Thanks much - thinking that we'll spend the afternoon there munching away instead of just a drop in dinner.

Love Pepe's - but I'm visiting my daughter at school in Purchase NY this weekend - any feedback on the Pepe's in Yonkers? Or another pie/Italian suggestion?

Thanks

When Is Totonno's Opening? New Projected Date Is Late September, Early October

Any update on this potential date? Will be in NYC weekend of the 10th of October and I would love to visit. A pie there and a dog or two from Nathans = gourmet feast for a relocated NY'er

Moroni is pretty decen but in the middle of no where is right. Pretty sure that Dora (from paradisio at Dupont) and her husband own the place - both learned pizza at Paradisio. And yes, Vaca is fine good serviceable slice pizza served up in a fine italian deli. And Red Rocks is two blocks west of the same Metro (Columbia heights) as pete's.

O, and by the way, Spike is a stiff and the money comes from his family. In general, he got nothin'.

Paulie - last two times I was at 2 Amy's the pies were undercooked - it was as if the oven was running cool and no one was watching what came out of the oven. Great cheese plates and salumeri though. Try paradisio, RedRocks, some love Comet Ping Pong (i think it's Ok) and if you can wrangle a fresh pie at Pete's Apizza it's not bad either.

Totonno's Fire: They Will Rebuild

I Love this place - my first visit was in 1967 with a classmate from Xavier HS. Took my daughters there this summer and they immediately (and they have excellent pizza genes) declared it the Favorite. Was planning to go next NY visit end of the month - I'll just have to wait. It's my favorite.

RedRocks in the 'Washington Post'

I enjoy red Rocks - when the pizza is on, it's excellent (I can always tell by watching closely what the servers are passing out). I live about a block away, so this is a neighborhood hang with nice staff, good food and pretty cool customers.

Come Eat Pizza with Us for a Good Cause

I'm coming up from DC for this. I've been to Una and enjoyed it but not sure it's twice as good (as priced) as others. But I love a good pie and think this will be fun. See you there.

Motorino in Manhattan

Motorino's pizza is very close to the napolitano pizza I grew up with in Italy. It's not American-style pizza. I understand it's different. I love it! If the chef is there, he inspects the pies. I've seen him throw away pies that were too charred.

From Talk

Motorino in Manhattan

I agree with you. was there two night ago and had the margherita. Very good crust. poor toppings, by which I mean not enough of all and too much oil.

From Talk

Motorino in Manhattan

My wife and I were there a month ago. Service was great. The flavors were great. I like a nice charred crust, but they were a little burnt in my opinion. I have only been there once, I would go back anytime.

From Talk

Motorino in Manhattan

I went there recently for lunch, and for me (at least), it committed two of the cardinal sins that no restaurant should ever commit - don't advertise a lunch (or any) special on your website if you don't actually do it, and charge prices significantly higher than what is listed on the menu posted on your website. Motorino did both, and while my Sopresseta pizza was tasty and the crust was very very good it had too little cheese and sopresseta and too much liquidy (though very good) tomato sauce. Not going back. At all.

In Manhattan? Hmm.... I like Patsy's, Artichoke, Totonno, Pizza 33... and while this is less conventional of a pizza.. i really like Nina's on the UES... it's not a New York style pizza... but the pipping hot cheese.. and the oddly pizza-hut like crust... i don't know.. it's really good...

But with Motorino.. 3 of my friends asked me how it was today.. and I cannot recommend Motorino's to anybody I know..... Maybe because I didn't order more than just one pizza? Maybe bad night? in any case... i was disappointed... I would try Motorino's again.. as long as I'm not buying.. :)

@sushi burger: What is your favorite pizza in manhattan?

I love motorino although I do think their crust can be a bit poofy. I grew up in Florence. Motorino's pie reminds me of one of my favorite pizza places from home.

From Talk

Motorino in Manhattan

I had truly extraordinary pizza at the Manhattan Motorino two days ago for lunch. I ordered three pies, the brussels sprouts and pancetta, spicy soppressata, and a margherita. The crust was slightly chewy and crisp on the outside and tender on the inside. The crusts were not soggy at all. I brought them back to SE World HQ and everyone seemed to agree that this was world-class pizza.

From Talk

Motorino in Manhattan

@nithya at hungrydesi: It's awesome... Next weekend: Burger from song 7.2, ramen @ ippudo (if the line is short enough, otherwise setagaya), slice @ artichoke and dessert @ milk bar.... can't wait...

I also second the soggy crust... my sauce / cheese was dropping everywhere...

From Talk

Motorino in Manhattan

I've only been once (and never to the Bklyn location), but I thought it was pretty up there in terms of a good pie. That being said, they forgot to put garlic on my pie, which as a pregnant woman who is craving massive quantities of garlic, annoyed me. Service was good though as they were apologetic.

