Via Emilia is a family-friendly Italian. Very good pastas, particularly the first-rate lasagna. No special kids' menu. They don't take reservations, but if you dine early, you should have no trouble getting a table. Cash only.

Blue Smoke, the popular barbecue spot, has a child's menu.

You don't say exactly when you will be visiting NYC. But if the Shake Shack (currently closed for the season) has re-opened, and the weather is conducive to being outdoors, go there for their delicious burgers, hot dogs, fries, soft ice cream, etc. Lots of tables and chairs where you can enjoy your food al fresco in Madison Square Park. (Note: The park has a children's playgound.)

Just don't go to Freeman's. Here's a thread from my site last fall after a visit with children.

Otto could be good if you go early (6ish) and sit in the back. I imagine most places would be fine if you're there before 7. Much later and some places might no longer be appropriate.

I am looking for sit-down places that have great food and will allow children in the restaurant and/or places with a great kids menu - although my son almost always orders grilled cheese. Thanks for the comments :)
