Foods everyone seems to like but you just can't get into....

I love most of the foods mentioned here! I have always been someone who can eat just about anything...until I developed a gluten and dairy intolerance. Boo. So aside from what I cannot eat, I love all foods except:
- lima beans. Not that I WON'T eat them, but they taste bland and pasty to me.
@ Mrs. F - I used to HATE ham growing up. I would smother it with mustard to get over the taste. Then when I became an adult, I realized I just hated cheap bad ham - the honey-baked stuff is alright. Not my favorite, but I'll tolerate it.
- any donut or eclair with chocolate and/or pastry cream. The smell alone of chocolate covered donuts makes me retch. I can pass up most any donut, really, but I do love a sour cream cake donut. This dislike extends to other pastry cream things, like Boston cream pie.
- Tequila.
- bologna and just about any other cheap processed meat. Chopped ham, pressed ham, pickle loaf, olive loaf - gross. I'll eat a hot dog, but only if it's super-premium, no corn syrup or artificial ingredients, snobby foodie hot dog.
- most canned vegetables. I'd eat them if I had to, but aside from canned tomatoes, I'd rather pretend that canned vegetables don't exist. They're usually mushy, bland, and salty. Blech.
But sweet potatoes, olives, runny egg yolks, sushi, shrimp? Bring it on!

Hilariously Wrong Food on Television

@hmw0029 - I totally saw that too on Top Chef! I was screaming at the television - how in the world is it cold and early spring and they have tomatoes? Food faux pas on non-food related shows, okay, I can forgive, but how does Top Chef get it wrong?

Gluten-Free Tuesday: One Bowl Chocolate Cake

Yum! So the very hot water doesn't cook the eggs when mixed? I suppose if it's mixed with milk, the milk is cool, so it should be fine, huh.

Cook the Book: The Gloriously Gluten-Free Cookbook

I've been gluten-free for nearly a year. When I first started, I made a lot of whole, naturally gluten-free dishes. I still swear there's nothing better sometimes than a perfectly roasted whole chicken, with crispy, crackly skin flavored with little more than salt and rosemary. And risotto. Risotto is so heavenly, it makes you feel indulgent, and you don't miss a thing. Now that I've been gluten-free for a while, I've experimented with baking a lot, and trying to make replacements for those long-missed gluteny treats. I also try to make them more healthful. My next challenge? A perfect gluten-free cinnamon raisin bread.

The Mac Snack Wrap, Big Mac in a Tortilla

I'm really not THAT much of a food snob, I'm really not, but I guess I just can't jump on board with the Mac Snack Wrap, or anything at McDonald's, really. They have good fries, but beyond that, it's just sustanance. I'll save myself for a Whataburger!

CannedIce already mentioned it, but I've made one of Rick Bayless's recipes from Mexican Everyday - the Chipotle Pork Tinga Tacos - and let it go for a good 9 hours or so. AMAZING. http://tastyeatsathome.wordpress.com/2009/09/03/chipotle-pork-tinga-tacos/

Also I make a super-easy vegetarian pumpkin and bean chili. Healthy, and all you do is dump and go! http://tastyeatsathome.wordpress.com/2009/09/09/vegetarian-bean-and-pumpkin-chili-plus-a-gluten-free-cheddar-serrano-biscuit/

The Nasty Bits: Calf's Liver with Onions

I love liver and onions (I even posted about it on my blog not that long ago - even if it's not the "popular" thing to post, I still wish to sing its praises!) - and I especially love the idea of the fried sage leaves. It is a million times better cooked on the rarer side. And to tahitian (and anyone else), you sometimes have to visit a high-end grocery with an in-house butcher in order to get good calf's liver. The regular American groceries only sell sad excuses for liver, that I've seen, anyway.

Hated it as a Child - Love it Now

I wasn't a picky eater, but I hated ham as a child. Also disliked steak, beets (because all I'd ever had were canned - yuck), and chocolate glazed donuts. Still can't handle the chocolate glazed donuts, but I've grown to like ham and I love beets. And steak? Well, once I learned how delicious medium-rare can be (at home they were always well done), my opinion changed. I can't eat hardly any processed meats nowadays though - as a kid, we didn't have much money, so lunchmeats were whatever was cheapest - bologna, chopped ham, olive loaf, pickle loaf...blech.

Gluten-Free Tuesday: Teff

I wonder if there's a totally gluten-free recipe for injera out there? There are a few Ethiopian restaurants in my area, but after inquiring at a African grocery about injera, the clerk there assured me that most of those restaurants will use wheat flour as well. Would love to try it at home! Until then, there's teff banana bread! Thanks so much Shauna!

Ed Levine's Serious Diet, Week 82: Peanut Butter Portion Control

Mmmm peanut butter and bacon. Heaven.

I'm a huge peanut butter fan but I can generally control myself beyond 2-3 Tablespoons. I buy natural nowadays, so at least no HFCS. But honestly, the fat in the PB satiates me, I guess. Sugary things such as cookies, however? I have a tough time controlling myself eating those. Congrats on the weight loss!

Grilling: Mexican Roadside Chicken with Green Onions

Ahh, I too love my Mexican Everyday book. In fact, making Smoky Pork Tinga Tacos tonight! Can't wait to get home to the smell of deliciousness in the slow cooker. This chicken looks absolutely amazing. That's it - making this definitely next week!

You truly do get what you pay for

Cheese. Unfortunately, there are two versions of cheese in the house. The cheap stuff (my hubby prefers) and the "good" stuff (I prefer). The only one we agree on is the parmesan.
Veggies - I go out of my way to get fresh produce from the farmers market. So much better that way.
Steaks - I will scrimp, to a degree, on certain cuts of meat. But steak? Has to be grass-fed, free range, organic. YUM.
Eggs - I just can't go back to grocery store eggs, not even the best the store has to offer. I get mine from a local farm that raises happy chickens.

Betty Crocker gluten-free mix?

I have tried the brownies. Not too bad! They have nice chewy edges, which I love, and just enough fudginess in the middle. Don't taste gluten-free!

I have the yellow cake mix and the chocolate chip cookie mix at home, haven't made yet. I've heard good things about them though!

From Serious Eats

Cook the Book: 'What We Eat When We Eat Alone'

Random combinations, such as a spoonful of peanut butter, then a corn tortilla with melted cheese in the middle (a psuedo-quesadilla). A piece of fruit. A yogurt.

If I'm actually preparing myself a meal, the sky's the limit. I will definitely make something I would enjoy but my husband would not...i.e. a vegetable frittata, eggplant, something with lots of tomatoes.
