Yeah, why blame Gore?

Burgers are the hummers of food, sure, but harder to resist than a Hummer, IMHO. Beefalo is a decent substitute but the same problem, I fear. Ostrich burgers?

Anyone Going Out for NYC Restaurant Week?

I went to Nobu Next Door and Eleven Madison Park. I wasn't happy with Nobu Next Door. Eleven Madison Park was great. I agree Danny Meyer restaurants are the best choice. I was supposed to go to Cafe Boulud today but my son's school was cancelled and I couldn't get in. My sister went with a friend and said it was delicious but skimpy portions.

Mayonnaise Is Second Most Popular 'Treat' For American Dieters

Homemade mayo is heaven. Hellman's is just a habitual staple. I have no problem giving it up b/c there are some decent fat-free versions out there but I can sympathize with those who consider it a treat. Doesn't Wylie Dufresne have a fried version? Obviously he wouldn't bother if there were no mayonnaise fans out there.

Daddy-O in the West Village Falls Short of Bar Food Greatness

Did anyone get a rare burger? Sometimes a restaurant makes a decision not to serve rare burgers because of health concerns. Not to be a bummer but 90% of our meat supposedly contains e.coli. You should've asked the waiter or sent it back. If it's a policy not to serve a medium rare burger, they should tell you. You'd be surprised how many establishments won't serve medium rare burgers these days!

I have been to Babbo for birthdays, Daniel and Cafe Boulud. You might be able to get into Cafe Boulud or ask for cancellations. I don't know the restaurants you mentioned, but tell us which cuisine you enjoy, that would help. Red Cat is supposed to be good too, and Oceana just got an excellent review in the Times, it is a neglected, delicious restaurant, so you might have luck there. Also Aquagrill is great too, if you enjoy seafood.

Regarding "cupcake craze"....we have two cupcake bakeries here in Princeton, House of Cupcakes and Sugar and Sunshine. Don't think it's a national phenomenon, but it's a nice local trend, I guess! I was recently in Boston, didn't see any cupcakes but they sure have great muffins.

Is Mario Batali ever at Babbo anymore?

I've been to Babbo a bunch of times and haven't seen him. I guess it's not an issue unless the calibre of the food drops and so far I haven't had a bad meal there. But the man does seem to be spreading himself rather thin, no offense meant.

Is Locavorism Practical Where You Live? Freaknomics States the Obvious

I'm with you, Ed...sure one can get on their high horse that it's not practical, but the basic fact is No Farms, No Food. Unless we want all our food to be flown in from who knows where and grown who knows how, we need to be supporting our local organic farms and farmers by buying their produce. An organic farm share is the way to go if you're lucky enough to live in an area with such a farm, if not then buying from a green market.

Foods We Loved as Kids, Maybe Not as Adults

Foods We Loved as Kids, Maybe Not as Adults

I would have to say Koolaid and Tang, the drink of the astronauts. I used to drink it as my morning juice, believe it or not. Also those Hostess Snowballs, or whatever they are called, cream-filled devil food cake surrounded by marshmellow, dyed pink and covered with coconut. I still see them in the store, and they give me the willies.

I could tolerate the occasional devil dog or hostess cupcake (sometimes enjoy the NYC gourmet cupcake version) but those snowballs were definitely too extreme. ICK. I even once ate ones that were colored lime green. Shudder. It's almost like that Ray Bradbury short story about the horrors of childhood.

On Banning Photography from Restaurants

I just got back from Corton. The website asks guests to refrain from using flash photography and cell phones. I accept that gladly. You quote Drew here as saying,

"No, we're not going to stop people from taking photos," Nieporent said. "We'd just like people to be considerate of the other people in the restaurant.""

So why, when I entered, was I told that no photography was permitted. I asked nicely and was told, "no". The host asked the chef and reiterated that it was not permissible. I explained that I would not use a flash. I explained that I would not use the photos online nor for any commercial purposes. Still, my request was refused. I feel lied to based on the website only saying that "flash photography" was not permitted and also the quote here from Drew. So Drew, why is this?

