Tastespotting - what happened?

Ummm, dbcurrie, trademark law says a trademark owner must police rights or lose them. Copyright law says no such thing. Your work can be infringed by a million people, and you will still own your copyright and you can still sue the million and first infringer (though the other infringements might affect your damages or ability to claim wilfull infringement.)

Not that there aren't good reasons for authors to protect their works, and lots of good debate about where lines should be drawn.

Just saying.

Where to eat in Seattle / Lynnwood / Bothell - Washington

Le Pichet in Belltown or its sister, Cafe Presse, on Capitall Hill.

Cafe Zoe in Belltown, my favorite Tom Douglas venue thought it doesn't get the publicity Dahlia gets. Serious Pie is his too, and has yummy pizza but has been so crowded the two times I've been there that the meal was not very enjoyable (Friday night both times, I should get a clue!)

Agua Verde right by the ship canal in the U district is fun.

Second the vote for Macrina for brunch - there is a Belltown venue too.

I am still a fan of that old standby Wild Ginger.

As a local, I always enjoy and benefit from hearing about other locals faves, and I think you all made good suggestions ;-)

Best Find from Trader Joes?

Black Mountain cabernet - best $5.99 wine I've had in a long while!
Medium frozen cooked shrimp
Feta (the one in the yellow and green packet)
Red bell peppers
Ham and gruyere pizza
Edamame
Dark chocolate with hazelnuts
Blood orange soda (mix this 3 to 1 with campari, yum!)
Lavendar shower gel
Organic firm tofu (the non-organic is not good)
Broccolini (can't use regular broccoli in stir fry any more)
Salami with pepper rind

The story is funny and well told. Adam is a bit spoiled, though. Most people can't afford to quit their jobs (Mom and Dad aren't subsidizing them) and so they just suck it up and persevere.

Favorite Trader Joe's items?

Dried mango with chili powder - so sweet and spicy and tender, not leathery. Yum.
Greek yogurt - prefer Fage to the house brand.
Frozen Prig Khing Green Beans (in tamarind sauce); to die for, currently unavailable but I am assured they are looking for a new supplier.
Organic firm tofu is really good; the non-organic firm tofu not so good.
Cheap and yummy red bell peppers; sweet 100 tomatoes; avocados; begged spinach and rocket . . .
Feta cheese - the one in the yellow and green packet, don't get the cheapest kind they have.
Sesame pita - these freeze really well.
Mochi ice cream - not a TJ brand, but cheaper than it is elsewhere, though the selection at TJ can be limited. Green tea flavor is the best.
Frozen chile cheese tamales.
Frozen chicken chili is gooood.
Frozen edamame.

Disappointments:
Their house brand virgin olive oil.

Best Find from Trader Joes?

My pleasure bareneed, especially when it is to bring new people into the TJ's cult. Unfortunately there isn't a store in SC yet. They have locations in Chapel Hill, Charlotte, and Cary in NC, and half a dozen locations in GA. Perhaps a road trip is in order once you get there; you can even use the excuse that you want to compare the 'cue in NC and SC (well beyond the scope of this thread).

@DavidNY - Thank you so much for your information - that is what I love about this site, people are friendly and willing to share their knowledge with others. I will try and find the video and watch it, perhaps I can also "google" it and find out if there is a store in Charleston. I will definitely check it out.

bareneed: There is a recently posted video of a fan-made TJs "commercial" on this site. It sums up the store better than I can, but here is a brief overview. TJs sells mostly private-label products, which are often identical to brand name ones, just with different packaging. They sell them at much lower prices than the branded counterparts, but even when they do carry items you can find elsewhere, they are often significantly cheaper. Their basic "philosophy" is to cut out middle-men as much as they can, and buy directly from manufacturers. Other ways they keep prices low are by having a more limited selection (and smaller stores) than most suburban supermarkets, limiting advertising to radio ads they record themselves, getting rid of products that don't sell well, buying from suppliers in large quantities, etc. etc. While they do sell a lot of organic and healthy food, there is also a ton of snack food and other items that are upscale but definitely off-limits to anyone on a diet (witness the bacon spinach salad containing 50 grams of fat). The stores are done up in a mock-maritime decor, with wood paneling, a ship's bell for signaling the crew, Hawaiian shirts for full-time employees, etc. As you can probably tell, people are fanatical about the place. Aside from the food and prices, there is a fun atmosphere to the stores; I worked there for three years, and constantly had people telling me that it was their favorite place to shop (for anything). The company also treats its employees better than just about anyone else does; IMHO, the only reason it never appears on Fortunes Best Companies to Work For is that it is privately held.

Waah! I have never heard of Trader Joe's - live in Canada - do they use branded products or their own - what is their philosophy? Organic, green? Is there a Trader Joes in Charleston, S.C.? I will be there for two weeks this summer.

Ditto on the gyoza. Sesame-crusted cashews. Marinated tri-tip (almost impossible to find in any other store in New York). Frozen pizzas. Greek yogurt. Frozen raspberries at half the price of any other store. Double-roasted salsa.

kqrbob: The edamame are from Thailand.

oh and the frozen chicken gyoza is great.

