Birthday Party for 15 in NYC?

I recently threw a birthday party at vento in the meatpacking district. We sat on the 2nd floor and had a small area to ourselves. The food was good and the wine was perfect. Apps, pizzas, pastas, etc. It was extremely reasonably priced as well. We were then able to just walk across the street to continue our night out. Great location.

Primehouse Serves a Great Steakhouse Burger, But Without Dry Aged Flavor

I have recently been to Primehouse and enjoyed the burger just as much as you did. I did not mind the bun though. The smaller the better for me. I also had their bananas foster for dessert and it was absolutely amazing.

Look into Italian Wine Merchants also in Union Square. I hear they offer great classes.

I don't know Brooklyn at all, but Ocean Grill on the UWS is great for Sunday brunch. I recently went with a large group and we all had a good meal and a good time. They have a really comprehensive brunch menu so you have lots to choose from.

Good Veggie Burger in NYC?

I recently went to Isabella's on the UWS and had a really good veggie burger. Not sure if it still on the menu as it was a month or two ago, but I recommend it. You may also want to try Pump Energy Food. I hear they have good veggie burgers too.

Best place to eat for Mom in NYC

My mom loves Blue Water Grill in Union Square. We go there whenever she comes to visit me, which is 3-4 times a year. It has a jazz room where we like to sit sometimes and other times we like to sit on the balcony that overlooks union square so we can people watch. It is reasonably priced too and I always have a very good meal there.

Great Mexican in the city

i always have a good time at dos caminos. they have tableside guacamole, good tacos and really fun drinks. it is a good place to go with a group too. i like to go to the one down on houston and sit outside when it is nice out. zarela is also good.

I second Atlantic Grill. It is always so good, but make a reservation as sometimes there is a wait. Annie's is also very good on the UES.

Cooking Classes in NYC

The chef at Fiamma is doing cooking classes. I have not taken one, but I heard from a friend that it was a fun class and the food was delicious. Something a little different than ICE as you are in a true restaurant kitchen, which may be interesting to see the behind-the-scenes work.

Good Brunch in NYC with not too long of a wait!

Agreed- reservations are a must for a good brunch. Definitely try Stantion Social, Sarabeth's, Blue Water Grill, Five Points. I recently went to brunch at Primehouse NY, yes it is a steakhouse, but they had a great brunch. The food was delicious. There was very little wait and the staff was good to us. It something different to try out. Stay away from Norma's. It is a great brunch, but it is so stressful with waiting and I feel like they rush you out in order to keep the tables turning.

Chelsea Market Eats?

in chelsea market there is also a hale and hearty soup, which has soups and salads. amy's bread is great for sandwiches and sarabeth's has some special-type sandwiches as well. there are tons of bakeries like ruthys and fat witch, both of which are amazing. old homestead steakhouse is nearby as is vento, an italian restaurant with outdoor seating. i like vento because it is good food and very reasonably priced.

Birthday restaurant with boss near Times Square? Suggestions please!

Times Square is tough, but I recently went to a work dinner at Blue Fin at the W Hotel and it was a lot of fun. They have good food and a really comprehensive drink menu. I had a bunch of sushi that was fresh and my co-workers all enjoyed their meals. Some had sushi while others had the steak or chicken. It is fun, loud and a good scene. Makes for good conversation.

Celebrities Get Free Burgers with Burger King Crown Gold Card

Yet again celebrities receiving freebies that they can more than afford. Can't they tie in a charity or something? This just seems ridiculous for these ultra rich to get a free $3 burger.

Initial Report: Five Napkin Burger, Hell's Kitchen

That does not look the least bit appetizing to me. There is way too much meat and the cheese looks like it is barely melted. All these burger places are trying to outdo each other. I think giving the option of a smaller burger, or maybe even a few sliders is brilliant.

Flatiron Wasteland

wildwood bbq on 18th and park is brand new and super yummy. there is goodburger on 17th and broadway, which is a fast food type place but surprisingly very good. chop't the best tossed salad place in nyc is on 16th btwn broadway and 5th and there is always houstons, dos caminos, park avenue bistro and primehouse up on park at like 27th. you really cannot go wrong on park avenue south.

Don't go to kingswood....worst service ever and average food....had crab eggs benedict and the crab was straight out of can. There is a reason why the place is wide open....I am sure you newyorkers can figure out why

From A Hamburger Today

Initial Report: Five Napkin Burger, Hell's Kitchen

Headed up to Five Napkin last weekend and I gotta say, not only was the burger juicy, it was way too juicy, if there is such a thing. A burger medium rare had bloody juices pouring out at every bite. My plate was sloshing with gore after 3 bites. I was so distracted, I had to ask for another plate. I guess I'm a lot more squeamish than I thought, but it was a little freaky. The rosemary aioli is overpowering and the melted Comté made this beast of a burger slide around annoyingly in its bun. It was a hard one to tackle. It's neighbor, Island Burger, has a fantastic burger without the fancy pants price tag.

Birthday Party for 15 in NYC?

Last year, a friend had a holiday party at a restaurant called Aroma, and he is doing it again this year. Aroma has a beautiful private room, that I recall sits abou 20. I think they are willing to do either sit down dinners or appetizers/wine. It is a really lovely space. http://www.aromanyc.com/index.html

I'd totally go with Alta. http://altarestaurant.com/
Then you can get everything on the menu for $350 or as they call it "The Whole Shebang." If you don't get that, it is still so reasonably priced.

