I would definitely recommend Laduree on Champs Elysee for tea and macaroons. It is a little pricey but just delicious !
Waffles or Pancakes?
I LOVE waffles.. yum with some chocolate and strawberries !
What is appealing about beer?
I would suggext trying some fruit beers to start with. Like Linderman's fruit beer. It's delicious. You can move on to lighter fruiter ales like blue moon. You shoud definitely give beer another try !

I take my coffee very seriously. have more than 3 cups a day !!
Lately I have been drinking this really great organic blend - it has a bright bold flavor.. I found it at whole foods in fresno But I have not been able to find it here in LA. I order it online and it arrive fresh to my apt.

Barista in the Wild, Part 4: A Relationship With Espresso
I agree ! there is very little hope there
I have had some great espressos back in my days as an intern in Paris and I tried some starbucks espresso the other day - it does not even come close !
Barista In The Wild, Part 3: Working Toward Coffee Sustainability
That was a great link! The concept of sustainability Awarness become a very important issue when it comes to a commondity that is traded at such an enormous scale like coffee.
Even though Fair Trade and Organic Certified does not ensure a quality product, it is definitely a step towards a better quality coffee ! And sometimes a great tasting one too!
Fancy Coffee for my beau.
i've been ordering my coffee from Anthony's since my last trip to Maui...
but now i feel nuts doing it. where the amazing local coffee at? porto rico,
gorilla, stumptown? is there an Anthony hidden somewhere nearby?
What is appealing about beer?
i dont like the earthy yeast tones to beer. when i have had fruity ones they were good because they masked the yeast flavor.
What is appealing about beer?
I don't really like beer that much except for fruity type things such as fruity Lambic types of beer.
Beer can be fun to cook with. I make a really good beer bread that my friends rave about.
What is appealing about beer?
go to germany. try a radler at hofbrauhaus in munich. tasty.
What is appealing about beer?
wow - surprisingly enough this did not deteriorate into a war....maybe this will help.
beer is 4 ingredients:
water
malt
hops
yeast
as a beverage, it's fairly simple recipe yet produces a vast assortment of flavors, colors, aroma, style, alcohol levels, fizzy, not fizzy, sweet, sour, etc...
beer is a much more complex beverage than wine which is just grape juice and yeast (and oak when used) Scientifically speaking, wine is a far less complex beverage, and therefore (some would argue) far fussier to pair with food than beer. There is a great book called The Brewmaster's Table by Garrett Oliver that goes into great detail on food pairing with beer.
Now I will confess that I'm a beer brewer and wine maker - I love them both, and they each have their place. but it's hard to beat a nice cold refreshing pint of ale on a hot day!
What is appealing about beer?
Yes, it's an acquired taste, one that I acquired at a very young age :-)
What is appealing about beer?
There is oodles of varieties that one should find to their taste. More and more places are pairing beers with dishes just like you would with wine. Cooking and baking with beer is also fun and can "make" a dish.
Best of Trader Joe ?
Oh Trader Joes!
@anysuchname- Yes! Everything crackers!! With hummus...
Our favs:
-Masala Veggie burgers
-Mandrain Orange chicken and BBQ teriyaki chicken, also buy the harvest hodgepodge mixed veg. stir-fry them today, its better and cheaper than chinese take out for two.
-Soymilk, I buy the big boxes, much cheaper
-Jojo's Tj's Oreos, AMAZING! many flavors
Just pick up something new every time you go. Every visit is an adventure!
Best of Trader Joe ?
Haricot vert in frozen foods
Whole grain english muffins
Best of Trader Joe ?
COOL PLACE! An adventure for the epicurian, I tend to spend to much when I go there, be frugul !
Best of Trader Joe ?
Great place to buy nuts (cashews, pecans, walnuts) - much cheaper than Whole Foods. Generally, Trader Joe's is fantastic for basics and less expensive than its competition. By basics, bread, condiments - anything packaged.
I wouldn't buy produce there, however, it's better from a farmer's market or a Whole Foods-type store.
Best of Trader Joe ?
@mhurst826. Completely agree. The triple ginger snaps are awesome. I can't buy them anymore, because there is NO stopping me when I get into them.
I love orange flavored dried cranberries in my oatmeal and TJ's are the best and cheap!
I love to go and just get something new every time (it takes me almost an hour to get to my closest TJ). It is my favorite go to spot when i want to do something fun .. yet practical 8-).
Best of Trader Joe ?
