Indian..not a Naan maker {there actually is an o.k." grocery product that, when grilled on open flame is fair} I can't replicate my favorite Vindaloo either so out {or order in} I do!

white bread with peanut butter & pickles. Slices of pepparoni with peanut butter, eaten like a ritz cracker...My Dad made us sugar & butter {soft} sandwhiches on white bread when my Mom wasn't around!

Best recipe for wontons

Catch as catch can, but, I tend to always have frozen, large uncooked shrimp around. I brieflly cook them in broth with hunk of ginger & halved galric cloves & dried red peppers, strain, mince and use the same array of goodies largely listed in the bulk of comments.
@G.O.M...I've made savory ones as well with hot suasage & of course they rule...it's sausage!!

Don't read this. I am an evil old man..

Happy Birthday to me ..thanks G.O.M. for the childhood blast from the past favorite treat! I will now throw out the idea of birthday cake & feast on this. {No sharing either!}
P.S. There apparently was a movie made in 2000 called Lorna Doone {after the book} & it did not involve shortbreads.

It's my Birthday & we're in Montreal..thinking of indulging in fois gras for lunch at Boris Bistro & lamb tandoor for dinner at a place I've not tried called Devi. {think there might be a sister resto in NYC}

Incorrect Fast Food Memories

I agree with imapct of marketing on kids..I used to BEG {literally} my Mother to get that stuff that was striped jelly & Peanut Butter in a jar b/c of ads on T.V. She relented once & when I got home & ripped into it I was completely deflated, but, months later the taste-memory fell away & the insisting started all over again. Having had to throw out the 1st jar, my Mom simply turned a deaf ear & let me sulk...I see that stuff in the market still & can only imagine that it is as gross now as it was then!

What 'cha cooking this weekend? Light, fresh and grilled here.

For some reason {perhaps 2 eggplant in my fridge } I went all out mideastish yesterday..grilled the eggplant then made killer babag. {really love the smoky, charred flavor grilling the eggplant lends to it.}.a yummy greek yogurt tzatzki {sp.} with fresh cuke, scallion, etc. fresh tabouleh, then mixed some grated onion, oregano, paprika, etc in ground lamb & made minimeat balls..big fat platter fresh lemon and warmed syrian bead..it was a lingering afternoon repast..I could dive in again now...not sure what this rainy Sunday holds though going forward.

Also, deep fry in veg./canola oil..deluge with salt & top almost anything with them. I store them in plastic container if there are any left over, what with garnishing & salty, delicious nibbling!

I don't have a ___ in my kitchen and I don't want one.

Microwave {good for extra storage space if already built in to where you live though}
Garlic press
Electric can opener { and all otherwise non-daily use/necessary counter top "eater-uppers"}
electric fry pan {haven't thoguht about in a long time 'til I read this!}
toaster oven {I have a broiler & oven & contrary to some posts above I actually adore my 60's very-much workable old-school toaster}
crockpot/slow cooker {no kids & simply never got into it notwithstanding the deluge of our fave FN faker Sandra Lee who I think must have an owenrship interest in the slow cooker industry!}

Your food related book favorites?

A Goose in Toulouse is wonderful. A trip to remote areas in France & many scents, histories, tastes. Bourdain's are indeed great. Tenth Muse by Judith Jones I recently read & liked. Largely agree with the bulk of comments. I must admit, I am a bit shocked to see NO books from Sandra Lee or R.R.! ; - )

Need an easy X-mas brunch recipe-Help!

...May be a tad late for a reply, but a neat and incredibly simple option would be Scotch Eggs. Hard boiled eggs are wrapped in savory sausage meat then dipped in egg then bread crumbs {I like seasoned panko} then either deep fried, or, easier & not so messy, baked. They are delicious, and can be done in advance & served at room temperature. You can serve sauteed or roasted potatoes on side or grits/polenta.

From Talk

What to do with Spaetzle?

So easy to make & so different in it's presentation that I like to serve it when entertaining. I make "dough" then press into boiling water through colander then after floating little nuggets make their appearance I satuee in brown butter & nutmeg. Very comfy & tasty..great with a seared loin pork chop & sauteed apples, pears, etc

From Talk

What do you go "out" for?

I go out for Indian food because it's too labor intensive to prepare at home and most Indian dishes have a million ingredients which I almost never have in my pantry.

I also prefer to eat steaks at restaurants because I'm terrible at barbecuing and I always end up overcooking the meat.

From Talk

What do you go "out" for?

The maple syrup and pecan ice cream from the Point G ice cream bar in Montreal. Just gorgeous and worth the 20 minute drive from my place.

From Talk

What do you go "out" for?

sushi would be my pick too -- I'd rather not risk poisoning myself (or my friends) because the fish I chose shouldn't have been eaten raw.

And in the summer, I'd go out for pizzas too -- rather not get my kitchen all friggin hot just for 20 minutes of actual baking.

From Talk

What do you go "out" for?

