Seriously Asian: Burmese Chicken-Coconut Soup
Used rice noodles since I'm gluten free and it worked out really well. Even my husband who doesn't really like soups for dinner ate 2 bowls worth. Going to clean up now. Thanks!

Mixed Review: Bob's Red Mill Gluten-Free Vanilla Cake Mix
I get a little upset when people say that we, without celiacs, are turning gluten free diets into a fad. Both my mother and I have had horrible sinus infections for years - antibiotics, steroids, so many different types of meds. Then we both went off of gluten for a month... I love bread and cookies and pasta, etc but without them all of the sinus infections are gone and when I eat something with it (sometimes that doughnut just calls to me) they come back with a vengeance. I have had multiple food allergy tests due to another digestive disorder, and doesn't show an allergy, but the allergist says that the exclusion diet shows that I have one. So if it makes you feel better, do it, and have an extra gluten free cookie!

Gluten-Free Tuesday: If It Doesn't Have Gluten in It, I'm Eating It
Thank you for starting this weekly post. Gluten free living can be difficult, especially if you are a young foodie and loved baking, but it can be done!
Cook the Book: Easy Gluten-Free Baking
Being gluten free I think Mochi and Mochi cake are right now my favorites!
Leftovers: The Day's Stray Links
Anyone have a way from keeping people from taking items from school gardens in an urban neighborhood? My special needs students work very hard in growing vegetables...planting, weeding, even composting their lunch scraps outside and in class worm boxes and everytime the vegetables get close to being ripe people take them-even the herbs! Fences and signs don't work, any ideas?
Cook the Book: 'Canal House Cooking, Vol. 1'
Grilled lemon chicken with corn
Cook the Book: 'Mrs. Rowe's Little Book of Southern Pies'
So far my best have been making gluten free cookies and cakes from recipes but I'm preparing for the worst when I begin experimenting in turning regular recipes into gluten free. Cakes as hard as bricks anyone??!
Dinner Tonight: Pasta with Chickpea Tomato Sauce
This is hilarious. I just made this last night, but with a recipe from the Moosewood Cookbook. There is no chicken broth (because it is vegetarian) and instead of basil you use rosemary. I think it turned out much yummier!
How to Make Moffles, Mochi + Waffles
Hey does anyone know where I can find different recipes for mochi? Love it but tired of making chocolate mochi from side of rice box.
Reconsidering Ed's Potsticker House in Chicago
Don't go there for pot stickers. I love pot stickers and have been eating them since I had teeth and when I saw this place in timeout Chicago I was excited. Went there. It sucked. Would never go there again.
Birds Stealing Ice Cream Cones
This so reminds me of one of my favorite vacation stories. We were at sea world in San Diego. My 7 year cousin had just gotten a churros and a sea gull grabbed it out of his hands in mid flight. Later on at lunch a sea gull dive bombed my dad who was carrying a lunch tray of 3 plates of pasta and it went everywhere!!!
What was the best thing you ate in '08?
Avocados, especially with eggs. They have spoiled regular scrambled eggs forever.
Cook the Book: Jamie at Home
African peanut stew by Emeril... who would think that peanut butter would go with ground turkey and sweet potatoes, but it is so hearty and great when it gets cold.
Italian Superior Bakery
This place is literally right behind my house, we share the alley and I never knew!!!!
So, What Did You Make?
I had my parents over and cooked for them and my family for the first time... didn't feel like turkey so made
tomato, sausage, spinach risotto
Italian pot roast
Parmesan zucchini and potatoes
roasted garlic
pecan bars (that I got off of photograzing only a day earlier)
and two pieces of chicken for my brother who hates basically everything else!
Cook the Book: 'Martha Stewart's Cooking School'
cookies, cookies, and more cookies- lemon sugar cookies are the best
'Why Does Sonic Advertise on TV When There's No Sonic Near Me?'
Thank you, thank you, thank you for answering this question. Every time a sonic commercial comes on I get angry because there are no sonics within 130 miles from where I live. This has been a question in my house for months. Its just funny to see it when I checked the site!
Cook the Book: 'Chocolate Epiphany'
Chocolate covered bacon!
No More Bar Cars on Chicago's Metra Lines
Really? When did you ride? I took the metra milwaukee west line trains for 5 years and during rush hour there was almost always a refreshment car. I never went into one (I was in college and too young to drink) but thought it was kinda neat.
Mixed Review: Bob's Red Mill Gluten-Free Vanilla Cake Mix
Of course Celiac disease exists and other people have gluten sensitivities to a lesser extent, but that doesn't take away from the fact that other people buy gluten-free items because they see it as the next healthy trend. Because some people have problems with gluten, other people connect the wrong dots and decide that gluten in general is bad, and they avoid it, even though they, themselves, have no sensitivities.
And people who latch onto those sorts of bogus health claims make it difficult for people who do have sensitivities and allergies. Because they sit back and say, "I've cut out all gluten and I feel 100 percent better" while eating something that obviously contains gluten. As a result, people who do have the sensitivities are taken less seriously.
And I know some people who are gluten-sensitive who attempt to diagnose everyone else into having gluten issues. I understand that when you find the thing that has made you miserable, it's a wonderful thing and you want to share your knowledge. But it's a little much when it becomes a vendetta and you tell everyone that they should also avoid that food. And when people jump on that bandwagon for no reason, it does become a health fad.

firmly stating the facts is not minimizing anything, although it may not have come with the dramatic adjectives you were looking for.
so, she stated the facts and statistics concurrent with your post. maybe you're disappointed because they didn't come belabored with
Seriously Asian: Burmese Chicken-Coconut Soup
Lachlan, your account of the dish sounds great. Often one of the toppings for this dish is fried noodles, which sop up the soup and take on a wonderfully chewy texture. Sounds like we're dealing with different manifestations of the same dish.
Seriously Asian: Burmese Chicken-Coconut Soup
I traveled to Burma once, I loved it. This recipe looks similar to something I ate daily at Inle Lake called the 'Chan Breakfast'. This dish was a soup something like above (less ingredients I think) and greener in colour. I definitely remember chickpea being in it. There were rice noodles in the bottom and the top was drizzled with chili oil and sprinkled with crushed peanuts. Asian porridge I guess. What a way to start the day! I would dearly love to know how to make that. It was always preceded by a quarter of a papaya which came with a couple of limes to crush over it.

styska1 - I'm glad it worked for you! Sometimes I don't thin out the broth and serve it over rice instead of noodles - also delicious.
Gluten-Free Tuesday: If It Doesn't Have Gluten in It, I'm Eating It
I'd really love it if you could post the GF bread recipe.
I'm not a celiac (technically) but I don't eat gluten, aside from the occasional bit of oats..
Gluten seems to give me allergies identical to hayfever, so it was really surprising that my "hayfever" went away within a week of cutting gluten out of my diet.
All the bought GF breads I've tried have been dire. They have no substance whatsoever, and I have yet to find a tasty GF bread recipe that WORKS.
Pleeeeeease post it =P