- I don't know what they are called but the are butter cookies with chocolate centers. SO GOOD
- Frozen fish items like the seafood mix are great
- Vanilla beans are pretty affordable, especially compared to other places by me
Best of Trader Joe ?
I live in Rhode Island and I've already been a couple times, so exciting! Trader Joe's is a little like a cult but I'm totally joining.
I don't but a ton of prepared foods (although I've tried a couple and been impressed) so I mostly love their prices on stuff like Italian pasta and dried fruits and nuts.
Sadly though there is no wine section since you can't sell it in grocery stores in Rhode Island :(
Best of Trader Joe ?
the thing i remember impressed me was there nut selection. if you have a great supermarket nearby this might not do it for you... but bags of unsalted cashews... yum!
Best of Trader Joe ?
Better prices than other stores on dried fruits and nuts. I like their frozen enchiladas, lasagna, tamales, etc. for cheap lunches (check the calorie counts, they reeeeeally vary). Also good prices on beer and wine.
I agree the cheese is not always a good bet. I buy goat cheese there because it's well-sealed, but the quality of their other cheeses I think is uneven.
Yes also on the triple ginger cookies and the everything crackers (and everything bagel chips).
Don't get attached to anything in particular there, or stock up -- they are notorious for axing products with no warning and never having them again.
Best of Trader Joe ?
Here are my favs from TJ's:
-Artisan Puffy Pastry (which I use to make a Cheat's Pain aux Chocolat)
-Chocolate Chip Cookie Dough (it's even better than the Nestle Toll House )
-Sipping Chocolate (available seasonally, winter)
-Joe's O's cereal
-Turkey & Rice stuffed red bell peppers (it's really good)
-Tiramisu (it's what I often bring to a potluck and it's always the first dish finished)
-Blood Orange Soda (this soda is always sold out, I've saw 1 woman put 10 bottles into her cart)
-Triple Ginger Cookies
-Chocolate Orange Sticks
- Carolans (sp?) Irish Cream
Best of Trader Joe ?
If you like hot sauce, try the Trader Joe's Chili Pepper Sauce or Jalapeno Pepper Sauce! Great!! Also, the Mini Chicken/Cilantro Wontons are excellent. And, for a salsa try the Pineapple Salsa. It's great on chips, chicken and everything in between!
Best of Trader Joe ?
I'm not very impressed with Trader Joe's. They have mostly prepackaged specialty items (at my location anyways), and I thought it disconcerting that there is no meat or deli counter at all. I can see the appeal of it if you are in an area where there isn't much variety (i.e. small town). But in my city I can find really fresh ingredients, specialty and ethnic foods at various markets, grocery stores and farmer markets. I would rather go to the corner Halal (or Asian, or Mexican, etc.) market and explore the variety, support local business, and meet people. IMHO.
Barista In The Wild, Part 3: Working Toward Coffee Sustainability
Well, good for Starbucks. And everyone is getting involved here, from small scale single origins, to blends, to even retailers like Trader Joe's and Whole Foods. I have the TJ's Five Country Espresso ready to break open this weekend. After that, I'm getting more Weaver's, which I tried recently. Their Organic Blend is from something like 7 countries. But really, really smooth. I have no experience yet with Intelligensia yet, but look forward to trying that too. God I love coffee.
Fancy Coffee for my beau.
I'm on the east coast, and I'll be sure to look into all of your suggestions! Thank you very much, and if you think of anything else be sure to let me know!
Barista in the Wild, Part 4: A Relationship With Espresso
I would never mock anyone in a barista position. In the end we're all working towards a common goal as long as we're taking quality seriously. It's just hard to imagine training that many employees on a manual machine and have the consistency that is craved in coffee shops. I respect Starbucks baristas with all of my coffee being and I don't think any less of them because I work on a La Marzocco and they don't. We just have different methods of training and different business models.
Barista in the Wild, Part 4: A Relationship With Espresso
I though they already had a super automatic machine before the Mastraina, the ones I see at Safeway with the more square hopper lids? Why buy new machines then close down a bunch of stores 6 months later because of budget costs? It would have been easier to tell that machine manufacture to take a hike. Like what are they going to do?
"I suppose when you have over 150,000 employees working in stores with such a high turnover rate, the time, effort and maintenance required for a manual machine isn't worth it. Pushing buttons cuts down on hours in training time, leaving employees to study recipes and milk steaming methods." As a former Starbucks employee, this sentence mocks my position... true I worked on the La Marzocco machine, but it make us Starbucks Baristas out to be fast-food McDonalds employees.
