Great Jones Cafe: A Great Burger Whose Bun Renders It Merely Good
It's been a long time since I've been to the Great Jones Cafe, but every meal I had there was first-rate.
Red Hook Ball Field Vendors Will Return May 2
When I lived in the area and needed to go the the post office on a Saturday, I went just before its midday closing time. By the time I was done at the post office, the food vendors were just starting to serve tacos. They served the best soft-shell tacos in New York.

I'd previously purchased the meal boxes at Trader Joe's, not Whole Foods.

Great Burger from Waterfront Ale House in New York City
Thanks for bringing this to my attention.
The Waterfront Ale House on Atlantic Avenue, Brooklyn, was a favorite of mine when I lived in the area. It's good to know that they have a place in Manhattan.

Thank you for pointing out the 99-cent meal packages at Patel Brothers.
I used to purchase comparable Indian meals at Whole Foods when I'd lived nearby one a few years ago. Each had contained two sealed bags; one had the meal, and the other had the rice; the combination was ideal.
I often drive by the Patel Brothers in Bellerose, Queens, and I knew that I'd eventually have a reason for shopping there. I found a selection of the Swad meal that you'd described; each box contains a single package of a meal without rice. I've had one, so far, and it was very good.
Other brands were stocked. A brand, called Mysore Woodland, had a lemon rice meal, which I'd found to be quite satisfying.
Each of meals is modest in size. However, as is typical of Indian food, the flavors, spices, and natural vegetable ingredients tend to satisfy one. Eating large portions of non-Indian (or non-Thai) food can still leave one hungry.
I'm looking forward to shopping at Patel Brothers again. There are more 99-cent meals I'd like try. I had bought a container of rice pudding (which is found in the refrigerated section), and I look forward to enjoying it again. In the freezer, I saw some containers of mango ice cream, and, as the weather warms up, I look forward to trying some. :^)
Photo of the Day: Me And My Egg Roll
When I lived in the Brooklyn, Me and My Egg Roll was my local go-to place for take-up or delivery. The egg roll is fine. The sesame chicken is very good.
It's good to know that M&MER is still in business. :^)

@roboppy: Thank you for your comments. I do, indeed, prefer a well-done cheeseburger. If a waiter at a particularly good restaurant strongly recommends that the beef be prepared medium-well, I'll go along with his advice.

If someone prefers a well-done cheeseburger, the results sounds fine.
However, I'm wondering if the stuffed cheese is excessively hot. In other words, do you end up getting served a hot, molten-lava-of-cheese-surprise, burning the inside of your mouth?
Have You Eaten Burgers Made With Fruit?
It is not usual for raisins to be mixed in with ground beef in empanadas.
The ingredients within an empanada are, of course, not compressed, as the ingredients of hamburger. However, the taste of the ground beef and raisins mixed together is fine, for sure.
Red Hook Ball Field Vendors Will Return May 2
Update: The Red Hook vendors expect to stay open until the last week of October (31st through Nov 1st). However, those setting up at the BK flea market will remain open until November or December.

@fobbyamerican: Good question. I will investigate and get back to you..

does anyone know when the last day they are open?

@Sir Cooksalot It was a great day, although the Yankess didn't win and the beef brisket sandwich I got at the stadium wan't anything to write home about. I made up for it though. Instead of parking at Carroll Street we drove to Williamsburg and parked near Motorino. I dropped off my Limoncello so it would be chilled when we returned, extracted a shot and jumped on the L train. When we returned to Motorino after the game we had what might be the best Bufala Margherita I've ever had. The crust was a home run (which the Yankees could have used a couple of more of that day). Anyway, here are some shots from the truck:

Next time I'll go back a little later in the day when all the trucks are in full swing.
Ciao,

These trucks were amazing yesterday. Carne asada tacos and goat tacos (from the Perez truck), great huarache, the freshest and most amazing tamale I've ever tasted, great pupusas, awesome papas rellenos, tasty tamarind drink, and much more that I can't remember. (Holy heck, what was that thing with the pool of black bean sauce ready to escape when we bit into it? That was great.) I only had enough room for a few bites of various things. Needed more stomachs.
The only disappointment was the ceviche from the easternmost truck. Not fresh-tasting. One very charming chef, who was also there tasting the amazing cuisine, said this was because they added the lime beforehand, rather than putting in it at the time of purchase, as I observed the second-from-easternmost vendors doing.
I wish I could find something nearly this good here in Newark. Why don't WE have our own version of this over here? I need to talk to Cory Booker STAT.

