Boston vs. New York Food Super Bowl: Breaking It Down Food by Food

papa ginos! a pizza chain that is TOTALLY awesome. papa ginos is the best boston pizza, ok- it's not gourmet but it tastes GREAT. I also like sweet tomatoes and the upper crust...for more upscale pizza moods.

ice cream: toscaninis is my favorite, but i also like christina's quite a bit. herrell's is ok. not a huge fan of emack.

Most worthwhile lapse in good judgment?

streetfood in india- roadside dosas, grilled sandwiches, or chaat- pav bhaji, pani puri. all this food tastes so much better from the road but you're almost guaranteed a case of "dehli belly."

The Jewish-Chinese Fusion Question

I wish Indians were more a part of the Jew-Chinese xmas celebrations- south indian food is kosher, and most vegetarian indian food without cream and paneer is also kosher. actually, in nyc this year, it looks like the Jews and Chinese will be celebrating with the Indians at this cool thing:

free chinese food, wet hot american summer, and bhangra music. I wish I could be there to join as an Indian Hindu who never has anything to do on Xmas.

I think Cousin John's in Park Slope has excellent brioche and pecan danishes.
and Le Petit Prince in Astoria had excellent everything- croissants, cookies, fruit tarts, coffee...

Best Grilled Cheese Sandwiches in L.A., N.Y., and Everywhere: Where's Your Favorite?

i know this isn't pure grilled cheese- but the bombay version of grilled cheese also includes spicy cilantro chutney slathered onto the inside slices of bread, and boiled potatoes, tomatoes, red onions, green pepper, chaat masala and mountains of cheese all grilled inside the sandwich. it is truly amazing.

Wow, that's an amazing story, John. Would you consider posting the recipes on Serious Eats? Maybe we can find a pastry chef who will test the recipes.
I would love to work with you on getting these recipes on Serious Eats.

Mrs. Herbst's did not close because the ethnic enclave was disappearing. It close because the 3rd generation had moved on (for example, one is a physician in L.A.) and because the land had become so valuable that it was inevitable that it would be sold. But what a fabulous bakery it was. I have a loose-leaf binder with ALL of the Herbst recipes (including non-bakery food items). Long story - but my grandmpother and the original Mrs Herbst were friends in Hungary and came here at the same time. And my non-Hungarian wife can make a pretty good Dobos Torte and palascinta.

Trader Joe's Torture: What one thing do you have to buy?

They have cheap brie and those 100 calorie chocolate bars. Also, the dried fruit and veggie chips. Oh! There's also almond milk, trail mix, spinach pies when I'm too lazy to make my own...

I actually disagree with the bad reviews of Black Hound. I got excellent service - all the people working were fantastic and very attentive, and gave my friends and I free samples to try. I didn't really like the cakes though. I don't like sweet cakes too much, but theres could have done with a bit more
