Indian Alphonso Mangos

I can confirm that Spice Corner (indian grocery store at 28th and Lexington) has them. I bet the other grocery stores around there have them too. I didn't buy any on the weekend as I was put off by the price but the NPR piece this morning made me want to go back and buy some!

If you had a food cart/truck...

I would love to have my own cart. I'd take a lead from the street vendors of the India and try a chaat cart that are found all over India. Or maybe a noodle cart like in Hong Kong? Ah... the possibilities are endless :)

Conveyor Belt Sushi in Manhattan?

There is a place called Yushi on 47th between park and lex... the conveyor belt is new but you choose your food from the conveyor belt display and then they prepare it fresh. I haven't eaten off the conveyor belt but I do like their other stuff for a cheap, healthy lunch

How do you use Goat Cheese?

I love it in salads - my current fave is: orange segments, red onions, baby spinach, pine nuts and goats cheese. I also love it on pizza.

Pizza With a Knife & Fork?

Pick it up and eat it - if it's a giant NYC slice, then fold. I've tried the fancy, knife and fork thing, especially in sit-down restaurants and it just doesn't do it for me - piza needs to be picked up!

In New York, there is a trendy food bar (Fig and Olive) that serves the following crostini's. I haven't tried all of them but they sound delicious.

Mushroom, Reggiano, Porcini Oil
Avocado, Radish, Pine Nuts
Manchego, Fig Spread, Marcona Almond
Prosciutto, Ricotta, Fig, Olive, Walnut
Bresaola, Ricotta, Honey, Eggplant
Shrimp, Avocado, Cilantro, Tomato
Salmon, Ricotta, Citrus, Cilantro
Boquerones, Tomato, Charmoula

Cheap Meals!

I don't have a specific recipe but pilafs with veggies, lentils are cheap and easy to make (typically, one pot, veggies, rice and stock in a pot and simmer).

Also, filling salads are a good option too - try using different grains/lentils to get more out of them e.g. quinoa salad with black beans listed on this site or cous cous salad, chickpea salad etc.

Fun Flours

I regularly use a few different flours - chickpea flour is wonderful. i'll use it once a week for something or other - it's great for pakoras (indian style veggie fritters), but also makes yummt savoury pancakes (just mix flour with water, add salt pepper and any vggies you like + cilantro and onion, cook like a pancake)

Semolina makes great porridge, sweet or savoury - it is a breakfast staple in our house. It's also very good in pizza dough for texture and crunchy. I also make a steamed dumpling with semolina using a mixture of yoghurt and semolina.

I recently purchased rice flour and made some crepes with it. Also a great rice pudding like dessert.

I like to experiment :)

I'm talking TOFU throwdown here people - help me out!

This website is excellent of innovative vegan recipes and suggestion - http://blog.fatfreevegan.com/ The author incorporates tofu into 'typical' meals. I made her vegan lasagne on the weekend and it was the best (it uses tofu instead of ricotta)

Zaytinya in DC

I ate there at the end of August and enjoyed the food and had alovely waitress, who was easy going and knowledgable on the menu/wine list. We lingered for about 3.5 hours and weren't made to feel rushed.

I put ____ in my yogurt

I like to top my home made bircher museli with plain non-fat yoghurt (trader joes brand) - a yummy, healthy start to the day.

'American' foods people from other cultures like and dislike

Having recently moved to New York from Australia, i have developed a list of food items to avoid and write them off as an 'only in america' speciality.
dislike
- the obsession with peanut butter - i don't get it, i never got the whole obsession with PB&J - i even tried it once to see if I was missing something - but no - it's just weird. I can't believe that there are ppl who eat it by the spoonful
- store-bought loaves of bread. I mean the sliced stuff, it is so sugary and sweet and never toasts to a crisp - it's always soft and chewy - why o why? I have stopped buying bread from the supermarket
- pre-sweetened cereal and granola. I wish you could just buy an unsweetened museli with wholegrains, dried fruits and nuts, like we can in Australia. I now make my own.
- the terribel coffee - how people drink a large cup full is beyond me!

Likes
- berries are so cheap: in Australia punnets of blueberries and rasberries were so expensive (think $4-$5 for a small tub) that I had never eaten them before coming here. I love that the street fruit vendors sell them for $2-$3 here.
- waffles and bagels - yum!
- street vendors in NYC - i love the diversity of random food i can get from street vendors, in the last few weeks i've had pizza, indian, mexican and gourmet desserts

... thats all i can think of at the moment.

Help me pack my lunch, please - a Super Challenge.

if you get bored easily, you might find this useful... i roast a whole bunch of seasonal veggies on the weekend e.g mushrooms, sweet potato, eggplant, asparagus, onions etc. I then use this as a base for different lunch/dinner recipes e.g
- mix through pasta with some herbs, olives and fetta;
- mix through cous cous with cumin and lemon juice;
- roast veggie wrap with baby spinach and goats cheese;
- roast veggie pizza - put veggies on a pita, top with olives, pine nuts, cheese and bake.

varying the herbs, spices totally changes the flavour of each dish.

Good luck!
