What desserts should i make a for a bar mitvah??
having grown up in a very very jewish suburb (meaning i had to actually turn down bar/bat mitzvah invitations because there were multiple ones every weekend), you could really take it any way you want. i think cookies are a great idea as well as some fun brownies. on the traditional side, there are things like rugelach, mandelbread, coffee cake. i've seen little doughnuts as well as cheesecake too...but honestly, one bar mitzvah i went to was absolutely awesome because it had a chocolate fountain. really really fun for kids and adults, you can get stuff like marshmallows, fruit, cakes to dip in it.
Making your granola a cluster event
what exactly are you putting in your granola?
Who Should Pay at a Birthday Dinner?
i just went out last night to a birthday dinner and even though it was one check (About 415), we all paid for our respective dishes/drinks. half of us didn't order desserts and i only got about two drinks, so there was no way we were going to pay for things ordered that we didn't want.
I DO agree with the poster way above me though that talked about how if we all agree on what is ordered (more family style), i have no problems with splitting the bill

I'll Eat It, But I'm Not a Huge Fan of _________
chinese food.
the american kind that is, i'd really like to try some authentic stuff but have not had the chance yet
You either love it or you hate it...
i'll respond to what was originally posted, i like those ideas:
Liver: love it, but the only way i've only had it in my 20 years of life is chopped w/ some hard boiled egg
Licorice: disgusting imo
Anchovies (especially on pizza) and sardines: delicious, even in caesar salad dressing
Cilantro: love love love
Garlic and onions: great combo
Pistachio ice cream (I'm thinking of brooke, here!): i'll say love it but only the really good kind...i enjoy ciao gelato's version
My big aversion--coconut!: ew, especially in macaroons
Cincinnati chili or chili with/without beans: NEVER had this...but i do like chili?
Chicago deep dish pizza: love it (Says the chicagoan)
Spam (those from Hawaii and those not from Hawaii): nope, won't do it
Very sugary candies (gummi bears, Sweet Tarts, etc): i'm a chocolate person, never liked this stuff even as a kid. i especially hate/hated sour patch kids
Obligated to eat dessert?
i don't ever feel obligated, but when i do go out to eat with my family it becomes very frustrating because they all seem to PUSH food onto others. usually i don't eat dessert unless it's something i REALLY love (e.g. something with bananas or peanut butter) but even if its something as stupid as a cookie i am glared at with a weird look and subsequently teased. sometimes i think they do that to rationalize that they are eating dessert (many are overweight) and maybe aren't even hungry but still want it
Help!! Chicago Recommendations
check out chowhound online, specifically for the chicago area. awesome site for recs
Favorite Fage mix-in?

Ask Aida?? NFNS idea?
shows like that have to go into pre-production, possibly even six months before they start advertising like that. they did not steal adam's idea
Love to eat but hate eating out because of fat!!!
i really only go as far as subbing in salads or just veggies for sides and having dressing on the side. otherwise, i just eat a smaller portion of the protein :)
The versatile tortilla
i like to make thin crust pizzas too when i don't want all the doughy bread, just some sauce, cheese, chicken or some kind of protein
Would you rather give up bacon or french fries?
french fries...bacon isn't horrible in moderation, and even turkey bacon is good in my opinion. ALTHOUGH, if they were sweet potato fries, i'd give up the bacon :)
My Favorite Bagel Ever is.....
hillary, i've got to go try those out in deerfield...i can't believe i've never heard of it, i live right next to deerfield
My Favorite Bagel Ever is.....
i'm not from NY but my dad lives there...when he was on the upper west side i loved the H & H bagels and now he's down near WTC area and i love Zucker's
Where to eat near Michigan Ave, Chicago?
don't mind seeing the home team lose? are you aware of how well the cubs are doing this year? lol
Is it Rude to Eat on Mass Transit?
i've most definitely brought food to eat on the plane, but that's because i refuse to eat the overpriced junk food they have in airports or on the planes
Snack ideas for people who travel
i love beef jerky (the natural kind, without all the preservatives and sodium) as a quick protein source. any type of nut butter and whole wheat bread will keep you full as well.
