Weekend Cook and Tell Round Up: Thanksgiving Leftover Derby

I had second thanksgiving on Saturday - that's when I cook my free turkey. I frozen leftover meat & gravy, and last night had turkey and gravy over homemade waffles, with a side of cranberry sauce. It was my SO's favorite leftover meal, never had it before, but I will be making it next year!

They were also sold in Maryland - I bought a box at a grocery in Ocean City. My husband loves them, I didn't bother trying it, too sweet for me!

Are You an Oyster Stuffing Fan?

Oyster dressing is my favorite part of thanksgiving. My mother always made it, and when I was doing thanksgiving it was always served. Unfortunately, my current family doesn't care for it, so it has fallen by the wayside :-((((

Whatever I saw that looked good to me on a cooking site during the week! That's usually my experiment time. One of my fav's so far is polenta with shrimp.

Summer BBQ - How to deal with something tactfully

Wow - how hard is it to make a box of brownie mix? It took you more time to post on this board & read the responses than it would have just to run to the corner for the boxed mix. Who doesn't have cinnamon in their house, unless they just ran out? Or if you are just not a cook at all and can't follow the simple instructions, buy brownies pre-made & throw them on a plate. Quit whining - she was nice enough to invite you, and assumed it would not be a horrible burden to make & bring such a simple thing. I feel bad for the hostess, and think you are really over-reacting.

Cook the Book: 'Endangered Recipes' by Lari Robling

My grandma taught me how to make her chicken and dumplings. It is still one of my favorite comfort foods - and one my mom can't even make! Since then I have run into this recipe under other names, including slippery noodles and Pennsylvania chicken & noodles.

Cook the Book: Eugenia Bone's 'Well-Preserved'

Pepper jelly. I made pepper jelly several years ago, and we loved it but the recipe I used was too vinegary in my opinion. I want to try again this year with the serrano peppers in my garden, and get a sweet/tart but not puckery flavor that balances the heat well.

Your Oldest Cookbook?

The oldest cookbook I own is from the 1700's. I collect old cookbooks and housewives manuals and love to look through the junk books pile at tag sales in search of new ones.
