Cook the Book: 'At Elizabeth David's Table'

mark bittman, michael pollan, mario batali, and deb perelman of smitten kitchen. also, my italian grandmother. i've also been really loving melissa clark lately -- i think she and i might have the same palate.

Cook the Book: 'Appetite for Reduction'

i recently realized that one of my favorite staple dinners is totally vegan: lemony red lentil soup with chile, and a raw broccoli salad with a garlicky, vinegary, sesame-ginger-soy dressing.

i can also love on some farro with roasted squash, rosemary vinaigrette, and steamed kale (topped with nutritional yeast, for extra yummy hippie factor).

Seriously Delicious Holiday Giveaway: La Quercia's Coppa Combo

Sugar Rush: Maple Hill Creamery's Maple Yogurt

maple yogurt of all kinds is my favorite. i will have to munch this one asap.

Win Tickets to This Weekend's NY Brewfest

Toss-up between Middle Ages (Wailing Wench!) and Southern Tier. Their Creme Brulee stout is the king of dessert beers as far as I'm concerned.

Another "dealbreaker" poll: s/he doesn't care for good food?!

I see it as a definite dealbreaker, not only because it would mean a lack of shared interest in food, but because preferring fast and/or microwaved foods reveals a sort of underlying mindset with which I just wouldn't be compatible. One of the things I like most about cooking and eating is the sense of creating something from scratch if I've made if myself, and knowing exactly what I'm putting into my body, and if I'm eating out I like to appreciate the craft that went into making my food. If my significant other couldn't understand that and preferred mass-produced food, I don't think I could handle it.

I agree about a meal being a communal experience and the strain created when people close to you are unable to fully share it -- one of my best friends has a history of eating disorders and it's really painful to eat with her.

Serious Beer: Summer Seasonals

i'm usually a fan of deep, dark beers and never know what to drink in the summer -- i usually go for brooklyn summer ale, dogfish head aprihop, or sam adams cherry wheat, so i'm glad for the suggestions to help me branch out this summer!

Cook the Book: Whole-Wheat Spaghetti with Kale

This is pretty much my go-to meal. So good.

French Restaurant Recs

26 seats is well under your price range if i remember correctly, the food is really good, and it's a pretty romantic space if that's your sort of thing.

oreo milkshakes in manhattan

i was hoping stand would do one (because i love their toasted marshmallow) but alas! will have to check out one of the others.

How do you brew your coffee?

Oh, so glad other people mentioned the Aeropress! I used to use drip coffeemakers but they are obsolete now. I make Americanos with it most mornings, and not only does it make awesome coffee, but it is a really fun toy.

Serious Heat: 25 Things To Do with Hot Sauce

i am notorious for putting hot sauce on everything, but my favorite is hot sauce on popcorn, minus the butter. mmmmmm.

oreo milkshakes in manhattan

okay, so imagine you have found yourself blenderless and have a mean hankering for an oreo milkshake. where would you go?

i'm a bit of a milkshake snob as a consequence of living off of milkshakes for over a month when my jaw was broken a few years ago, and i'd prefer to not go too far into other boroughs to satiate this craving, but if you guys can think of any place that definitely does oreo milkshakes, shoot it out there. thanks!

where can i go for a delicious, affordable birthday dinner?

i'm trying to think of a good place in the city to take my foodie boyfriend out for dinner on his birthday. i'd like to keep it in manhattan - preferably the west side (uptown/downtown doesn't matter as much), but the trek to the east side is doable too. nowhere too large and easily crowded, but somewhere we can eat super deliciously for about $20 or less each, as we are poor art-type students. do places like this exist? and do they take reservations? i was thinking along the lines of maybe the jim lahey pizza place in chelsea or 26 seats on the lower east side, but i'd love more suggestions if you guys have them.
