From Behind the Bar: On Tipping

@s2kreno one reason your FIL might be tipping so lightly is that the tipping culture has changed fairly quickly. 30 years ago 10% was a standard amount, then it crept up to 15% in the late 80s, then in the 90s it was 15-20%. And now we're talking 20-25%, and @Rinsewind says he sometimes tips 30%. So I wouldn't be surprised to hear in another 20 yrs when I'm taking my adult kids out to dinner that they think I'm cheap for not tipping 50%.

Bobby Flay Challenges The Pioneer Woman to a Thanksgiving Throwdown

Sounds interesting as I do like her and her blog. But the whole concept of the "Throwdown" is a little lost on me. So he goes around challenging cooks who are "absolute masters in different kinds of cooking" (according to Food Network). But what's the point? If he loses, it just seems like a set-up so what was the point of the challenge in the first place? If he wins, it's a disaster for the other cook as they are proven to NOT be masters after all. And these are often times very small businesses, I would imagine that he's not out to ruin someone's business, right?

Cookout Etiquette

well, i don't have much more to add except it's obvious that expectations vary. and as someone said previously as long as those expectations are communicated then you can make the choice to participate or not. but one thing i have noticed having lived all over the country is that there are regional differences. having grown up in the midwest, i just expected to always bring something to a party. while on the east coast i don't think i ever attended a potluck, even when in college. the only thing we brought was booze! the point is there isn't a "normal" way to host a party, just what you and your friends are comfortable with! and have fun, that's what get-togethers are for!!
