@KingBoo
It's definitely my favorite of the big three (McDonald's, BK, and Wendy's), but that's about all we have in the Boston area, so I can't really compare it to any of the big chains that people get in other cities. Of course, none of them compare to real handmade non-mass-produced burgers...

So in your opinion is Wendy's the best of the national fast food chains in the US, or just your favorite? I've noticed you mention them a few times in other posts as well. They are definitely my favorite. One cool think I learned that because they make the burgers relatively fresh that after (I think 5 mins) if the patty isn't used it's reground up for the chili. Smart thinking! Out of all the national fast food chains they are probably my favorite and am just wondering what others think.

There's a lot of great food in Colombia, but one of the best burgers I have ever had was at one of the El Corral "Gourmet" locations in Bogota - more similar to an upscale Hamburger Hamlet. I Think it was called the "Gaucho". Great juicy grilled burger, cooked to order (Med. Rare in my case), topped with a split grilled chorizo topped with chimichurri sauce. Amazing!!!

To be fair, this was a very unusual McDonald's burger - one of the best looking I've ever seen. Most of the time, they're squashed and greasy. Although, as for the bun and the pickle, I'm pretty sure that it's exactly the same everywhere in the world, so if you don't like that sweet bun or strange pickles, you're just out of luck with McD's...

I wish, wish, wish that the photo of the McDonald's burger was a true representation of what you actually get when you buy a McDonald's in the UK. Usually, (ok, well ALWAYS!) you get a nasty sweetish-flavoured, soggy bun, with a luke-warm piece of grey flannel inside, complete with bone and gristle, and a strange-tasting pickle topping. YUCK!!! Why can't we have what you American's have. eh??? Life is just not fair!

@Susquehanna
Who doesn't like hamburgers?
Baranquilla is a nice city, though I didn't get to spend much time in it. Cartagena is awesome. If you go to a coastal city, I'd definitely go there, and make sure that you get out to the islands. It's rare that you can find a Caribbean island with almost no tourists on it. We had our own stretch of sand with no other people in sight for hours (except the kids walking around trying to sell you oysters - I didn't trust them. The oysters, not the kids).

@J.Kenji Alt:
It is supremely cool that you enjoy Everyman food (apparently in large quantities), considering your astute grasp of sophisticated cooking. And I'm sure you enjoyed the Colombian landscape and culture! It's a beautiful country and now that las FARC have lost their stronghold, tourism should increase. Planning to head down to Peru in the future and perhaps I'll hit Barranquilla or another one of Colombia's Caribbean coast towns before I get there.

Yes - I should have mentioned that. McDonald's and BK have only been in Colombia for a few years, and from what I've heard, Burger King has gone out of business, and McDonald's is still struggling to catch on.
Though I think it's not simply a matter of food quality - it's a matter of American style fast-food service being relatively foreign there. McDonald's is only really popular here because it's extraordinarily quick, and has things like drive-throughs. If speed and convenience are not your only considerations, as they are not in Colombia, then you've no incentive to choose McDonald's over a higher quality, "real" restaurant. When people go out for lunch, they plan to take the time away from their desk to go out, sit down, enjoy their meal, then come back - McDonald's just doesn't fit into this lifestyle.

i'm definitely a presto guy and their special sauces to dip your fries in are the best.
but over all Colombia is not a fast food burger places mcdonalds and burger king have only been there for less that 10 years or so .

He's a chef as well. Slaughter is part of the trade. Respect it or go check out Rachel Ray.

Could you compare some South American style burger joints located in the USA with their counterparts in Colombia? E.g. Xtasis in Jackson Heights, NY.
