5ive Steak: A Meaty, Beaty, Big and Bouncy Burger in the Middle of JFK Airport
"While I am still an advocate of the plain white bun for burgers and generally have disdain for the use of brioche buns, the one at 5ive Steak is up to the task"
What do you mean by this? A supermarket white bun such as from Wonder bread would be good?

Where to Drink for Free on Your Birthday
has anyone been to haven on 51st street? it's a new-ish bar/lounge in my neighborhood that i just checked out with my girlfriend last week. they have $13 pitchers of mixed drinks (sangria, cosmos) and an open bar and burlesque show on thursdays too. i love an open bar. pretty awesome crowd too!
New York's Best Cheeseburger, Take 100: The Little Owl
As I mentioned in earlier blog thi is the best burger I had in amonth long stay in NYC in May. Beat out Minetta Tavern, Shake Shack, Corner Bistro Dresslers and Burger Place. Leave the bacon off with the quality of the beef and the great bun the bacon is a distraction.

Best Colombian Arepas in New York???
El Cocotero @ 228 W. 18th St; I found it through Yelp and really loved their arepas and sangria—the space is really good for a late afternoon meal with friends
Best Colombian Arepas in New York???
I like to go to a restaurant called La Nueva in Queens. I think its on 35th and 82nd or something, 1 avenue parallel to Roosevelt Avenue. They have much more than just arepas, but that is what I always get! Their fried yuca rocks, in case you are interested.
And for the record, the service at Caracas is bad, and last time I went I waited 1 hour for an arepa with premade ingredients. Needless to say, I won't be going back anytime soon.
Best Colombian Arepas in New York???
The larger Seba Seba on 37th Ave. will give you and your friends more room to enjoy them, and you'll find many other Colombian businesses in the neighborhood, too (I like Aqui Colombia Antojitos). For a detour to Cafecito Bogota, in Greenpoint, and its prodigious arepas montadas, weekend brunch might be your best bet.
5ive Steak: A Meaty, Beaty, Big and Bouncy Burger in the Middle of JFK Airport
@sledneck Yes, absolutely. A generic white enriched bun is the perfect vehicle for a burger in my opinion.
Top 10 Grilled Burgers in NYC?
I don't know it they are griddled or grilled, but Pipers Kilt up in Inwood (one of three locations) has my gold standard for pub burgers. I just cant believe they haven't been written up here yet?
Top 10 Grilled Burgers in NYC?
I don't know if they are grilled or griddled, but Pipers' Kilt in Inwood has by gold standardurger I have ever had.
And PFY PJ Clark's burgers are definately griddled, cause while I was eating oysters with my Guiness last week I peeked in the kitchen and saw a bunch of burgers lined-up and staying warm on the griddle. I just hope they don't sit there too long. 5 guys are griddled too.
Where to Drink for Free on Your Birthday
god this is awesome. just a month ago on my bday i recall asking if i got anything for free at the Green Mill where i was eating, and they offered me a shitty "sundae" with just ice cream and chocolate syrup, and i was like "uhhh could i trade this for a shot or something?" sadly, no. fortunately my friends bought me drinks all night and i got a free shot at the bar later.
Where to Drink for Free on Your Birthday
the second chance saloon also lets you drink for free on your birthday. it is my favorite bar and houses, in my opinion, the best jukebox in new york city. 659 grand street between leonard and manhattan, in brooklyn. go!

