Gerrit's Satellite Wafers: Cute Packaging, But Tastes Disgusting

Oh, yeah. I remember those. They were pretty gross when I was a kid, too - flavorless styrofoam filled with hard sugar beads that didn't taste like anything.

OMG. That looks unbelievably fantastic. As soon as I have time, this is tops on my to-do list.

Taste Test: Mustard

Well, I guess I fall in that "not to be trusted" category. Not sure what it is, but I've NEVER been able to eat mustard. And it's not just an "ew, no thanks" reaction - even the smell makes me ill. Hubby loves it, though, so we have several options in the fridge. I just ignore them.

I do admit that it was still enjoyable to read the taste test, especially from afar, where I don't run the risk of actually smelling it. :D

Cook the Book: 'Gourmet Today'

My very first cookbook was a kids' one called "Neat Eats". It had these great illustrations (very cartoony) and had recipes for a huge range of things, even baked Alaska. My copy went missing years ago, but I managed to track a used copy down recently, and it's back on my cookbook shelf. It's still a darned cute book!

Video: Cooking Mama 3 Trailer

I am embarrassingly addicted to the Cooking Mama games. So much so that after pretty much finishing both 1 and 2, I just picked up Gardening Mama the other day. Hopefully that will tide me over until this comes out!

Do Gals Eat Less When Guys Are Around?

Pretty sure that no longer applies once one is married, or I wouldn't weigh more now than I did 11 years ago, considering I'm eating dinner with a man pretty much every night. :)

Dance Your Ass Off, Chairman

DEFINITELY looking forward to rooting for him! He's yummy.

And the original Chairman was an actor, too - from what I understand, it's known and accepted in Japan that the whole story behind the creation of Kitchen Stadium is just that - a story. Takeshi Kaga is a known actor. If you've ever seen the 10th Anniversary concert of Les Miserables, when they do the finale with the 17 international Jean Valjeans, he's there as the rep from the Japanese cast.

Tomatoes Are Evil

My people! I'm totally in the "any form but raw" crowd. And the reality is, I'm never going to find the "right tomato" to bring me around, because it's not a flavor issue for me. It's all about texture. Those horrible seeds, and that awful slime that surrounds them will kill even the most perfect ripe flavorful tomato.

And Kev, I'm with you - I have no problem just picking them off a salad (or eating around them), and as long as *I* am not making a big deal about it, I don't see why anyone else feels the need to.

Do You Eat or Email First?

I'm not hungry when I first wake up. Actually, if I try to eat too soon after waking up, it makes me nauseous. So, yeah, I check the computer - email, RSS feeds, a couple of message boards - and once that's done, my stomach has usually joined the world of the living, so it's time to eat.

Would You Go to a Chain Restaurant on a First Date?

Well, my first date with my now-husband was, in fact, at a TGI Friday's, because we lived in the middle of nowhere, and that was pretty much the best option (Seriously, it was that or the food court at the mall. Rural PA for the win!). We've been married for 11 years now, so clearly it wasn't a deal breaker for either of us.

Ed Levine's Serious Diet, Week 68: Coming Up on the Big 5-0

Ed, your column here has been a real inspiration to me. I've tried to lose weight before, but every time it has been so focused on "Don't eat this. Don't eat that." and substituting in bland low-fat and low-cal versions of REAL food that I just couldn't stick with it. This time, I'm trying to eat real food, since that's what I'm going to be exposed to 99% of the time, and just learn to eat smaller portions. I don't feel as deprived, and it's WORKING. Since the beginning of March, I've lost about 15 pounds, and reading your column every week has really helped keep me going. So thank you, and a HUGE congratulations on breaking the 5-0 barrier!

Critic Turned Cook Makes/Doesn't Break Mayo

I can't stand raw tomatoes, so I have no issue asking for them to be left off a sandwich or burger, or something simple like that. But I'd never order something tomato-centric and ask them to hold the tomatoes. Ditto mushrooms (like the flavor, LOATHE the texture) - I'll eat around them. If I can't eat around them, I order something else.

That's interesting carsodial and kingnutter, we called them Flying Saucers too.

From Serious Eats

Gerrit's Satellite Wafers: Cute Packaging, But Tastes Disgusting

I love Flying Saucers, cuz the styrofoam shell helps to counter the fizzy sherbet inside.