Skippy or Jif? (Thanks Bessfour!)
we always had that honey nut skippy because my older sister liked it. i actually prefer natural pb or almond butter

America's Regional Hot Dog Styles
chicago dogs all the way :)
Ground Turkey
ps make sure tho if it's ground turkey breast you will want to add a little fat like some eggs so it doesn't fall apart
How was your school's hot lunch?
@tvilov, perhaps you would be better off not knowing.
How was your school's hot lunch?
I attended Oakland High School in Oakland California in the late '50's. The lunches in the school cafateria were not really that bad. In particular I liked the hamburgers, they had a very distinct taste, a taste that I have not found in any hamburger I have eaten since. Something was added to the hamburger meat during preparation to give it the distinct taste, I suspect that it was a condiment but to this day I have been unable to recreate the taste. I have been looking for information on a cookbook that the Alameda County public schools may have been using at the time, perhaps it would have the recipe for the hamburgers.
America's Regional Hot Dog Styles
I have eaten Hot dogs on 5 continents and almost 1/2 of America, probably about 150 cities in my travels. I would have to say none so far even compare to Rhode Island's, their "Hot Weiner" all the way are the best! They are small mild hot dogs served on a steamed bun with some kind of meat sauce, mustard, onions and celery salt! Addictive...I eat about 6 when I go to RI.
In Rhode Island they also sold hot dogs in the raw at the market under the brand "Saugy's" and these were the best I have ever bought, very mild, made with veal, pork and beef with a snap from the natural casing. I have a friend who ships them to me in Florida. You can also buy the New York System's Weenie Meat Sauce online at www.olneyvillenysystem.com and make them at home. It is easy to make and tastes like the real thing, I use the Saugy's brand with this meat sauce and I think it might even be better! You make them in this order..place dog in fresh steamed bun, a generous amount of plain yellow mustard, then top with a heaping pile of the meat sauce, then top that with the finely diced onions and shake some celery salt on top. Do not forget the celery salt on top..it's important. You'll Love it!
America's Regional Hot Dog Styles
I was in the Poconos for Race Week and stopped at a Street Cart on Rt 940. They advertised "The World's Largest Chili Dog" ......and it was!
This thing had to weigh a Half pound! The Chili Sauce was execellent and the Price was Very Fair. My 3 boys and I chowed down on The worlds Largest Chili Dogs and washed them down with Yoo Hoo bost me 15 bucks I was full all the way home. I think the Name was simply Pocono Hot Dog.........
America's Regional Hot Dog Styles
I like the half smokes or, more often than note, a standard 7-11 Big Bite with lots of chili, cheese, and their onion relish.
America's Regional Hot Dog Styles
Bacon-wrapped and grilled on Mission St. in San Francisco, with mustard and onions. I plan to eat one when I visit next week.
America's Regional Hot Dog Styles
The CHICAGOOOO dog allll the way. There's nothing like the taste of those cool crisp veggy veggie flavors mixing in with warm hotdog juice with each bite. Hot and cold. crisp and soft. The chicago dog is the perfect balance.
America's Regional Hot Dog Styles
Definitely Columbian, if only for the novelty value.
America's Regional Hot Dog Styles
wow. That's a LOT of hot dogs. Way more types than I've ever tried, which makes me feel foolish to pick one.
But having said all that, I just got back from a trip to Chicago, and they were delicious. Combination of steamed hot dog and vegetable toppings make it a perfect snack, imho.
America's Regional Hot Dog Styles
We have a House in the Poconos. Every Summer we look forward to going to the Pocono Lake Flea Market to browse the antiques and get
"The World's Largest Chili Dog" from the Vendor who has a cart there.