I took the "Navigating a Restaurant Wine List" class at Bottlerocket (19th Street b/w 5th & 6th) and found it fun & very informative. I believe they have a 4-week class series.

Otto does a quick one (i think its 2 hours, and about $45). Its not a great "course" (there's not too much discussion of the wine) but you get to try about 8 wines with a few snacks. its a great thing to try on a sunday afternoon with nothing to do.

Sunday Brunch in Brooklyn OR UWS

I just read over the UWS comments in the thread Alaina linked to, and yeah they're good, but 40 blocks south of where you were thinking.

bagel
absolute bagels on broadway & 107 is my favorite bagelry in new york

crepes
crepes on columbus, columbus & 108ish

general brunch
zanny's cafe across columbus is not bad either, but is kind of tiny.
community food & juice on broadway @ 113th is quite good, especially if you want organic or sustainably-raised bacon.
kitchenette on amsterdam @ 122ish is good, but has ungodly crowds on sundays

hearty hangover cures
miss mamie's spoonbread too - southern food on 110th between amsterdam and columbus.
taqueria y fonda la mexicana - huevos rancheros anyone? I eat there often, but it is not for the faint-stomached.

From Talk

Good Veggie Burger in NYC?

I'd go to Paul's on 2nd Ave and St. Mark's--their veggie burger is amazing, and they will do it up like any of the regular specialty burgers.

From Talk

Good Veggie Burger in NYC?

The Shake Shack burger was okay - not as great as I was expecting it to be. But I'd definitely stop there for the custard. A friend of mine was always raving about Curly's Vegetarian Lunch Counter - I'd definitely try there.

And if you're the sort of vegetarian who can bear the idea of a veggie burger being cooked side by side with regular burgers, Bonnie's Grill in Brooklyn does a really really good veggie burger. Be sure and get it topped with the jalapenos and pickles and get the veggie chili as your side dish. Your omnivore friends will love their burgers as well. Bonnie's is near the Union St. R train stop so it is easily accessible from Manhattan.

Oh man I'm hungry now.

billyburgerwife and savecara, zen opened a new restaurant called dang lai palace on 3rd ave and 17th st - menu is largely the same, a little more expensive, i think - http://menupages.com/restaurantdetails.asp?areaid=0&restaurantid=52513&neighborhoodid=0&cuisineid=68&home=Y

as for a good veggie burger... i've never been disappointed by the one at heartland brewery. and also stand has GREAT veggie burgers and really good fries (but is probably a little more expensive than most)

wow, thanks for all the replies, serious eaters!

From Talk

def quantum leap. there are a couple locations (that i know of) in manhattan and the variety is pretty mind-boggling.

From Talk

Good Veggie Burger in NYC?

@billyburgwife: yes, the Union Sq location closed, sadly. It used to be the affordable, non-pizza/fast food place to eat when I lived down there, while NYU was busy stealing all my money.

However, awhile back, I was going to a training at the Red Cross headquarters when I spotted the new location. Smaller than the old one, and the menu has changed only slightly, but the quality of the food is still the same (prices are probably a little higher). On the site, there's also apparently one downtown.

From Talk

I second the one at Houston's... tasty!

From Talk

Good Veggie Burger in NYC?

my favorite veggie burger is at kate's, on the corner of 4th and avenue B. i don't know if they make it there or what, but it's always the perfect balance of crispy outside and soft lentily inside. my favorite is the one with cheddar, portobello, and garlicky spinach on top. yum.

it's really too bad you don't like portobellos though, i just had the shake shack 'shroom burger for the first time a couple weeks ago and it was mindblowingly awesome. in fact, if you try it, you might not even be able to find the mushroom amidst the deluge of melted cheese. (!!!!)

one more. if you go to dojo, i think the hijiki tofu sandwich is better than the veggie burger. crunchy seaweed in tofu = best sandwich. oh, and you can also get killer fake-meat sandwiches at tiny's on the LES.

From Talk

Good Veggie Burger in NYC?

Broadway East has a delicious one.

From Talk

Good Veggie Burger in NYC?

The veggie burger at Dojo is really good. My current favorite is the 'shroom burger at Shake Shack, however. I have never been to Candle Cafe on the UES, but I have heard only good things from vegetarian and non-vegetarian friends alike.

From Talk

Good Veggie Burger in NYC?

I'm a fan of the Soy Burger at Dojo's near NYU. Get it in the pita with the carrot tahini dressing and you won't be able to put it down (because if you did, it would fall apart entirely. It's a messy meal).

From Talk

Good Veggie Burger in NYC?

Ditto to Quantum Leap. I'm not a vegetarian but they really impressed me. I think they make all of their own veggie burgers in house, too.

From Talk

Good Veggie Burger in NYC?

red bamboo (w. 4 between 6th and macdougal in the village) and quantum leap (i think thompson bet. 3rd and bleecker in the village or 1st and 12th in e. vil.) have some good ones (all their stuff is good, both places). the 'shroom burger at shake shack is great, but it is a portobello (but deep fried and stuffed with cheese!) have also heard good things about curly's.

@savecara, i'd heard zen palate closed? (that was the one by union square, right?)

From Talk

I like Downtown Bakery on 1st ave in the East Village. Pretty authentic.
