NYC Quintessential: Lombardi's Coal-Oven Pizza

I think Lombardi's is really overrated and much too expensive. The cheese is rubbery, there's never enough sauce and either the crust is too soggy or just dry and chewy beyond belief. But my office has been ordering from there for years so i deal with it (trying desperately to hold my native New Yorker pizza eating tongue back).

Their one saving grace: the spinach and ricotta pie.

Lunch for One: Olive's Vegetarian Sandwich

looks nearly identical to columbine's malibu veg - though the malibu doesn't have avocado and the star of the sandwich are the thick slices of cheddar. either way both are delicious!

A Guide to Tropical Fruit in South America

as a self-proclaimed meat and potatoes girl, the only time i eat fruit and vegetables is if it's in my sandwich or on the side of my pancakes. whenever i go visit my family in thailand though, all i want is produce! my favorite are mangosteens - and i am so angry that dean and deluca charges $40/lb for them!? that's a monstrosity.

i like this place, but every time i go in, i come out smelling funny. it's inevitable.

Aquavit Primer: the Scandinavian Spirit

i spent a month in copenhagen for work and brought back a caraway-infused bottle for myself. the moment i took it out of the bag, the 2 danish guys sitting on my couch simultaneously said "eeuuughhhhh!!!!" and made the same disgusted face. they then proceeded to tell me that it's an old man grandpa drink that is traditionally served at christmas time.

Sugar Rush: The Hunt For Columbine's Whoopie Pie

i remember when i first saw these, i didn't think anything of it... ok choco cake like thing with sweet white icing. meh. then i tried it..... WOW. tastes soooo deliciously homemade, really really amazing. today they had ina's coconut cupcake - also really freakin good and usually sells out quickly.

Dinner Tonight: Quick White Bean Stew with Swiss Chard and Tomatoes

made this last night with crushed tomatoes i had on hand, but there wasn't nearly enough liquid! i ended up adding the entire 28oz can and my stew was more of a thick, thick sauce for pasta - still delicious though! also added much more crushed red pepper and a few liberal splashes of balsamic vinegar.

Hot Dog of the Week: Danish Hot Dog

i tried one of these with "everything" while i was working in copenhagen. as far as street food goes, their shawarma is way better! as a true new yorker i prefer dirty water dogs!

Coffee Chronicles: Vietnamese Coffee Converts The Purist

iced coffee is prepared like this in thailand as well! try O-lieng, it is a brand of pre-mixed dark coffee + sugar. mmmm. thai angel in chinatown makes a great thai iced coffee with milk (and not to mention penang curry) too.

i work right around here as well. their baked goods are great - but for a better value, try Pecan just half a block away across the street from the 1 train on franklin.

Scrambling Eggs with an Espresso Machine

that is really horrifying. we have a cimbali in my office and when you unscrew the steamer cap, there is plenty of residue milk crust in there because sure you wipe off the exterior, but stuff still gets all up in the nooks and crannies of the screw threads... i can't imagine doing that with eggs... seems very unsanitary.

Best Red Velvet Cake in Brooklyn

billy's makes awesome cupcakes, so i'm sure the red velvet is scrumptious there. they also have a new tribeca location so that's at least close to bklyn. although much further up (86th and 2nd) two little red hens also makes AMAZING cupcakes (dean & deluca sells them at their soho store) and i have seen (not eaten) a gorgeous, gorgeous red velvet bday cake they made for my co-worker.

The New Breed of NYC Hot Dogs: Are They Really Better?

i've been to new york hot dog and coffee, tried a standard beef dog with kraut, mustard, and ketchup. kind of flavorless... guess you'd go for the toppings.. but then, why not just eat a bulgogi sandwich?
