Whoa. Whale? That'd fascinating and sorta sad all at the same time. Was it similar to Swordfish?

The best whale you get in Iceland is sold in the supermarket. It's marinated and thinly sliced and you pop it on the grill for like 2 minutes each side and you've got yourself a nice meal. Tastes like beef but with more complex flavour, like Robyn noted before, a little gamey. Also, try whale carpaccio, it's brilliant if it's done just right.

it's better than castiglione, gelatauro (which isn't all it's hyped up to be, imo) and gianni by far. the pistacchio was actually really good, the strawberry was amaaazing and full of real fruit pieces and such rich flavor, and my favorite flavor was tortina di funavia, which was basically a coldstone-ish mix of chocolate gelato with pieces of chocolate cake (hence, tortino). AMAZING, you have to get that as at least one of your flavors! plus fun fact: they put liquid-y chocolate in the bottom of your cestino/cup if you get the "alice" flavor (mascarpone and something else). i live about 2 minutes away while i'm abroad for the semester and it's pretty dangerous for my waistline...but so worth it! go sit in the little courtyard in piazza cavour afterward with friends :)
Snapshots from Iceland: Overloaded Open-Face Sandwich
I'm from Scandinavia (Sweden), you seem to be intrested so...
That's a pretty common sandwich over here, like someone said - IKEA does a pretty good version of this. It's intended to be eaten with knife and fork, in most places people would think it's a bit rude to eat with your hands.
What you call a "open face sandwich" is just a sandwich to us. What you call a sandwich, we call a "double sandwich". Usually you only use two slices of bread if you go on a picnic, for practical reasons.
Different styles, but I tell you... I miss those american style sandwiches over here.

@teaspotnyc: I'm sorry that my post is unacceptable for you. To me, a discussion about whaling is beyond the scope of what a "Snapshots from Iceland" post is (not to say that such a post isn't warranted), which I thought of as short, simple posts about unique things I ate/saw in Iceland. Judging from the comments on this post though, it was the wrong thing to choose though because it's not that simple.

Yeah, sorry, I know it's an emotional issue... but this is pretty appalling. Really seriously unimpressed.
Snapshots from Iceland: Grilled Whale from Saegreifinn
I agree with Karyn. Of course, this is an emotional issue on both sides, so it is tough to find unbiased sources of data on whale populations. I don't judge people based on what their diets. But when you choose to eat whale (or any other food), I think it's crucial to take its provenance into consideration.
I've always considered Serious Eats an unmatched source for culinary information and exploration. But to run a piece like this without even mentioning the fervent debate about whaling- and the fact that the International Whaling Commission outlawed all commercial whaling in 1986- seems irresponsible at best, and negligent at worst. Isn't it hypocritical to promote shopping for local produce, getting to know your farmers at the market, etc., and then ignore the decades of history on this issue?
Snapshots from Iceland: Grilled Whale from Saegreifinn
I would never eat whale. Even before I went veg, I would not have eaten whale.
One, I am not convinced that eating whale is sustainable – everyone who reports the health of the minke whale population seems to have a vested interest in doing so (though the opposite perhaps is also true). The whaling industry certainly does not have a good track record. And yes, I know that the minke whale is not considered endangered, though I have read that its population may be well below its previous numbers.
Second, I don't think that whales can be killed humanely. They're too large. As far as I know, whalers still use harpoons that penetrate the whale, then explode within its body. Then the whalers haul the whale onto the ship. I cannot imagine that the whale feels no pain through all of that – especially since there's no way to guarantee an immediate death with harpooning. Yes, whale is about as "free range" as you can get, but I don't think that whales can be killed without undue suffering (as can, perhaps, deer). I would much rather support the whale-watching industry.
I tried to find links, but couldn't find any from non-biased sources. Boo.

