What foods are uniquely '80s'?

i think is more a function of the writer's age, than the food itself.

i associate many of those items with the 70's. and one or 2 w/ the 60's

i ate one, but wasn't impressed

Slice Pizzeria on Food Network

my review of this place from a few years ago on another site:

The concept is great here, but something is lacking in the execution, and that something is salt. I'm all for healthy eating, and I really wanted to love this place, but...
while the toppings are delicious and creative, the crust, which to me is make or break on a pizza, tastes flat, because of a real lack of salt in the dough. Salt has been demonized out of proportion to its deleterious effects, which only exist if one already has certain conditions, like high blood pressure. Perhaps they could still offer a low salt crust, and add one for people who want crust to have more flavor than cardboard.

it has to be 30 years since i ate here

now i have to go back

Why Can't You Get a Good Slice Outside New York City? 'Wired' Magazine Says It's the Water

how could the chemical composition of the water NOT effect the quality of the pizza. the simpler the dish, the more impact the water will have on it, and pizza dough is flour water salt and yeast. water is a HUGE component.

there are many other issues eg sauce, cheese, oven temp, mixing technique, - and no one is saying that the right water automatically amkes a good pizza - that would be a logical fallacy not being claimed anywhere - ie saying it can't be the water because i've had bad pizza in NYC, makes no sense

and for those posters who said otherwise i have read of several places in cali that do mix their own water/mineral mix to approximate NY water.

Soda, cola, pop, coke, etc.?

From NYC

soda is any bubbly beverage. if it has no flavoring it is seltzer, or club soda (which is really seltzer w/ salt)

cola is a flavor for soda

coke is a brand of cola

pop is your father, or what someone does to you when they hit you w/ their fist

The Phaal Challenge at Brick Lane Curry House: Spiciest Curry Ever?

My sister and I did the P'haal challenge today. We each finished in about 20, maybe 25 minutes. She was sweating and her eyes were tearing. I didn't sweat but I actually had two bouts of dizziness, my hands shook a little and my ears clogged up for about two minutes towards the end. But we got through it pretty easily. Our trick was not to touch the water or any drink at ALL. The only thing we added was maybe 1/4 of the rice bowl.

MY trick was to save the chicken for the end. The sauce did NOT soak into the chicken and by the end the temperature had gone down considerably, so the chicken almost had a cooling effect.

I do NOT recommend anyone does this at the 53rd St. location - they don't have a liquor license so they gave us a coupon for a free beer...which we can redeem down on 6th St. So we have to go to the Village anyway. That was a big disappointment. They also didn't take our picture - we have to email it to the guy in the Village.

Soda. The stuff I don't drink.

Coke is only for Coca Cola and Cocaine.

I live in california. Have lived here nearly all my life, and have always refered to it as coke no matter what I am drinking. I live in Riverside, CA but have also lived in San Diego, CA growing up and we called it the same in both places. Not sure who calls it soda sounds strange. But my cousins come down from Virginia and they call it Pop. Thought they were talking about those little pop rock candies the first time they asked for a pop. lol.

The Phaal Challenge at Brick Lane Curry House: Spiciest Curry Ever?

did it today. so proud. still burping up heat hours later and drinking some beers. worried about how i'm gonna feel in a few hours. we didn't use yogurt or milk or anything to pad the heat except for some rice and naan. i find a nice glass of coke helps a lot, maybe its the sugar or the carbonation? water does nothing. i actually enjoyed the taste of it too, but the worst part was that it's so hot it's hard to even think straight. my friend and i would be in mid sentence and just trail off, losing our concentration. my advice to those who want to try this: be sure that you really actually can tolerate heavy spice. i eat spicy food frequently but the sheer buildup of heat with this dish is very overwhelming. also don't rush yourself but don't fill up on acoutrements like bread because it is a very filling dish. also when you do finally finish, take your time and rest a bit. we really savored our free beers and within about half an hour we felt fine but full. great way to spend an afternoon though! and i must add that the service and quality of this restaurant is really good, especially for a 6th street indian joint. i'll definitely go back for other (less painful) dishes in the future.