Waterfront has always been my favorite watering hole, for their fine selection of seasonal taps. Their burgers are usually pretty good and hearty. Sometimes their special burgers like the bison or "Korean BBQ" burger are worth checking out for a change of pace. I'm a fan of their smoked chicken BBQ, with a pint of Victory HopDevil. Mmm mmm. This reminds me that it's time to head over there for a new review...
Great Jones Cafe: A Great Burger Whose Bun Renders It Merely Good
Nick,
You're right about the bun. It was too sweet for a salty, savory cheeseburger, especially the one covered in thick cut bacon and hearty chili like the version I had at Great Jones Cafe. The wings are great too, a tomatoey hot sauce, very unique, very delicious but each wing is a little on the small side.

@ Paulie Gee this sounds like the best day ever. Enjoy!
Red Hook Ball Field Vendors Will Return May 2
@fredid Thanks. If I get there early enough on 5/2 I should be able to park my car near Carroll Street, hop the subway and get up to Yankee Stadium for a 1:05PM start. Then I can come back for my car and hit up Anselmo's for a coal oven pie.
Ciao,
Paulie Gee

I too was wondering if it was a take on the Harry Nilsson (sp?) song "Me and My Arrow".

This place is disgusting. The fud is horrible (it cannot be termed 'food'). Name is mildly amusing until you find yourself bent over the toilet regurgitating Lunch Special #8. Should really be named Me & Mylanta.
Photo of the Day: Me And My Egg Roll
Shouldn't it be "My Egg Roll and I"?

I heard that's where Frank Sinatra & Sammy Davis Jr. used to go for Chinese food

"Great name serving great food"
Sadly I have to disagree. They DO make some of the best wonton soup in the neighborhood. but the rest of it as inconsistent and often downright bad. Very much a 'gloopy' corner chinese. we order from there now and then only because of the wonton soup and have yet to find other consistently good things to order. The double cooked pork was bad last time (though I used to like it) and even their lo mein left something to be desired.

That is just toooo cute. I would have to definitely buy an egg roll from this place on principle.
Cheese-Stuffed Burgers from the Stumble Inn in New York City
@stewmeat: Actually, I don't mix the cheese with the meat. I make two patties, put the cheese in the center, and then seal them to make one burger.
Cheese-Stuffed Burgers from the Stumble Inn in New York City
@ roboppy: Thanks for featuring my post & photo! :D
@ starpower: To reaffirm what Robyn said, it's not volcanically hot cheese when you eat that burger. It's just warm enough to make the cheese gooey.
@ klw07: Wow...I'm sorry you had two awful incidents on your ventures to Stumble Inn. I guess I'm fortunate enough that it's too early to get drunk (it's 12 PM) and it's relatively cold (when I went there with two other female friends) for anyone to really want to walk or stay out.
Cheese-Stuffed Burgers from the Stumble Inn in New York City
I'm with Barbara, we grill stuffed burgers all summer long exactly how she described.
Cheese-Stuffed Burgers from the Stumble Inn in New York City
these really do not look appetizing at all, for some reason i do not like cheese filled things and includes cheese filled pizza crusts.
I am with Barbara, at least shred the cheese and mix it in with the meat.
Cheese-Stuffed Burgers from the Stumble Inn in New York City
The first time I in the Stumble Inn over the summer, sitting out on the sidewalk, one of their male patrons dropped his pants and flashed me. The last time I was in the Stumble Inn, my female friend was groped and verbally assaulted by yet another charming patron. This could be a burger so good that herds of cows would beg to eat it and I still would never set foot in that place ever again.

my mouth literally dropped when i saw this. and i like my burgers pretty damn done, so it's a win win for me. thanks for the post!

I already commented on the photo, but I just wanted to add that here in Jucy Lucy land the places that serve Jucys typically cook them to medium.

Ya gotta deep-fry it.
And use more bacon.

@starpower: I don't think I've ever met anyone who prefers a well-done burger.. ;_; But I know there are people out there who do. My friends and I probably all think alike. Looking at Tina's photos, the cheese doesn't look excessively hot.
@Barbara: Make me a cheese-stuffed burger please! ;)
Cheese-Stuffed Burgers from the Stumble Inn in New York City
I think the Stumble Inn may be going about this the wrong way, as I make medium-rare cheese-stuffed burgers pretty often. The burger pictured is too thick, for starters. It's going to have to be cooked way too long to melt the cheese. The cheese should be chilled, but not frosty. I like blue cheese with a lamb burger, and cheddar with beef. The cheese should be shredded or crumbled, too. Sear, sear, done. Melted cheese, medium-rare burger.