Our A-Level English teacher gave out some during our final lesson, and some of the boys decided to open them out, cut the sherbet into lines and snort it. Why, I ask you. WHY?

From Serious Eats

Gerrit's Satellite Wafers: Cute Packaging, But Tastes Disgusting

In the UK these are called Flying Saucers, but they are filled with fizzy sherbet rather than beads.

One of my favourite tricks at school was to open them up, mix in some curry or chilli powder, re-seal them and give them to unsuspecting victims.

Interestingly some people preferred my enhanced recipe...

From Serious Eats

Gerrit's Satellite Wafers: Cute Packaging, But Tastes Disgusting

I had NO idea that they had beads inside!!! I always thought they were like marshmallow-y candies that look like diaphragms

From Serious Eats

Gerrit's Satellite Wafers: Cute Packaging, But Tastes Disgusting

I used to loooove these. But they really don't taste like anything.

From Serious Eats

Gerrit's Satellite Wafers: Cute Packaging, But Tastes Disgusting

Over here in the UK, we call them 'Flying Saucers', but there's no edible beads - just the powder that fizzes when you melt the outer shell in your mouth.

From Serious Eats

Gerrit's Satellite Wafers: Cute Packaging, But Tastes Disgusting

I love these things! Used to get them at the penny candy stores in Pennsylvania. For a while there was a type that strayed from the beads and switched to a sour powder. I was happy when they went back to the beady sprinkles!

From Serious Eats

Gerrit's Satellite Wafers: Cute Packaging, But Tastes Disgusting

i remember those things. they give me shivers with their awfulness.

part of that stems from me being a very sick kid and having to take capsules. since i was so little i couldn't swallow the pills whole, so my mom would break them and put them on apple butter. i haven't ever been able to eat apple butter after that-or candies that resemble those god awful beads. this candy falls heavily into that category-same for those chocolate buttons you can buy at the movie theater with the little white beads stuck on them.

heebie. jeebie.

From Serious Eats

Gerrit's Satellite Wafers: Cute Packaging, But Tastes Disgusting

I see alot of haters associated with this "candy"-ha ha -I think it is the nostalgia associated with eating them. I liked them as a kid & would like to try them again to see what they taste like now. Maybe it is a Northeast thing. I dunno?!

From Serious Eats

Gerrit's Satellite Wafers: Cute Packaging, But Tastes Disgusting

Do you know anything about the history of these things? I've been wanting to write a post on them for my blog forever, but no one seems to know anything about them.

As far as I can tell, they originated in the UK before coming to the USA. But other than that, I know nothing.

Well, except that they're disgusting!

From Serious Eats

Gerrit's Satellite Wafers: Cute Packaging, But Tastes Disgusting

I remember loving those candies when I was little. What I liked about them was that the exterior would melt in your mouth, the trick being not to let them get stuck to the roof of your mouth. Consider it weird if you will, but I still felt a tug of nostalgia when I saw this blog article, because I remembered buying them, all those years ago.

From Serious Eats

Gerrit's Satellite Wafers: Cute Packaging, But Tastes Disgusting

No way! These are awesome!! They taste like nothing w/sugar inside. What's not to like?

From Serious Eats

Gerrit's Satellite Wafers: Cute Packaging, But Tastes Disgusting

I remember them too, and you are all right, they taste awful. My grandpop used to buy them for me from the corner candy store, Ann's, in Baltimore. We called them UFOs.

From Serious Eats

Gerrit's Satellite Wafers: Cute Packaging, But Tastes Disgusting

Yup. I remember these as well. They tasted awful then, but they held an odd fascination for me. They were kind of fun because they rattled, and the texture was so...odd, at least for an alleged food item.

I'm not sure which category it would go in, its probably more of a hot sauce, but I have to turn you all on to Dave's Gourmet Hurtin' Habanero & Honey Mustard: http://www.davesgourmet.peachhost.com/ct_PRdahhm.htm.
Its thick enough to be spreadable for your sandwich, and so hot you cant stand it but so sweet you can't resist - there's nothing better with cold, day-old pot roast.

Sounds great -- we eat peanut butter and apples together. Not sure why I never thought of a pie. I'm picturing a silly Reese's peanut butter cup inspired commercial in my head.