The Phaal Challenge at Brick Lane Curry House: Spiciest Curry Ever?

We came, we saw, we were defeated. This dish did a number on our stomachs and we had to throw in the towel. Looking back on it, I know what our biggest mistakes were, and I think that I will go back and complete the challenge one day. What we did wrong was drink way too much liquids(lots of water and 2 yogurt drinks), as well as eat a lot of appetizers. The death blow was mixing a lot of rice in with the curry. The curry has to be eaten fast. I know for next time. I did enjoy the taste though!
We did get a picture with the cook in his gasmask. That ruled. LETS GO RANGERS!

Me and my buddy Mike are going there tomorrow to take on the challenge. We love all that is hot and will be sure not to dissapoint. I will chronicle our tale of heat heroics next week. Wish us luck. I hope we are not asking the waiter for a fire hose to put out the flames!

From Serious Eats: New York

The Phaal Challenge at Brick Lane Curry House: Spiciest Curry Ever?

The dish tastes absolutely terrible which adds to the chore of eating it. It is indeed one of the spiciest dishes I've ever eaten. I thought that being half Malaysian would help me deal with it, but I was the last of my group to finish it. Five of us ordered it, all but one finished it.

Uhm, anyone else get a burning sensation when doing the #1? Cuz I sure did... that spicy!

What foods are uniquely '80s'?

As a former 80s teen, I can make a whole grocery list of treats, goodies, delicacies and delights that first appeared on the food scene or rose to popularity in the 80s.

Diet coke
cherry coke
cherry 7-Up
Snapple beverages
fruit snacks
microwave popcorn
Capri Sun pouched beverages
juice boxes
Cinnamon Toast Crunch cereal
sun-dried tomatoes
pasta salad
Nerds candy
Bonkers candy
Blue raspberry flavored items (including Berry Blue Kool-Aid which looked like Windex but was very tasty stuff!)
Frozen yogurt (the sweet, ice-creamy type, not the more acidy stuff you get at places like Pinkberry in today's times)
"Gourmet" jellybeans (like the Jelly Belly brand, made popular by then-head-honcho Reagan)
Stuffed baked potatoes
Fried potato skins
Mozzarella sticks

Dang it, now I have an urge to put on a miniskirt and some flavored lip gloss and munch on some fruit snacks and sip a Capri Sun beverage while listening to "Let's Dance" by David Bowie!

To the person missing cherry 7-up they still make it. I get it in Philly all the time.

Having grown up in southern California in the 80's I desperately miss Cactus Cooler. I also loved Monterey Jack Cheese Doritos.

I did a lot of dining at Sizzler in the 80's.

I'm from Kentucky so everything is Coke. My husband is from Chicago so he says pop. It can get confusing.

From Talk

Soda, cola, pop, coke, etc.?

I always call it soda. I have a friend that had recently moved to the area, (she always called it soda too), when she started dating a guy from the area... country guy. He stopped at the "jiffy store" one day and asked her "hey, ya wanna cold drank"? She said sure, but the next day she asked me about this. She thought that maybe some of us bumpkins actually drank our soda hot. She couldn't understand why he had to preface "drank" with the word cold. I will remember this forever.

The new chef at the formerly good French restaurant I worked at made, for a special one week, veal scaloppini with an grapefruit avocado sauce.
I left town shortly thereafter.

From Talk

What foods are uniquely '80s'?

I'd have to agree that a lot of the foods mentioned above predated the '80s by a lot. Even microwave ovens for home use were a '70s thing. My grandmother got an original Radarange when they first came out. She remodeled her kitchen around a built-in model. This was in '73.

I was with her when she saw it demonstrated at an appliance store. It was like magic. The demonstrator put little slices of hot dog on a PAPER plate, covered it with a paper towel and it was sizzling hot in THIRTY SECONDS! Unheard of!

The good news is that the microwave (that is now 35 years old!) still works beautifully. It had to have a broken dial replaced a decade or so ago and the repairman tested it for leaks. It was still leak-free! They sure don't make 'em like they used to.
