OMG, that was so me as a kid. I was not allowed stuff like Twinkies, sugar cereals, etc. Only candy for Halloween, Christmas and Easter. I tried to get as much as I could from my childhood best friend who got all the good stuff - but guess what she wanted to eat all the time? Fruit. ugh.

I think that most people who hate mayo is because they've only had like Miracle Whip (which is NOT mayo, just some fake stuff saying it is) or some other cheap mayo. I mean have you had aoili, especially the garlic kind? That is the stuff of heaven.

Served: Why Tipping Makes Everyone Uncomfortable

I just hate how America has become a based-on-tips country. I just want us to go back in time and eliminate the whole idea of tipping in the first place and just pay the servers a decent wage.

I always tip, even if the service is bad and I will tip more if it was great. I know about the dependency on it for the servers.

However I feel this country has blown tipping out of proportion. People putting tip jars every chance they get. I have to tip the hairdresser, the taxi driver, the bellhop, and I'm sure I am forgetting many others. And sometimes the argument is why should I tip you for something that is already your job? I feel differently about those who work in restaurants because they are doing something much more to accommodate a diner and bring them what they need. Whenever I travel to a foreign country its more stressful because it is done differently anywhere but what if they expect it now, and what I read about the customs there is out of date?

It just has become so overwhelming that I sometimes feel like I've been scammed or walked on because I feel guilty not giving something. And then it builds up and becomes this stressful thing to figure out "should I tip this person? how much? Why didn't they bring the itemized receipt back so I could see what the tax was? Was it really worth is much?" It just becomes a stressful event and people probably get fed up.

But I will never stop tipping in this country, until some magic law passes giving everyone decent money and saying you don't have to tip anymore! But even then people will probably still expect tips.

And you can probably tell I think too much...

Our Own Robyn Lee on 'No Reservations'

YESSSS thank goodness he said good things about Buffalo. I love my city but I was a little worried about what he was seeing and where he was eating and his reaction (not that I should care but we are the butt of so many jokes, we don't need anymore). Didn't get a chance to catch him in the action, though I tried. They filmed here about 3-4 weeks ago... Anyways, haven't seen the "Food Porn" program yet but yeah I agree he should have spoken with someone from Serious Eats!

New Year's Champagne Cocktail: The Kir Royale du Bois

I totally agree - I LOVE Kir Royale. After my father introduced me to this drink several years ago on Christmas I've put it on my shelf of only those really special occasion drinks but maybe my new year's resolution should be to drink Kir Royale anytime (not all the time of course)! I would love to try your version someday!

Jonas Trampedach's Tea Bag Coffin

I totally need this!!! I hate having to use my saucer to hold the bag and not able to put down the cup on it because of the water that flows out of the bag all over the saucer. Maybe the designer is American or some other country but going to RAC.

Served: Why Tipping Makes Everyone Uncomfortable

So I didn't see the last post, and I haven't read all the comments, but it's a topic that depends on the situation, imo. If it was a large group of people, I would ask again, because that does eat up a lot of one waitress's time. I dined at a nice little place with a friend a few months back, and it was my second time there (pretty sure the waiters recognized me). I had tipped well the first time, as it was a great experience, and the second time, my friend and I completely miscalculated the tip. My waiter came back around and asked us if everything was ok. It was a bit awkward, but I'm glad he did ask, because he deserved more than the $3 we had somehow managed to leave.

From Serious Eats

Served: Why Tipping Makes Everyone Uncomfortable

I think the whole idea of tipping is ridiculous: do you tip the toll collector for taking your money? Do you tip the gas man for reading your meter? Do you tip your IT guy for fixing your computer? Of course not. Now, obviously, they don't live on tips. GUESS WHAT: NEITHER SHOULD WAITERS! How insane is it that a customer has to pay basically twice: for the food and for the service? Can you imagine if we had to tip UPS person for delivering the package to your house? Here's another tidbit: are the dishes heavier at T.G.I. Fridays than they are in a fancy steakhouse with $100+ dishes? Where do you come off with a sense of entitlement to a $20 tip just because the food was $100, whereas at Fridays a $20 plate would only get a $4 tip? If restaurant you work at charges that much for food, let them pay you! Enough is enough!

@sweetdiesel - haha me too! I always wanted chocolate pudding in those little plastic cups...never allowed. Twinkies? Never heard of them til I was like--19. I couldn't even have fruit rollups! My mom was like: Here's some strawberries.

Mindyou, I'm greatful though. I have great eating habits as an adult.

I love that the last segment depicts the little bastard wearing a bart simpson shirt. so hilarious.

From Serious Eats

Served: Why Tipping Makes Everyone Uncomfortable

Tip is left for service which means full-service, as opposed to self-service, right? Even if the server is not what you want or expect, if he/she walked back and forth so you can just sit at your table, shouldn't the server get the minimum 15% unless there are mistakes on the server's part (not the kitchen's)? We expect so much from servers at restaurants, yet accept lousy service everywhere else.

I made this yesterday for a work potluck lunch, and it was a big hit! I used leftover rotisserie chicken and subbed lemon juice for the lime juice based on personal preference and parsley and basil for the cilantro. Great combination of flavors. This would also be great for a picnic.

I too love Miracle Whip!! As a kid we used to make bologna and Miracle Whip sandwiches. A friends little brother used to fix Miracle Whip and pepper sandwiches. Mayo, either store bought or homemade, does have a 'greasy' taste to it. Miracle Whip forever!!!

Spread some on a Saltine cracker, sprinkle fresh ground pepper over it....delicious. Seriously, it took me forever to appreciate mayo and still find it "greasy" tasting. Miracle Whip is a gift from the gods. :) Bob

@ rjm1604... that's what I thought too, especially when i saw how small the chicken thighs were that the butchers gave me. that's why i also added a small chicken breast along with the regular listed amounts of ingredients. i wrapped the mixture in tortillas and was able to make 4 out of them. surprising, but true. also, i would say just make it with chicken breasts anyways.

Ohhh, I also threw some cholula in there to give it a little kick!

I made this for dinner last night, but instead of cutting up the chicken and mixing it in with the avocado/tomato mixture, I just let the chicken cool a bit and then put it on top. It was so delicious. My fiance and I have been trying to cook a lot more with avocados, and this is definitely going in our regular use repertoire! Thanks!

I hated mayo until a few years ago. I think that was because all I had had was the kind you buy in a jar at the store. I love homemade mayo now! with french fries anyone? I also love miracle whip. I venture to say it's not even trying to be a fake mayo. It is a different taste all together and I love it.

Um....@sticky wicket...."miracle whip doesn't need refrigeration"...?
I'll have to check my jar at home...but I think you're wrong on that one...

And I have to say it...I love mayo AND Miracle Whip...they both have their uses...I grew up on Kraft Mayo (I think they changed the recipe or something)...briefly tried Hellmans (really TRIED to like it) and now am a Dukes fan all the way.

I really don't understand why people who like mayo (or Miracle Whip, although there is no difference in my mind since they are both disgusting) try to convince me that I should try it again because I might like it. Seriously, I have enough vices in my life that I do not need to add this fatty condiment to it. I'm quite content to live my life free of mayo-laden chicken, tuna and potato salad and will really survive if I never eat garlic aoili.

Thanks for the recipe... I will try it!

Hellmann's is OK, but if given the choice I like Cain's (found in NY state, at least it used to be) and Duke's (found in more southerly regions) because of the vinegar tang those both have. Lately though, it's been Trader Joe's Wasabi mayo for me.

Nice recipe!
