Spice Hunting: What's The Deal With Saffron?

How long does it keep? I bought a little package in Fairway (I think) for my first foray into risotto-making last spring. Didn't know how much to use, but kept adding it until I saw a nice buttery color. When you make a cream sauce with it (sounds delicious) when do you add the saffron to the sauce?

How America Ate: Horn and Hardart's Automats

Ah, thanks for the memories! My mother loved the Automat and passed that love on to me. When she would come for a visit we would inevitably have lunch there. Can we talk about Schrafft's too (yes to the cream cheese and date-nut bread), Chock Full O'Nuts (their breakfast sandwiches - yum!) banana splits at Woolworth's, then let's cruise on over to Lamston's... check out Gimbels, then B. Altman's....

Sigh.

Taste Test: Root Beer

Haven't tried them all but there is NO WAY Barq's is the best! Yech. Ditto to Boylan's which is also "no way" better than IBC. It, as well as A&W, tastes like chemical plant effluent. Mug is not better than IBC either.

Shake Shack Coming to Washington, DC in 2011

kurteye, Had my first Shake Shack burger last Friday after waiting in what was a fairly short line at the new Theater District location.

After hearing raves for months and months and months and reading glowing reviews I was really charged. What a disappointment! Burger was okay and certainly not great, a sloppy mess (not assembled well) and they got my order wrong to boot!

Verdict: Meh, b.f.d. and not worth the wait.

NYC Pizza Culture: What to Expect

Child of native New Yorkers, the first time I ever saw someone eating pizza with a knife and fork, I thought it was odd and laughable.

Even when we got takeout and ate it at home, pizza was a fold and eat food. Even the hot (pointy) end. You learned to fold that in so you wouldn't scorch the roof of your mouth!

Anchovies, anchovy paste, champagne vinegar, shallots, cumin, Maille cornichons, cognac, imported butter.

Cook the Book: 'The Boozy Baker'

I put a tablespoon or so of cognac in my lobster bisque along with some cumin and freshly-ground black pepper. It really gives some depth of flavor to the soup. Likewise I put bourbon in the crab bisque along with some chopped chives...is there a pattern here? hic!