Man, my birthday just passed. Oh well, I'm tucking this info away for later. Thanks!
Roger Ebert on His Love for Steak 'n Shake
Looking at their balance sheet shows a lot. SnS has 60.3 million dollars in current assest but they have but they have 76.3 million in current liabilities. In todays economic climate, I just don't see any bank lending 16 million dollars to SnS. Hence they will have to start shutting down many of their stores and selling what they can. On there sales, SnS can expect to get a small percentage of their property plant and equipment booked amount. Hence the future does not look bright for steak and shake. Whether they will be able to reinvent themselves ala Hardees is unknown. But clearly this is not a company that I would be investing in. And for that matter I will not be eating there either as there are many superior places that actually know how to make a great hamburger and a rich thick and creamy milk shake
Roger Ebert on His Love for Steak 'n Shake
Steak 'n Shake is definitely in my top 3 burger chains. Every time I head west into Pittsburgh, I make sure to make at least one stop there (usually the midnight snack). The burgers are excellent, the shakes are awesome, and unlike yabooo, I've always have good service. I thought the fries were the most disappointing part (go for the chili instead), and I have noticed the portions shrinking as well. Bring back the goods, SnS! And continue eastward and give Five Guys a run for their money!
Roger Ebert on His Love for Steak 'n Shake
Yahoo - maybe you had a bad visit, but their shakes usually are pretty good. Also, they've been going strong for 70+ years so I don't think they'll be out of business soon.
Roger Ebert on His Love for Steak 'n Shake
Let's get serious here. They don't have steaks and their shakes are terrible. The service sucks and they will likely be out of business in a couple of years. I'm sorry but after moving to the midwest and hearing so much about S & S, I have constantly been disappointed with them although I must admit that they have good fries
Roger Ebert on His Love for Steak 'n Shake
I don't consider S & S to be a "fast food" place. Any place that serves on china with metal utensils is not a fast food place to me. Anyhow - they do have good burgers, and as someone mentioned above - they are getting smaller. I usually go for the triple cheese with a salad and fries, and a wonderful fountain cherry coke.
Roger Ebert on His Love for Steak 'n Shake
I have a love hate with SnS, the burgers are good but the service is always terrible and they rarely get my order right. The most despicable act is the fact that they have started downsizing their food. They have reduced the amount of beef in each patty and to hide this they downsized their buns. They also have reduced the portion size of their chili and their sides. I know times are tight but I really think they could cut costs elsewhere instead of reducing the amount of food you get.
Roger Ebert on His Love for Steak 'n Shake
Steak'n'Shake is truly an institution. I've converted many non-midwesterners to believers in its deliciousness (not to mention that said deliciousness is available 24 hours!). for me, the best dishes are the Patty/Chicken/Frisco Melt & the Chili Mac Supreme. I'm not a huge fans of the fries on their own, but the cheese fries (made with only the fakest liquid cheese sauce) are amazing with ketchup. if I ever move out of the heartland I'm not sure what I'll do with myself.

BS, looks like a double????
Roger Ebert on His Love for Steak 'n Shake
one of the most perfect looking burgers I have had...
Roger Ebert on His Love for Steak 'n Shake
Its ok,...I heard about it before I moved to the Kansas area and now had it a couple times. I do feel like you have to order a double to really get the value out of eating one because of the "smashed" patties. BUT it had everything messy known to man on it along with melted cheese so it held my interest! lol
I unfortunately was not a fan of the ULTRA thin shoestring fries (not to mention they were SUPER greasy!).
Overall, I'd eat it once a year,...
BACK TO YOU ROGER!!
Top 10 Grilled Burgers in NYC?
I have hesitated for a very long time to mention my favorite burger in the city, but finally i realize, why not share the love? The burger at Cafe Loup on 13th street is phenomenal. It's huge, fantastic meat quality, and perfectly cooked. It's a classic burger, no fancy shit: subtle spice (just salt, I reckon); nothing but bloody, juicy meaty goodness. (And chedder if you're into that sort of thing.) Absolutely delicious. It is arguably "better" than all of these burgers, with the exception of Spotted Pig's. I mean, that's just the no-competition antichrist of burgers.
Top 10 Grilled Burgers in NYC?
Thanks, Nick - It's about time Wollensky's Grill got involved in the top tier. It was always pretty good meat, but when they re-worked it a year or two ago it skyrocketed up on my list. The true test of a top burger is one that needs no ketchup - and, though I love ketchup, it would take away from WG's superior product.
