did anyone dine out at a restaurant for thanksgiving? if so, where did you go, why did you choose the place, and most importantly, what did you order?

What lunch box did you have - what was in it?

some red camping one that was soft and insulated. i was envious of others' brown bags or cute tin ones. i also was one of the outcast kids, but now i realize now how lucky i was. my mother would put together the craziest lunches, always organic, of course. cheese and spinach tortellini with olive oil, cracked pepper, and parmesan cheese was my favorite, but the tupperware always leaked and my lunchbox and i smelled like delicious oil and herbs all day. she would also throw in wildcard items like giant dill pickles, banana chips, or slices of tillamook cheddar cheese. if we were good we'd get 'sundrops' for dessert: basically carob m&m's.

Sex and The City...

i cannot believe i am saying this, but to be really authentic you could eat magnolia cupcakes with your cosmos. i am not a fan of their baking, but it would be in very much in the theme of sex in the city. if i were you i would just get some cupcakes from your favorite bakery. if you want something savory and your friends have a sense of humor you could buy some penis-shaped pasta (they sell it at sex shops) and cook that up. have fun! i am in madrid so i have to wait until the end of june to see it.

Birthday Cake

i just spent my 21st birthday in paris: birthday treats galore. cake is a must every year but never chocolate because i eat it almost every day.

on the actual day i had ananas flambé (flaming pineapple served with vanilla ice cream). the next day i went to Mariage Frères for high tea and had the most beautiful fluffy lemon vanilla genoise tea cake with dried tea leaves and rose buds on top.

Movie Theater Food

i don't really sneak the foodstuffs...i have no shame. i usually bring in a bar of dark chocolate, but have also brought bottles of wine and truffles, too. there is one theater in my home town that allows you to bring in ice cream from the neighborhood parlor.

Surprise romantic picnic - ideas needed!

yes and yes on the strawberries dipped in chocolate (as long as the chocolate won't melt because that would be ugly and unromantic) and the bubbly. grapes are a must as well as figs, in my opinion. not really the season for the latter, so i would maybe do dried figs or dates with goat cheese and a fresh baguette. the other option if they are not keen on these would be apple and a hard cheese which would be more difficult to feed to each other but is definitely classic/romantic picnic fare. remember to pack a blanket or something to sit on so they are comfortable. uncomfortable picnic seating is the worst. good luck! i am jealous--i would love this project.

I love brunch! Do you brunch out or in?

brunch is beautiful! if i am in manhattan my favorite spot is alice´s tea cup for a poached egg, banana bread with fresh peanut butter and preserves, and a bowl of berries. i usually order the lady grey because if you ask for coffee they serve it in a giant mug that says ´loser´. little owl is also fantastic, and is usually where i go if i have friends in town for the weekend.

san francisco, boulette´s larder, hands down.
santa fe,at pasqual´s for the best brunch in the world.
and if brunching at home, it has to be my mama´s honey whole-wheat pancakes with fried eggs and warm maple syrup.

i cannot wait for sunday!

New York Bakeries

silver moon at 105 and broadway for fruit and nut granola, ethiopian bread, chocolate chip cookies (more like cakes), and chocolate almond croissants (modest in size).

bouchon in time warner for crazy sticky buns and the bouchons.

city bakery for chocolate chip cookies. that is all i've ever had here because they are so divine.

healthy bakeries? babycakes on broome st. wheat, gluten, dairy, casein, egg, and refined sugar free, and delectable, believe it or not. i love their chocolate cupcake--the vanilla tastes mealy and vegan-y, but the chocolate is decadent!

What's for lunch today?

some of the best indian i've ever had--in madrid of all places! my sister and i had a late lunch at a little spot called taj mahal--we had a big brazilian craving, but it was closed so we ended up here instead. a blessing in disguise. we had extra picante fish curry, basmati rice with cloves, dried papaya and pineapple, cashews, pistachios, raisins, and banana chips, and the most amazing raita. oh and a glass of wine each, of course. when in spain.

Sex and The City...