Best Find from Trader Joes?

the manhattan store is just too crowded and can't keep the stock on the shelves as quickly as things are purchased. they probably gear it towards nyu students because they are the only people who can go during the middle of the day when its empty. its frustrating, but it is so much cheaper then our neighborhood grocery stores and the quality is much better so my roommate and i go every few weeks to stock up on staples. we love the gingersnaps and all of the cereal is great.

From Talk

i second the pizza dough. if you bring it up to room temp and crank the oven to 500 for about 20 minutes, you can get a damn good pizza out of it. also at $1 i can afford to buy an extra in case i mess one up.

no one's mentioned the frozen chicken taquitos... i cannot walk out of TJs without a package. they are strangely addictive.

Cream-topped whole milk – Never thought I'd see that again!
Naan – my daughter's favorite. Fortunately, our new copy of How to Cook Everything has a recipe! (The nearest Trader Joe's is an hour away from where I now live.) Actually, almost all the TJ breads I've tried have been good.
Double Gloucester cheese. Like cheddar with extra butter. And chives. Mmmm.
Maple syrup – affordable at last!
King Arthur White Whole Wheat Flour – beautiful stuff, but it's about $6/bag at Safeway.
Spelt Farrotto!
Sugar/salt scrubs for getting extra gooky stuff off your hands. My son swears by it.

@DaveFaris and others: You mentioned liking the TJ's harvest grains mix (Israeli couscous, red quinoa, dried chickpeas, etc.) - I've gotten it before, but it never turns out right. When I cook it according to the instructions on the package and the chickpeas are always still hard when the rest of grains, etc. are cooked through. Has anyone else run into this problem?

TJ's brand: Organic mint tea, Organic orange juice, vegetable chips, original beef jerky, frozen brown rice, frozen Thai shrimp dumplings, gyoza dipping sauce, jalapeno stuffed green olives, whole wheat pizza dough, challah bread rolls, garlic naan, orange blossom liquid hand soap, and their french chocolate truffles.

Thanks for taking into account my concerns, both FP daily and gawker are looking good and even though I have asked my hubby if we could take up the void left behind when TS left ('would love to, but seriously, we don't have the time'), I am glad someone is. Just hoping it/they will be close to as good as TS was. :)

The chocolate!! I can't go back to the grainy, cloyingly sweet Hersheys stuff anymore; I can't afford to buy only high-quality imported European brand names, what's a girl to do? TJ's has some of the best store-branded chocolate, most coming from Belgium, for only a bit more than generic American chocolate. :) Mmmmmmmmmmmm!!

From Talk

Tastespotting - what happened?

@fotocuisine Regarding Food Gawker, we are definitely rejecting submissions. The photo quality will continue to increase (to get onto Food Gawker) as the quantity of posts increases.

As far as image resizing is concerned, we are just cropping and not resizing similar to TS. The occasional pixelation that you are seeing is due to a reduction of image quality to 94%. We just upped it to 96%. Since we aren't monetizing the site currently and paying for hosting on our on dime, we need to stay wary of our hosting bandwidth usage. We hope to not reduce image quality in the near future.

Finally, I want to thank everyone who has visited the site. The response has been really positive so far!

From Talk

Tastespotting - what happened?

@fotocusine: thanks for the input... though right now I'm not thinking I'll ever make mine that similar to tastespotting. I wouldn't be able to keep up with it! And I plan on rejected photos that I don't like, too, and maybe getting some dialouge going about what makes a good photo.

About the resizing, I'm going to nix it. Yesterday I thought I'd make all the photos as near to 500 px wide so it looks uniform and clean, but I check the site on a PC today and it looked crappy.

I do like food gawker a lot for its tastespottingness. Great job, Chuck!

2 things about these tastespotting copies:

okey, I love that all these tastespotting copies are coming up but,

1. i liked that they rejected stuff, and i know it ticked people off, and would leave me scratching my head as to why some stuff was up and some wouldn't (they rejected two of mine that kinda made me rethink some stuff) but i LIKED that. and i think that is what needed in a replacement.

2. Tastespotting either requested a 250x250 pixel photo or they would cut 250x250 out of your picture, they didn't resize.
these posted links above seem to be resizing or shrinking to fit in an area that they don't fit, therefor the pictures are pixalated (spell?) and look bad.

Tastespotting - what happened?

I spent the weekend making my own tastespotting replacement since my wife and I pretty much can't live without it. I'm trying to expand upon the idea and have already added a few new features that tastespotting never had, like voting, comments and the ability to save your favorite posts. Hopefully it will get us through this dark time without tastespotting.

If anyone has any ideas or features that they would have liked to have seen on tastespotting, please drop me a line and let me know.

Tastespotting - what happened?

I SO miss Tastespotting. Although since it's departure, I have found myself eating less in the afternoon.

Wouldn't it be cool if there were a site just like our dearly departed Tastespotting, with the all the food porn pictures that linked back to blogs, AND had a handy search function.

From Talk

Tastespotting - what happened?

We created a site similar to Tastespotting: www.recipemuncher.com

We did not want to create a copycat, so it's a bit different: instead of submiting pictures one by one you submit your blog and we automatically pull the pictures every time there is a new post.

The site is only 2 days old, but we'll work hard to make it a nice place to hang out ;)
