Leftovers: The Day's Stray Links

I've had the Arctic RR burger a few times. The burger was on the loose side (good) but overcooked (bad) on all occasions. Additionally they glop on the mayo way too much. They succeed at turning an otherwise excellent burger into a just average offering.

Bummed About Burgers

Having grown up on a farm...how come nobody of the vegan/vegetarian community ever mentions the scores of animals i.e. bird young and eggs, mice, voles, insects, killed by plows, discs, cultivators etc. while growing the grain to make that 12 grain organic loaf of bread? Doesn't matter if you are a vegan, vegetarian, carnivore, herbivore or only eat fish....something is dying to feed you.

Paula Deen Is Trying to Kill Us, Part 4: Bacon, Doughnut, Egg Burger

New York Times had Donut Pudding printed a few weeks ago. Made it twice and pased it around to friends. Made more raspberry jelly for the second batch and doubled the # of donuts for a really large pan. If you decide to make some kind of donut thing, don't use Dunkin Donuts. They don't have enough jelly in them unless you are driving and eating a donut with the other hand. You can order big ones from the Stop & Shop. Frozen dough, sure but they hold a lot of jelly and when you add cream, eggs and sugar. Yum.

How to Order a McDonald's 2 Cheeseburger Extra Value Meal With No Cheese

Hey. I work at McDonald's and you apparently have some misinformation there. We do in fact have a 2 hamburger button, but it is located at the bottom of the screen (I guess some people don't see it?). Unfortunately every McDonald's has its own setup of the interface, so some restaurants may or may not have the option. And when it comes to having problems with wanting 2 hamburgers, this should not be an issue (unless the cashier is a total retard, which believe me, in my year and a half I have seen plenty of those). We do strive for customer satisfaction and I personally am more than happy to make special accomodations for any customer, especially something as simple as hitting 'no' and 'cheese'...

I hesitate to step in, after all the hoo-ha over what processed means, but why assume that "university-tested" was wrong? Citing some ag school study makes more sense to me than "universally tested." Or maybe you're right — I guess it would fit a sort of airy, holistic sort of feel.

Organique: A 'Better Burger' That's Not All That Bad

Nick-I just wanted to chime in and say that I'm on your side here. I don't see these people raising their own cows and growing their own grain for bread, etc, so who knows how many steps their precious food goes through before it gets to their mouth?

The more important question here, however, is this: Why was this argument started in the first place? Either because Simon is a hopeless pedantic for pure semantics, or because the idea that something is "processed" offends him somehow. Just because something is processed doesn't mean it's evil, OR necessarily unhealthy--but you notice he's not arguing on that point, he's attacking your term so that he can justify liking a certain kind of food without having to admit to eating "processed" food.

That's the kind of thinking that makes people plunk down money to fund elitist places like Organique that make their living out of customers who are that easily frightened by the fact that we are not living in the Stone Age. Granted, I'll bet the owners and operators of the place suffer from the same delusion, but really! Give me a break!

Overdoing It at Laurel Tavern in Studio City

Why is food in L.A. so ordinary? The San Fernando Valley is even worse. Even Pittsburgh and Austin have quirky culinary outposts, restaurants that have one of a kind goodies. We get reviews of yet another hamburger grill. WHY? We eat too. What is it with this town. Where is our Fergus Henderson? Where is our Old Tyme Tavern Brain Sandwich, our Avec? Yeah, we got hip and cool, and it's utterly trendy and sometimes it's even edible, if you can get it and if you can pay the tab and if you get there before the crowd moves on and they fire the old chef and hire somebody who works for a lot less. Even a deli...where is our pastrama? It ain't at Nate & Als, or Jerry's Deli, or Solly's. And believ me, I've been to Art's Deli and every sandwich is not a work of art. It's a work of some meat packing plant in Dubuque that never heard from hot, greasy, juicy, spicy pastrami.
Where are the good places??? Sorry, I skipped lunch and am a little overwrought.

