides, filled it with layers of raw marinated chicken and vegetables, sealed with another layer of rice, then put the lid on and baked on 420 degrees for 15 min, then 350 degrees for 30 to 45 min.

And read some Harold McGee while waiting.

What is your favorite spice, and in what dishes do you use it?

Star anise. And usually in a Peranakan dark soy chicken dish, with kecap manis, ginger slices, garlic cloves, cinnamon, cloves and black peppercorns

Grocery Ninja: Mooncakes and the Mid-Autumn Festival

My family's a big fan of the white or 'snow-skin' crusts, or the pandan-scented green skins. And these hideously indulgent ones with sugared crytallised pork fat!

I always look forward to your entries, Ling. Thanks for evoking nostalgia yet again!

Kitchen hacks?

Instead of buying a salad spinner, I roll up wet salad leaves in a large kitchen towel, hold the 2 ends together and spin it around over my head in the back garden. Gets all the water out, works a treat. Centrifugal force and what not. Although I've come close to twisting my shoulder from over-enthusiasm :) cue taken from jamie Oliver!

What's the weirdest thing you've ever put on the grill?

When i was a kid, my barbie dolls, just to see what would happen...

Seriously, bananas still in the skin, split lengthways down the middle to slip some chocolate in, wrap it all up in foil and onto the grill. Delicious!

What do you think of the new site?

I've started to use Serious Eats as an example of good blog and blog writing for training new bloggers at work :) Grats on the usability.

What to do/where to eat advice for Singapore?

I suggest the Chomp Chomp hawker centre in my hometown Serangoon Gardens. People travel from across Malaysia to eat there!

Fabulous BBQ stingray, Hokkien noodles, prawn noodle soup, Chye Tow Kuay, rojak, everything.

And check out this website http://www.makansutra.com/

Maybe you could but them the guides as a gift?

Question of the Day: I love the smell of...

Freshly-plucked coriander leaves simmering in a light chicken broth.

From Talk

What to serve with quail?

Radicchio and something tart (pickled fruit.veg?) and parmesan polenta.

Interesting food combinations

My ex sister in law had chilli sauce on EVERYTHING. Even sponge cake.

In Hong Kong, Finish What You've Ordered or Pay A Fine

I know 2 places in Singapore that did it in the 80s (all you can eat joints). This was for steamboat/hot plate buffets where you grab the uncooked food at a buffet and cook it yourself at your table. It was shocking, how much people took and never touched.

From Talk

Question of the Day: What's the farthest distance you've ever traveled for food?

about 1.5 hours across melbourne, australia for what was reputed to be the best fish and chips in the state. Was well worth it!

Question of the Day: Frozen vegetables -- as good as fresh?

Saw this on a TV program in Australia - tests were done on the nutritional content of frozen versus 'fresh'. Frozen won out by far for broccoli. The theory is that the 'fresh' food bought at the supermarket has been sitting there for a while, as opposed to veg which has been frozen, supposedly as soon as it's been harvested.

Apart from that, frozen veg is usually too soggy for my liking.

Is there a food you love that you won't buy?

Peanut butter, nutella, butter, margarine, doritos, any chips, chocolate, cheese, white bread, instant noodles, nibbly nuts, milo, hot chocolate, cookies, refined sugar, refined flour, cream, ice cream...

Sounds like a pretty boring household, eh? :P sighs.

On occasion, I"ll bake for someone and buy a block of butter. Mr Turkiyaki is onto the remnant butter bits like he's been starved for weeks.

Question of the Day: Cooking anything for Saint Patrick's Day?

Everthing sounds so good!

We put beer in the shepherds pie and made a potato salad, tinted green by a dressing of mashed arugula and whole-egg mayo. And drank heaps of beer.

From Talk

What's your favorite pasta dish (homemade division)?

Sliced garlic and chopped chilli, sauteed in olive oil, with linguine tossed in at the end. Garnished with chiffonade parsley.

Or a good simple creamless carbonara, ridiculous amounts garlic included!

From Talk

Question of the Day: Brown-bag lunch—what's in yours?

Yesterday, it was arugula with slices of poached swordfish and chunks of fetta, dressed with balsamic, olive oil, brown sugar, salt and pepper.

Today I've got a bran banana muffin, 2 bananas, 4 carrots and a toasted multigrain cheese sandwich :P

From Talk

Question of the Day: Got any good food jokes?

If Adam and Eve were Chinese... they would've eaten the snake.

/me is Chinese-Singaporean, first heard this from my dad.

From Talk

Is your kitchen clean right now?

I clean, but housemates always find SOMETHING to dump into the sink! The house we're renting is up for sale, so the real estate agent hired a cleaner sort us out. It's liked we've never lived in that house before, lol!
