The Vegan Experience Day 28: Final Thoughts As a Part-Time Vegan

Congrats! This was a great project to read about and I have definitely enjoyed some of the recipes. I'm thoroughly an omnivore, but I definitely eat vegetarian and even vegan for meals regularly. Glad to see a non-extremist view come out of this experiment. I think that's what turns a lot of people off to such lifestyles.

Lunch in the Loop: Native Foods Cafe

I've been once so far. $11 for a sandwich and sweet potato fries (admittedly, the SP fries were AWESOME) and a 25 minute wait for my take out order means I am not in a hurry to return.

Personally, I'm waiting to run into Dennis Lee while I'm out for lunch one of these days. :-D

I actually think he did much better during his All-Star round than his first time out. I was rooting for him.

The Vegan Experience, Day 5: Say No To Faux

I tend to agree about all the fake meats, but I can't help keep a box of those Morningstar Farm "Sausage" Patties in my freezer to add to a quick breakfast sandwich if I'm in a rush. I love 'em and I'm pretty sure they would survive a nuclear winter.

6 Extreme Canned Beers You Should Know

I haven't tried Hop Slayer but after really detesting all of Wild Onion's beers I've tried I am not inclined to seek it out even with such a glowing review of it. Interesting note on the Gubna. I've recently come to the conclusion that I don't think I enjoy Summit hops precisely because of the garlic/onion aroma and flavor (a recent batch of pale ale I brewed with Summit lead me to this conclusion). This unpleasantness does seem to fade over time though.

Personally, I can't wait until Bell's brings their cans to market. Two Hearted while camping (or at the beach or at summer street festivals)? YES PLEASE!

Basil Brick Oven: Good Pizza in an Unexpected Part of Astoria

Was staying in Astoria on the last night of an NY trip in late Oct / early Nov and was planning to make the trip down to Paulie Gee's in BK before I checked online and noticed it was closed Mondays. Boooo. Settled for Basil since it was blocks from where I was staying in Astoria. Not sure I'd make a specific trip, but if I lived in the hood I would probably stop in regularly.

Chicago Burger Tour with George Motz: Edzo's, M Burger, and Top Notch

I really, really wanted to M Burger to be Chicago's Shake Shack or In N Out, but instead found it extremely disappointing across multiple visits. The burger is decent at best, but not even in the same league as SS or InO. The fries are terrible too. Am I missing something here?

Best Tortillas in Chicago

The yellow corn El Milagro have been my go-to tortillas for years, although lately I've been going with some white corn tortillas although I can't remember the name. I want to say Del Rey, but I believe that's not it either--they come in a loosely folded paper packaging.

Chicago: Roots Handmade Pizza Does the Quad Cities Proud

I was wondering when this place would pop up here. What do you think of the prices, Daniel?

I really, really wanted to like this place due to the lack of decent pizza in my hood. I lived near by, saw it being built and was excited to try it. The crust is pretty good and I enjoyed the sausage despite not being a huge fan of the "crumbled" style, however, I find the value of what you get to be severely lacking. I ordered their "large" which is a 16" pie with sausage and red onion for carry out. My total ended up being $28. Their 12" "garden" pizza is $20 and the taco pizza you lauded starts at $22 for a 12"! Huh? The premium pricing here does not make a whole lot of sense. These are not artisan pies by any stretch.

A Sandwich a Day: Fried Fish Sandwich from Cellars Market in Chicago

Weird. I just sat down at my desk with a turkey club from Cellars and opened SE. Never had the fish sandwich, but I've heard people talk about it. The chopped salad is great too. The turkey club is excellent as well if you're wondering. Real slices of turkey, not deli turkey. Not bad for a basement cafeteria.