Sorry to be a downer - no one's a bad person for having eaten whale. It's just not a decision that I would be comfortable making.
Snapshots from Iceland: Grilled Whale from Saegreifinn
my initial reaction was total revulsion...upon further reflection I'm not sure why I reacted that way. I've never had a whale for a pet.
Snapshots from Iceland: Grilled Whale from Saegreifinn
I've had whale meat before, but I don't think it's worth eating (well unless I'm starving to death and there is nothing else to eat), because it doesn't taste that great and I got too attached to whales after living in Hawaii :-(
Snapshots from Iceland: Grilled Whale from Saegreifinn
@thatjamiegirl8: I can't recall what swordfish tastes like, but unless swordfish tastes like beef I'd think probably not.
Snapshots from Iceland: Grilled Whale from Saegreifinn
I have tried both minke and beluge whale. There is no comparison between the two, minke is hands down the winner for taste and texture. Beluge is very strong in taste and way too fishy.
Snapshots from Iceland: Grilled Whale from Saegreifinn
I guess I'm not such a serious eater after all... I don't think I could choke down whale.
Snapshots from Iceland: Grilled Whale from Saegreifinn
I actually had some very poor tasting whale at Saegreifinn, oily and dry, just foul.
I buy my whale at the Kolaportid flea market, it's cheap and tastes fantastic. I tend to eat it raw, sashimi style with soy and wasabi.
The taste is like Robyn says, beefy with a hint of sea, if that makes any sense. But that's only when it's fresh, it tastes like steak dipped in cod liver oil however if it's not fresh.

I think it's piped on mayo.

Does anyone know, or is anyone able to imagine how the eggs were handled to create those lovely grooves?
Snapshots from Iceland: Overloaded Open-Face Sandwich
This looks just like many a sandwiche we ate while traveling in Scandinavia. Also, love IKEA cafeteria lunches! and take-home snacks. A lot of Scandinavian cookies, etc. aren't as sweet as ours.
Snapshots from Iceland: Overloaded Open-Face Sandwich
The IKEA cafeteria makes a pared down version of this that tastes surprisingly fresh!

I remember in the early 70's eating at relatives of my husband in Holland - there was bread, ham, cheese, on the table and I remember well how the table went entirely quiet when I put ham AND cheese on one piece of bread, then added another piece of bread on top - they had never seen anything like it!
I have to admit though that the above open faced sandwich looks mighty fine - I could cosy up to that, and I will - here in Canada, it is one of the Sandwiches offered at Ikea cafe!

oooh, that is so nice.

Some really talented chef's, although lacking in a true representation of the entire country, should produce some great food. But when the likes of Doogie Howser is a judge IT'S OFFICIAL-TOP CHEF HAS JUMPED THE SHARK ! I was a big fan at first but as seasons passed it started to wane with some huge a##holes ( remember Stefan, Hosea and the Italian guy he was so great I forgot his name ) and egotistic neurotics ( like the last woman don't mean to be sexist as there were a number of men that fit here in seasons before ) with a lot of failed execution of dishes by them all too many for a "TOP CHEF". But again Doogie Howser PLEEZE how much did he pay to be a judge. Is he trying to jumpstart his beyond dead career. Isn't he a regular on Hollywood Squares or Nickelodeon or Mickey Mouse Club. Why not me as a judge then as I refuse to eat or even taste any organs and will not hesitate to spit something bad out on the spot. But this is only my opinion pleeze don't take offense if you like it now as everyone has their own opinion and are entitled to it. So enjoy the show or simply don't watch it, the latter being my choice.
How to Make S'meeps: S'mores Plus Peeps
so we had our s'meeps party last night - these are pretty darn good. used 60% cacao and baked them in the toaster oven. Oddly enough their eyes disintegrate!! which you'll note in the photos above. since they can't see the desctruction I feel humane 9or so i thought - read on)!
i like my s'meeps "topless" (no upper graham topper) and used my hands to eat them which was fun - but pretty gooey. I would reccomend using utensils if enjoying these as part of a fine dining experience - as i'm sure many plan to...
lastly i should note that I had 2 very vivid and strange nightmares following the s'meeps dining experience....they didn't involve peeps, but people, so proceed with caution. This was brought on by a single serving of s'meeps!

I wonder if the bunny and the chick have ever gone head to head in the microwave race....
lastly - the Wall o'Peeps at Target always makes me smile! :)
