The Vegan Experience Days 22 and 23: Charting My Cravings

I lived with an attempted vegan in college (she tried, she failed, but she put in a good solid effort). While she was fully vegan I ate all our shared meals as a vegan as well and can definitely say the two things I missed most were butter and cheese. As a kid my family ate chicken most frequently and fish was a close second (mom was a big believer in fish as brain food...can't say I turned out half bad for it either). Beef was an occasional treat, popping up most frequently in the summer months when we grilled continuously. Moving away from home, college cafeteria food left a lot to be desired and the vegetarian options looked least unappetizing and then living off campus left me relatively poor and meat free. Now, every so often I throw chicken on a salad and I continue to believe in fish as brain food, but I just don't crave meat much. Cheese and butter, though, I commend you for dealing so well :)

Serious Entertaining: Dinner and a Movie, 'Lagaan: Once Upon a Time in India'

Loved Lagaan, watched it a number of years ago and maybe it's time to do it again! And of course we made sure to watch it over the course of two evenings so we could have twice the amount of Indian feast!

Cook the Book: 'The Art of Eating Cookbook'

I used to love reading Gourmet, granted I couldn't afford a lot of the food oriented vacations and special ingredients/tools/cookware...but it sure was wonderful to dream. And I've always loved the technical acuity of Cook's Illustrated.

The Vegan Experience, Day 6: Calorie Control

A formerly-vegan friend of mine went back to being a vegetarian because of dairy. She just couldn't live without ice cream or cheese. I'm predominantly meat-free myself (it's all about the beans!!) and realize that the removal of dairy would probably be the single most difficult hurdle towards veganism. I'm a huge fan of Indian food, but realize that ghee and paneer just would not be feasible!

We Tried Every Trader Joe's "Trader Moon" Wine

I haven't had any of the Trader Moon wines, but I think I will need to try the Viognier. When I visited Australia a few years ago we toured vineyards and it was the first time I had wine made from the viognier grape and as a poor grad student, $6 wine sounds grand.

From Slice

Providence, RI: Nice Slice Pizzeria

I ate there when it first opened when I was in college. I ate a potato topped pie...it was interesting, but ultimately too carb-heavy (yes, there really is such a thing). I just checked out their website and didn't see it listed, so I'm assuming it was something they tried when they first opened and didn't continue :P

About ssdf23

Website:

Location: Seattle, but my heart is in NYC

About: I grew up 20 minutes out of the city, but have moved around since I got out of college. (That's awhile now) I do miss it, and will someday return 'home' but while I'm unattached and able, I figure live everywhere...as long as it's on a coast :P

Favorite foods: Indian food, especially if it has lentils or chickpeas. Chana Pindi is my suuuper fave, but I can and will eat anything Indian anytime. And Japanese. I love ramen. And soba. And sticky rice. Yeah, I can't really choose...

Last bite on earth: Potato and onion pierogies. None of that pesky cheddar cheese or any other additions. The pureness of flavor of caramelized onions in tasty smooth potato like my great grandma used to make. MMMM.
