I am from Cuba and I love "cubanos" but I would like to make clear that a REAL cuban sandwich consists of : cuban bread (or french or italian), roasted pork (the kind that is cooked as if you are going to eat it for dinner), ham, swiss cheese and SOUR pickles, not bread and butter pickles. The only condiment to use is yellow mustard. Spread butter on the outside of the bread before pressing and grilling.
We also have something called "media noche", which is the exact same thing but the bread you use is softer and sweater, similar to an egg bread but sweater. Finally you can also make "galleticas preparadas", which is the same filling but you use soda crackers instead of bread and it does not get grilled. Now I am really home sick because I live in an area where there are no cuban restaurants!
