Need Great Austin Eats!

Lulu Bs is a new trailer at Oltorf and South Lamar with Bahn Mi, Summer rolls and vermicelli. Hot Dog King at 8th and Red River at night kicks serious butt as well. Torchy's Tacos (Two locations on South First, one on West 6th) has decent tacos, Whole Foods Market at 6th and Lamar is amazing as well (and has a little bit of everything). The afore mentioned P. Terry's and Flip Happy are also great places.

For fancy stuff, Uchi is great but will probably have long waits, Starlite on Colorado is outstanding, as are Restaurant Jezebel on Congress and Aquarelle on (I'm not sure...West maybe?).

Azul, the sandwich place is now closed, but Azul Tequila, an interior Mexican place, is supposed to be good. Sazon on South Lamar is awesome for Mexican too.

I swear by Thomas Keller's method on Epicurious. Perfect every time (I leave off the butter and thyme) and I've passed it on to many people who love it as much as I do.

Too funny, I just discovered these and have been making them quite a bit. And I'm going to be making them again tonight. Yay me!

Dinner Tonight: Bourdain's Mushroom Soup

This is a good recipe. I tend to mess with it a little bit by adding some dried mushrooms and their soaking liquid, just because I like a little stronger taste.

And Blake, I must respectfully disagree about roast chicken being an art. I use Keller's method and it's the easiest, no brainer thing in the world. I've turned a ton of friends onto it, and when I make it for people, they swoon. So simple, my dog could do it :)

Gone but not forgotten

Carnation Breakfast Bars, and not the chewy ones that came out at the end of their reign, but the Peanut Butter Crunch, or the Chocolate Chip Peanut Butter flavors. My college roommate and I lived on these things. We've done extensive internet searches to find out why/who we can contact about bringing these things back.

Also, Morton's Cinnamon Donuts (too funny, we were just talking about these at work the other day) and those Howard Johnson's Corn Toasty things.

I did try frying them, like real potato chips, but I have to say I don't recommend it, unless somehow you can get the kale bone dry. http://felonykirsch.wordpress.com/2009/11/05/the-kale-chip-experiment/

Dinner Tonight: Bourdain's Mushroom Soup

This recipe is pretty awesome. I made this using the liquid from rehydrating dried mushrooms I needed for another recipe and enough water to get to the 4 cups of stock called for. I also used shallots in place of the onion and substituted shiitake mushrooms for half the button mushrooms (ok, so I used the outline of the recipe as an excuse to clean out my freezer, pantry and fridge). I drizzled the sherry called for in the recipe over the individual servings in the bowls and added a small dollop of sour cream and a sprinkling of chives. This soup is totally going into the regular rotation!

Dinner Tonight: Bourdain's Mushroom Soup

This recipe was as advertised: (1) delicious and (2) dimple to make.

I made this recipe "as is" but with one major alteration. I sauteed the mushrooms and onions until they were *very* browned (like Pastor Ryan's Mushrooms at Pioneer Woman's blog). This alteration added a noticeable depth of flavor to the original recipe. It also darkened the color, so keep that in mind if that's a consideration.

If you don't have sherry I think you could easily use dry white wine, and if you like it that way invest in sherry for the future. Or stay with the white wine. Personally I have started using shaoxing wine instead of sherry for most recipes. I like it's subtler flavor. I do have to go to an oriental grocery to get it.

I registered specifically to add my desire for
Regal Crown Sour Cherries!
I had a craving for them suddenly and went online to look for them only to find out they are discontinued. I am sad.

I also want to add one more gone but not forgotten, but I think I may be the only person who has ever eaten this cereal:
Concentrate
It turned to mush when milk was added and had a great taste. I guess most folks like their cereal crunchy but I never did.

Thanks to all for the suggestions! Here's a little write-up on what I found:

http://readkitchen.blogspot.com/2008/04/now-serving-austin.html

I especially loved Bouldin Creek Cafe and Lamberts. I wasn't able to write about Longhouse or Club de Ville, but they were fabulous bars hidden away from all of the hubub. Wish I'd had more time to explore the nooks and crannies a bit more, but perhaps next time!

My favorite cereal of all time ...
General Mills "JETS" (when they were shaped like Trix or Kix )

They changed the shapes to space vehicles and planes.
The taste and texture changed to something like Alpha-Bits. Not nearly as good.

I'm 56 and I still miss them!

Regal Crown Sour Cherry candies. Oh my god, they were awesome. And McDonald's Cherry Pie, deep fried, which was so ridiculously good I could barely stand it. Also, (head hanging in shame) Butoni used to make these toaster pizzas that I was addicted to. Even as I ate them I knew they were crap, and didn't care.

I'm noticing a theme here. Garbage. But, oh, so tasty garbage.

Gardetto's mustard pretzels. Though technically not discontinued, I have not been able to find them anywhere - and I've looked in every gas station and grocery store I've gone to for the last five years.

Also, Coke II. I used to live in American Samoa (where, apparently, it's still sold), and drank it daily. It was the only soda I ever drank on a regular basis, and I really liked it. I was sad to find out that it wasn't sold in the contenential States.

Charles' Chips. A Philly delicacy. They were put in a large can and they actually used to deliver them to peoples' homes. My grandparents used to get them all the time. This is when chips were fried in lard, but man o man, so good, y'all.

My sis , I and our kids went through a drive through zoo down in gentry ark years ago. They had gobs of baby chicks crated up to feed to the animals and snakes. The guy that worked there mentioned they had to many chicks and we could take some. The kids wanted to save the chicks from being ate so we ended up taking home a crate of them. Big Mistake. Baby chicks make a whole top of noise in a small car along with 2 kids.when we got home we had no where to put them so a neighbor took them.Talk about a headache.lol

Former latchkey child here. I was attempting to be the responsible one and start dinner with Shake and Bake Chicken in the oven. I must have set the temperature wrong, because it took an eternity to cook it thoroughly. What can I say, I was but a lad!

A few years ago my husband bought me one of those "set it and forget it" rotisseries for Christmas. What I didn't realize was it the wings or legs slipped out of the cooking twine, they could keep the rotisserie from turning and you'd be sorry you 'forgot it' as you'd have half a burned chicken and half a raw chicken! I think I'll stick to good old fashioned oven roasting from now on!

Why did the chicken cross the road? To get into my oven. It's a true story. I checked my oven. There's a roasted chicken in there that would make Julia Child proud.

Once upon a time there was a woman that really liked chicken, but she wasn't very good at cooking it. So she tried a lot of different recipes, but she just never was sure it was cooked completely. Then one day she met a wonderful man. He was a superb cook and would make her chicken any way she wanted it whenever she wanted it. They lived happily ever after.

I need a new way to roast a chicken. I have only stuffed it and roasted, pretty boring but I must admit tasty. Chicken is one of my very favorite foods. this book would sure help out and maybe my husband would enjoy it as much as I do.

the first time i let my daughter barbeque by herself, she was doing a great job, and the chicken looked fantastic! When they're done she brings them inside and i we can't wait to eat them. we're just about to eat and we notice that the fire in the bbq had started up again and the flames are big so we go outside to try and put it out. We can't have been outside for 2 minutes. We go back inside, ready to eat, and what do we see? the plate that the chicken was on, on the floor, and the chicken, or at least what was left of the chicken, scattered around the table. And our dog Ziggy sitting there with bbq sauce all over his hairy guilty little face. Damn dog!