Um, No? *cringing here* It was crazy and remember, we were drinking cosmos at the movie. I was hung over for 2 days! Remember what Samantha said when she was talking about eating everything insight except, you know, well I sort of, well, you know! But hey, it really wasn't me, it was the cosmos. My face was numb! How bad is that?? :-O

@chiff - Holy Guacamole! We decided when the movie comes out on DVD, we are going to have another party and watch the movie again. Way too much fun. Did the Cosmo thing too. You should have seen the pate a choux! I have one word.......Dante.

What lunch box did you have - what was in it?

My mom sometimes put spaghetti in my thermos. People thought it was weird but I liked that better than the sandwiches... I had Snoopy, Peanuts, maybe G I Joe (when she wasn't paying attention and switched mine with my brother's)... I had Sanrio ones as well before Sanrio was cool... bah.

I still have lunchboxes... only now we call 'em bento and I try to put as little food as possible in to them, lol. http://feistybento.blogspot.com :)

Cold Cereal Confessions

I still love PB Cap'n Crunch. When I was pregnant it was corn flakes with bananas and whole milk. I love the original giant shredded wheat biscuits, too, with cinnamon and sugar. I leave them whole and cut bites off with my spoon so that the top stays crisp.

Blood sugar issues, be damned!

What lunch box did you have - what was in it?

I must have had more than one along the way, but the only lunch box I can remember had the Harlem Globe Trotters on the side. Not with photos of the team though. They had their own Saturday morning cartoon in the 70's instead. I still think it was "supercool" and wish I still had it. What was inside was not so wonderful. PB&J on pepperridge farm white bread. I still like pb&j but not after its sat in a locker for 3 hours and the jelly has sunk into the bread. Baloney wasn't too good but held up better somehow.

I remember coveting a classmate's Josie and the Pussycats lunch box as well.

What lunch box did you have - what was in it?

@Susquehanna: I had the same Mork and Mindy lunchbox, but in orange. This was 1981. In Grade 2 I got a Thermos brand Garfield lunchbox and then in grade 4 the cool thing was to have an insulated bag. The first one I had was red and white but then I got a silver coloured one with "Survival Kit" printed on it.

A typical lunch was saltines w/butter or pb for morning snack; pb and honey sandwich, cut up apple wrapped in wax paper and either homemade baking or two Dare Chocolate fudge cookies. With the hard plastic lunch boxes I usually got apple or grape juice in the thermos but by the time the insulated packs came along, I was buying a carton of milk at school. 40 cents, either white or chocolate. That was the only thing you could buy at school; the milk guy would drop off a couple of cases and someone would set up a table in the foyer every day.

Then in grade 7 we moved and I was only 2 doors down from my new school so I could go home for lunch and eat Zoodles and watch Gummi Bears on TV!

Cold Cereal Confessions

It's ALL about the Golden Grahams. I could eat them every single day. I think I may have to purchase a box this weekend, in fact-- I love eating cereal for dessert!

From Talk

What lunch box did you have - what was in it?

@Susquehanna: Totally hear ya on being judged about lunches. I was (still am) really good about fruit, so anything was game. I used to LOVE prunes. One day, my mom packed them for me as my fruit. Needless to say, that was the last day they were packed. Haven't had them in a while, but I still like them.

@Chelley: I WANT TO GO!! I think I had everything NKOTB at one point. Pins, posters, clothing, purses, puzzles, etc...

What or who is Holly Hobby?

I had metal and plastic. Rainbow Brite, Barbie, a Butterfly one-my fave (shocking, I know), She Ra,and Wonder Woman. It usually contained either a pb&jam, ham/turkey and cheese, tuna with any type of fruit, ssips drink box or homemade iced tea and pretzels or if it was a cookie day (rare)-exactly 3 (but only Oreos or Homemade Choco Chip). I used to hate it when she would make homemade turkey/chicken salad sandwhiches-I just didn't like it. I would always ask her why and she said it was good for me. All I wanted was soda (not allowed in our house) and Lunchables-apparently that was too much to ask for, since I NEVER got either one.

From Talk

What lunch box did you have - what was in it?

@britt and Chelly: I had the NKOTB lunchbox as well! It was orange and tacky as hell. Man, I looked cool with it though! My best friend and I will be seeing NKOTB in KC, MO this November. After nearly 20 years I finally get to see them in concert!