Now on to the crust - I thought it was a little too burnt and crunchy so I find these comments about it being too soggy interesting. Still, the cheese was sufficient and the sauce was flavorful and aplenty.

@sushiburger - I love the idea of "eat small bits here and there" in St. Marks. Yum.

A slice at the Full Moon, a sandwich at Mike's, by the way you can get the same sandwich at stand in Yankee Stadium for an outrageous $11, and go to Palumbo's or Eglidio's for a coffee and a pastry. That's a pretty good day!

From Slice

Forget the pizza if you are there in the daytime. Head into the Arther Avenue Market and get a sandwich at Mike's Deli.

Two overlooked slice spots in Little Italy, Bx, enjoy the comparo without cutting off your arm, are The Full Moon, corner of 187th and Arthur Ave, and at the other opposite end of same Arthur Ave, you have Catania's, serves pretty good food too! Catania's people had a split years ago and another Catanias is also located in the shopping center across from the future Frank Pepe, on Central Avenue in YONKERS, nice coincidence huh Adam, check it out! It's in a small strip mall next to Nathan's. You can't miss it and it's worth a taste. Louie & Ernie's is very good. Sauce needs a little more personality, but that's quibling.Owned by very nice people.

Yuck. CT has so many better pizzas. Stop giving this overrated junk so much press :)

Mario's—although I'm not sure if pizza is on the menu there. Ed Levine recounts this in his pizza book. That they almost discourage the ordering of pizza, since the owner doesn't think it's refined enough food. But it's a damn good pizza.

I did a pizza crawl there at one point (for Time Out New York, so I couldn't really blog my findings on Slice at the time) and found Ivana's Pizzeria to be my favorite plain slice in the area.

If you want Neapolitan-style, you can do Zero Otto Nove, though I wasn't bowled over by it. And, technically, it's Salerno-style, since the owner/pizzaiolo hails from that city, but I had a hard time figuring out the difference.

If you are not from The Bronx and have access to a car and are going out through Throgs Neck area, LOUIE & ERNIE'S has been haunting me lately as far as Bronx pizza goes. I so need to get back there.

Tried Primo Italiano in Reston per a previous post. Surprisingly good Italian-American food, worthy of a more serious restaurant, hidden in a counter service deli. I would go back for their pastas for sure.

As for the pizza, quite frankly, I'd never order it again. The crust is too squishy and both the cheese and sauce are standard issue. Almost every casual Italian-American resto in the burbs makes pizza, and this is a bit below average. For the poster who recommended it, I think Italian Cafe in Falls Church is much better. Still, none of these places put the same effort into the crust as a serious pizza parlor.

2 Amys is still tops, not just for DC, but would be hard to beat anywhere.

I love ordering an onion and olive pie from Vace. Getting a reheated slice does not do any pizza justice. They put the cheese under the tomato sauce here. Carry-out only. Finding excellent pizza can be difficult anywhere, especially if it is not thin crust.

Washington Deli is ok for what it is, but really, not serious at all.

The Atomica at Pizzeria Paradiso is excellent.

All the rest are ok to very good. have not tried Primo Italiano in Reston (mentioned above but this is the first I've heard of it) or American Flatbreads which is the Vermont place now in the VA suburbs which gets high marks.

Washington Deli is opening up a new store on 5830 Georgia Ave NW. I hope they can maintain the same standard of the one on 20th and K St.

From Slice

Top Chef's Spike Mendelsohn Opening D.C. Pizzeria

I don't get out to Reston, VA very often, but I'll keep that in mind.

If you're looking for NY style slices in DC, I found it at the Washington Deli on 20th and K St. I decided to bite the bullet and get on the subway to check the place out (closest one is Farragut West station) yesterday for lunch and it is really close. It reminded me a little of the slices at Joe's on Carmine St in NYC. The underside was nice and crisp with some char, no tip sag. when I went in, they had a rack of pies in the back counter and a bunch of pies up front at the display counter. It was worth the trip even thought it isn't the most convenient for me during lunch hour. it literally took me an hour and 7 minutes total time.

From Slice

Top Chef's Spike Mendelsohn Opening D.C. Pizzeria

You have to go outside DC to get the best pizza. Primo Italiano in Reston, VA just outside DC has the best pizza by far.

I also strongly recommend Crozet Pizza outside of Charlottesville if you are ever in that area. You need a reservation because they only cook one pizza at a time.

From Slice

Top Chef's Spike Mendelsohn Opening D.C. Pizzeria

oh man...I didn't know that Vace had a deli store in Bethesda, MD! That's fairly convenient to me since about a 20 minute drive away from Bethesda. I just wish that downtown DC had more places that sell good slices (or at least convenient to where I work). I'm guessing maybe some of these mom and pop pizzerias can't afford the rent?
