What is your worst cooking disaster?

favorite disasters:
1. Not realizing that turkeys need to defrost for ages before you can cook them for thanksgiving (it was for an event in college - we don't make them at home). We ended up slicing them thinly and cooking them on sheet pans - my mom still laughs about this, two years later.
2. When I was about 7, not realizing you couldn't put metal in the microwave (Chinese food container with the little metal handle)

On a more serious note, I love to bake, but I can't seem to make anything well with chocolate...like, chocolate cake is always a bust. Blergh.

I Won't Eat It

i second the tomatoes - it's totally a textural thing, though. Even without the gushy seed parts, sometime's i can't deal with the tomato flesh.

Other things: tuna, apples, berries (except strawberries), any licorice/anise flavored things, root vegetables, beef, ham, green peppers, dried fruits, cooked fruit.

In Season: Cherimoyas

I love Cherimoyas, but I have a hard time finding them - does anyone have recommendations?

Eat for Eight Bucks: Minestrone

My (vegetarian) roommates and I lived off of soup over the summer...a little strange in the hot months, to be sure, but it was a great way to eat cheap, and use a lot of our leftover odds and ends from the Farmer's Market. We definitely made an awesome minestrone or two. Thanks for this recipe - looks great!

Going to Mexico (DF) -- what to bring back?

If you're going to get beer, don't bother with Corona...there are plenty of other awesome beers (Negra Modelo, etc.)

There are some really good kinds of candy to be had...mazapan, cajeta...some of it is available in the states, but...i'd say go for it!

Also, I got a hand-me-down lime press when I got my molcajete...I love it, and I bet they are available here too...but it's really handy :)

Safe travels!

Pix or not...?

I'm a bit on the fence about pictures. I like them for baking, mostly for sizing purposes, although for techniques drawings are fine too.

There is definitely something very lovely about having a cookbook with excellent pictures; yet, I tend to find, when cooking, things always turn out differently than i expect, and sometimes having a picture of what it is "supposed" to look like makes me feel like I haven't succeeded (even if the dish is awesome). That might sound silly, but yeah.

I will say, I am guilty of subscribing to Bon Appetit almost solely for the pictures...a lot of the recipes are out of my budget range, but they are gorgeous...

I wish I may, I wish I might...

berries. i know, right? not stawberries, but blueberries, blackberries, raspberries...ugh. i want so badly to like them, but it is a textural thing.and apples.

Add to that any cooked fruits - can't do cobblers, fruit pies, etc.

What else?
Raw tomatoes, squash, red peppers, anise-flavored anything.

Uf. So many wishes!

Weekend Cook and Tell: Unsung Heros of the Kitchen

my roommate and i spent this summer learning how to cook for ourselves, and we discovered for ourselves the awesomeness of onions. my mom doesn't really like onions or garlic (i know, right?), so i bever had the chance to cook with them at home. anyway, we made polenta and this ridiculously easy tomato-onion sauce, then layered the sliced polenta with the sauce and some ricotta, and baked it...wow.