I don't care for sushi, and pizza is not high on my list either. I go out for FISH AND CHIPS -- I love really good fried fish, and has to be in a restaurant where waitress delivers it immediately. The Pig and Whistle Pub in Cocoa Beach is where I go for this. Also to the Country Corner Cafe on merritt island for their yummy country-fried steak with sausage gravy over it (in lieu of usual cream sauce) and a huge biscuit on the side.

And an occasional fancy dish hard to manage -- rack of lamb, for instance.

I used to think only Thai Thai near me could satisfy my craving for Shrimp with Red Curry Sauce -- but I've gotten pretty good at duplicating that at home after receiving a bag of all kinds of Thai groceries for Christmas.

What do you go "out" for?

mexican ... because i make it all the time, but i just cant stand to add as much as much oil, cheese and fat as the restaurant's willing to, even if it's just delicious

also, the day i learn to make pho at home is the day i will be complete

From Talk

What do you go "out" for?

I'm happy to go out for most things as I like being in restaurants. But I don't like to go out for steak. I am much happier with the steaks I make than the ones I would have to pay a bundle for.

From Talk

What do you go "out" for?

We go out when I don't feel like cooking or if I'm craving something that can't be delivered to my door. Usually, this involves sushi.

From Talk

What do you go "out" for?

I keep my kitchen kosher/dairy (long story) so anything non-kosher I eat out. I will cook things like chicken at other people's houses.

From Talk

What do you go "out" for?

I go out for mussels in white wine sauce! There used to be a great restaurant on 95th and Columbus Ave. in N.Y. called "Under The Stairs", that made the absolute best! When finished, the diners would drink the leftover juice in the bowl, or took it home because it was so delicious!

From Talk

What do you go "out" for?

since my boyfriend and i rarely have nights off when restaurants are actually open (both in the industry) we go out for the experience of being "out". i agree with seeking out ethnic cuisines- that i wouldn't cook- at restaurants, (indian, sushi, moroccan, etc.). however sometimes you just want a beautiful atmosphere, impeccable service, and someone else to cook for you!

From Talk

What do you go "out" for?

Almost all kinds of seafood...tuna is hard to cook perfectly, shrimp just grosses me out to look at...after watching my dad the fisherman hook and then clean/filet the fish, I enjoy it much more when its simply placed in front of me.

French fries too. I mean GOOD fries. Most places are bland, just like the frozen ones I have at home...but the places with the crispy, wedge cut fries- those are worth it.

One more- milkshakes and pancakes from diners. Not even for taste, just for the whole childhood-memory aspect.

Pretzels with hummus or salsa. Also make trail mix with your favorites like dried fruit, nuts, seeds, chocolate chips etc.Another good thing is keeping a selection of tea and other instant drinks on hand which can sometimes be just as satisfying as a snack.

Any Bring-From-Home Snack Ideas?

I completely understand why popcorn popping could be banned at a workplace. The number of people who are unable to pop a bag of microwaveable popcorn without burning it is just astounding.

I like plums or cereal or string cheese or chocolate.

From Serious Eats

Any Bring-From-Home Snack Ideas?

I know popcorn has already been brought up, but here's my twist: I make it at home ahead of time on the stovetop. The benefits of this are great: first, popcorn kernels are super cheap. Second, you can control the health factor, making it with olive oil, etc. Third, you can dress it up or leave it plain. I pre-salt the oil before adding the kernels, then once the corn is popped, I add a little butter and some nutritional yeast. You can do cheese powder, or a selection of herbs. You could even go sweet with some kettle corn recipes. After it's cooled completely, I transfer it to a ziplock bag, which usually lasts several days at the office.

A small piece of fruit! Because usually I am craving sweets for a snack.

From Serious Eats

Any Bring-From-Home Snack Ideas?

Cut up fruit. Fruit gummies. Olives. Whatever I can get my hands on that's healthy because as people in the office know, my mouth is like a constant slow humming hoover vac.

Great in the morning so you can get a head start on drinking before lunch. Great in the afternoon so you can pull through the last hours of work.

@Morrob You're right! I meant the old-fashioned oatmeal you get in bulk, not the the instant kind in the packets. Mind too fast for the fingers.

Best TV Chef? Worst TV Chef?

I miss "Microwave Master" with Donovan Jon Fandre, "Capril's Kitchen" with Caprile Pence, "Cooking Monday Through Friday" with Michelle Urvater and "Sunshine Cuisine" with Jean-Pierre Brehier.

As far as the worst, I would rather watch the chef on "The Muppet Show" than Alton Brown. David Rosengarten was so much more professional and didn't rely on forced humor.

@gentlyferal: I LOVE beansprouts raw and unadorned!

I used to eat Wonderbread, barely toasted with Miracle Whip for breakfast before school. Sometimes with pickles, sometimes with a piece of American cheese, but usually just plain. In my house we also liked to nuke cheese on tortillas after school and then wrap it all around a pickle. Bologna around a pickle was good too. I've always loved pickles - still do.

Last one: my mom usually bought vanilla ice cream in gallon buckets so to make chocolate, we mixed it with Nestle from a can until it was the consistency of soft serve. I still like to stir my ice cream until soft...