Bummer about the overcooking. I have to say that I was a little turned on by the Old School Burger when I first scanned your photos. (Which are nice by the way.) Maybe it's exactly as you say-- I'm getting tired of hearing about all of the onion, fancy cheese, spinach, various sauce iterations on the burger. Juicy meat, soft bun, ketchup-- I had high hopes. Alas, sorry that it didn't add up. As a child, my standard was a cheeseburger with mayo only. Haven't ordered that way in ages, but your post has inspired me to give it a shot again.

From A Hamburger Today

Overdoing It at Laurel Tavern in Studio City

Just based on looks the burgers look good, but oh how can the eyes deceive us! It is a shame that you got all 3 done overcooked and at that point I would probably throw in the towel for the place and most likely not come back.

Dissapointing to see that the steak fries weren't good. I am the first to admit that I love steak fries and would take them over regular fries any day as they have the tendecy to be on the softer side. Fine I said....I like soft fries. It is a weakness that I have had for many years and I don't see a cure in sight.

After following your burger reviews for months I've converted to the ketchup-definitely-belongs-on-a-burger camp. As a child I didn't even care for ketchup... on anything but you've completely rocked my burger world, Damon. What I love about this review is that once again you've taken burgers to new gastro-importantical heights by showing us the nuances of what makes a great burger. I'm actually going to stop in to Laurel Tavern and try that burger but thanks to your review I've got myself a road map to ordering it right. I'll order it rare and tell them to 86 the funny stuff that seems to muck it up. Who knows, I may just end up with a decent burger! Thanks again for being my personal BPS (Burger Positioning Satellite).

"Belief" in Global Warming is not unequivocal thankfully. The world as you know it will not be ending anytime soon. It is ginned up fear and paranoia. Polar bear populations are increasing. Lets say you live in NYC where Hamburger Today HQ are......

There was a large meeting of scientists there last year. I'll bet you never heard it because the mass media refused to cover it.

C'mon Gaffer:
In a grim and powerful assessment of the future of the planet, the leading international network of climate scientists has concluded for the first time that global warming is “unequivocal” and that human activity is the main driver, “very likely” causing most of the rise in temperatures since 1950."

Heart of Glass.....
Global warming is hardly settled science. The last ten years have been cooling ones. James Hansen (Al Gore's guru) was way off and perhaps guilty of intentional fraud when he claimed the 10 hottest years of the last 100 have occurred recently. He had to retract because many of those 10 hottest are actually during the Great Depression (1934 in particular) and are in fact well distributed within the last 100 years

From A Hamburger Today

'Hamburgers are the Hummers of Food'

@NotAmerican--well said!

@gaffer--read the science. Global warming is no longer a 'debate' in the scientific community, nor has it been for many, many years. Meat consumption does exponentially increase one's carbon footprint. Like NotAmerican said, it's not like 'they're coming to take the meat away,' but instead of assuming the way people in the developed world for only the past 50 years have been eating meat is 'more natural,' people who eat meat have to return to the ways they ate meat long ago--as a condiment for some meals, in small portions, less frequently, and in a more ethically-raised manner.

From A Hamburger Today

'Hamburgers are the Hummers of Food'

I'm had two delicious homemade sliders today made from organic beef. I grow organic vegetables. But no way do I fall for this global warming fear and paranoia. I have read both sides of the argument and that's where I come down on it

From A Hamburger Today

'Hamburgers are the Hummers of Food'

They're not saying 'Don't eat meat', they're saying 'Maybe we should eat meat in moderation, like we used to'.

Nobody's going to have their burger taken away from them, okay? But do you need meat every day? I love a good burger, but I don't need it for three meals a day. And a bit of salad wouldn't kill you, would it?

I get very tired of the anti-vegetarian meme online. 'Oh, I could eat a whole cow! I want meat cereal in the morning! Put more meat on my ice cream, which is also made of meat!' Okay, we get it, you're a very manly man who does manly things like eat meat. Most vegetarians I know don't give a damn that you want meat. They do think you want a lot of attention.