Those Dogs Have to be a 1/2 Pound and the Chili Sauce is extraordinary. He has to serve it on a Hoagie Bun it is so huge.....Can't wait for Summer
America's Regional Hot Dog Styles
It doesn't matter what it's a covered in..if you start with a bad Wiener..it won't taste good! Hartmann's Beef Wieners (NY) are my favorite.. all beef, smoked, natural casing!! Tons of smoke flavor and not too garlicy...the best!
America's Regional Hot Dog Styles
The best hot dogs, bar none, can be found at Wasses Wagon in the heart of lobstah country ... Rockland, Maine. The secret is the peanut oil they're fried in. Can't eat just one, ya betcha.
America's Regional Hot Dog Styles
Hmmmm.....the photo of those Coney's looks exactly like the chili cheese dog from Real Chili here in Milwaukee. Is it? (You haven't lived until you've had one.) Too bad I don't live within walking distance of Real Chili anymore...
Who Should Pay at a Birthday Dinner?
Yes, I just went in and read further down on the "backstory" and it says the $3,000 was added as an April Fool's prank. So given that, the rest of the ticket looks reasonable.
America's Regional Hot Dog Styles
Hey! All right Raachester gettin the nod it deserves! I miss those white hots ans especially the natural casings. I still remember that at the old Silver Stadium too. Thanks for mentioning my old home town.
Jk
Seattle, not much for hots dogs here
America's Regional Hot Dog Styles
Some look good some are too much but Basically I agree with sommelier I prefer a quality all meat hot dog w/ caseing grilled, a fresh soft lightly toasted bun with a schmear of French's yellow mustard that's it my favorite. but from time to time I'll have a speciality dog as some shown.
I live in Socal and I'm sure Pink's is a good dog but it's a 100+ miles north of me through traffic from hell. COSTCO has a hot dog or Polish dog w/ serve mustard(2 types), ketsup, onions, relish and a soda for a buck fitty and IKEA has a smaller hot dog all meat and tastey for only fitty cents no soda they only offer mustard and ketsup.
I guess the BH and I will have to go on an extended road trip and EAT our way across the U.S. and back. I've eatten exotic foods all around the world now it's time to eat at home from Luger's steak house in NY to Crazee burger in San Diego, Ivar's Acres of Clams in Seattle to some dive in Key West.
America's Regional Hot Dog Styles
Love hot dogs of most any ilk. Just wanted to add that Pink's in L.A. serves a good dog, but the best part of a visit to Pink's is the people watching there. The full spectrum and many movie people adore Pink's, so you never know who you'll see there. A must see joint when you visit us here in Socal.
America's Regional Hot Dog Styles
I noticed a couple of mentions of a hot dog joint in this thread called NuWay, I guess in Georgia. I've been chasing my original chili dog buzz for about 50 years trying to find one as good as I remember the ones I had as a kid at a spot also called NuWay in the West LA area. Does anyone know if the long defunct NuWay in LA is related to/same as the one in Georgia/ If so, I'm buying a plane ticket, I swear!

ALL HAIL THE SUPER DUPER WEENIE!
America's Regional Hot Dog Styles
I guess I was too busy selling Flint-style coneys to mention them when this post was posted. ;-)
Would you rather give up bacon or french fries?
Bacon is harder by far to give up. Fries do not tempt me. Now tater tots on the other hand I cannot resist. Rather have a tot than a fry any day.
Snickers or Milky Way?
Snickers, frozen or room temp. Also Hershey's Kisses w/ Almonds...... YUM!!!!!!
Snickers or Milky Way?
I prefer Snickers to Milky Way. When I was little, I loved the Three Musketeers bar, mostly because I'd confused Musketeers with Mouseketeers.
Now, I think my favorite mass-market candy bar is Almond Joy. Either that or the Chunky.
Snickers or Milky Way?
Snickers with almonds (I don't like peanuts in candy bars except for the Chunky Bar). Otherwise Milky Way. Three Musketeers is usually a bit bland for me, though the mint version is yummy.