The food at Corton was good but, just like Momofuku Ko, I won't be back. I see no reason to reward restaurants who don't consider my desire for a permanent memory, valid. They can make any policies they like but I still get to chose where I dine. I also chose to deal with people who advertise honestly. Drew said that, "we're not going to stop people" but that is just what they did. That to me is deceptive.

In the interest of full disclosure, the host did comp a round of drinks for us because of this. Still, it, (please, please, pardon the pun, leaves a bad taste in my mouth.

On Banning Photography from Restaurants

I feel shy about taking pictures of food (I don't know why, but I feel like some sort of freak, the only person on the planet to do this, which is obviously nonsense), and only do so occasionally, but as long as other patrons are being strictly omitted from the images, and a flash isn't used, I don't think this is a problem. True, food is meant to be eaten, but sometimes it is also so impressive visually, I want to show a few friends, and I'll take a shot. I usually only move myself or the dish I'm shooting in order to ensure that other diners aren't in the shot. As long taking a picture or two is a brief, low-key incident, it seems fine.

It seems strange that any restaurant would ban even the taking of photos of the diners at one's own table, as this has been a longstanding tradition, and I can remember seeing this done even when I was a small child (in excellent restaurants), by people celebrating some special event; the waiter was often included in the shot. And let's not forget all those photos of dinners at all classes of restaurants that go back as far as the existence of the SLR camera, at least

On the other hand, use of the terms 'food porn' and 'foodie' should be punishable by law ;)

"Belief" in Global Warming is not unequivocal thankfully. The world as you know it will not be ending anytime soon. It is ginned up fear and paranoia. Polar bear populations are increasing. Lets say you live in NYC where Hamburger Today HQ are......

There was a large meeting of scientists there last year. I'll bet you never heard it because the mass media refused to cover it.

C'mon Gaffer:
In a grim and powerful assessment of the future of the planet, the leading international network of climate scientists has concluded for the first time that global warming is “unequivocal” and that human activity is the main driver, “very likely” causing most of the rise in temperatures since 1950."

Heart of Glass.....
Global warming is hardly settled science. The last ten years have been cooling ones. James Hansen (Al Gore's guru) was way off and perhaps guilty of intentional fraud when he claimed the 10 hottest years of the last 100 have occurred recently. He had to retract because many of those 10 hottest are actually during the Great Depression (1934 in particular) and are in fact well distributed within the last 100 years

From A Hamburger Today

'Hamburgers are the Hummers of Food'

@NotAmerican--well said!

@gaffer--read the science. Global warming is no longer a 'debate' in the scientific community, nor has it been for many, many years. Meat consumption does exponentially increase one's carbon footprint. Like NotAmerican said, it's not like 'they're coming to take the meat away,' but instead of assuming the way people in the developed world for only the past 50 years have been eating meat is 'more natural,' people who eat meat have to return to the ways they ate meat long ago--as a condiment for some meals, in small portions, less frequently, and in a more ethically-raised manner.

From A Hamburger Today

'Hamburgers are the Hummers of Food'

I'm had two delicious homemade sliders today made from organic beef. I grow organic vegetables. But no way do I fall for this global warming fear and paranoia. I have read both sides of the argument and that's where I come down on it

From A Hamburger Today

'Hamburgers are the Hummers of Food'

They're not saying 'Don't eat meat', they're saying 'Maybe we should eat meat in moderation, like we used to'.

Nobody's going to have their burger taken away from them, okay? But do you need meat every day? I love a good burger, but I don't need it for three meals a day. And a bit of salad wouldn't kill you, would it?

I get very tired of the anti-vegetarian meme online. 'Oh, I could eat a whole cow! I want meat cereal in the morning! Put more meat on my ice cream, which is also made of meat!' Okay, we get it, you're a very manly man who does manly things like eat meat. Most vegetarians I know don't give a damn that you want meat. They do think you want a lot of attention.

My guilty pleasure for 50 years: Mayonnaise sandwich. Just Hellman's slathered on a good bread or roll - if the bread is crunchy (toasted enflish muffin works for this, there's a nice contrast to the lovely unctuous mouth feel of the mayo. In the summer, I'll give in and add a slice or two of garden fresh tomato.
