Ed Levine's Serious Weigh-In, Week 160: No More "Diet" For Me

I disagree with Simon and Nicholas, this isn't a cop out. At no point did Ed say he was no longer going to stop making healthy choices and checking his progress on Thinner. He's just not calling it a 'diet' anymore. The word 'diet' can often mean just a temporary change in how a person eats in order to reach a certain goal, whereas Ed's approach to losing weight and making healthy choices is in no way temporary. He's changing his relationship with food and how he eats it, so it makes sense that he no longer calls it a 'diet.'

So he's not copping out, he's just redefining or renaming his journey from being unhealthy to healthy.

July 4th weekend, what are you making?

These menus sound amazing! Can we all combine forces and have one giant, SE barbeque? I'm pretty sure I'd die from either happiness or a heart attack, maybe both.

This is my first 4th in London, so I'm cooking for my American and British friends alike tomorrow afternoon:

Homemade guacamole and salsa with tortilla chips
Tofu, halloumi, and shrimp kebabs with cilantro citrus marinade
Roseanne Cash's potato salad
Grilled corn on the cob with herb butter
Jalapeno & cheddar cornbread
Fresh fruit salad
Salted, brown butter rice crispy treats
And homemade chocolate chip cookie ice cream sandwiches

I'm so excited to start cooking tonight!

Happy 4th everyone!

Cook the Book: 'The Boozy Baker'

Oh man, I've made so many dishes with booze in the past two years, from Guinness in chocolate cake to Bailey's in frosting to you-name-it in chocolate ganache. My favourite mixer is a baked good. But I think my all-time favourite is a simple bourbon whipped cream. You get the beautiful taste of bourbon that slightly sweetens the silky base of heavy cream. You can put it on absolutely anything. Or just eat it out of the mixing bowl, like I do.

Have you ever just been completly insulted preparing a meal?

I've been very lucky with my friends and family being exceptionally grateful and open to my cooking (especially since I'm a vegetarian and they aren't) however I have to deal with the salt addiction too. My mom always pours salt and pepper on her meals before trying them. It drives me crazy, but I figure if that's the worst thing she does, I shouldn't complain. :)

Cook the Book: 'The Vegetarian Option'

Halloumi cheese. It has a high melting temperature, so you can grill it, fry it, put it in sandwiches, salads, or just eat it by itself. It's completely versatile and my most favourite item to bring to barbeques. I'm planning to use it for shish kebabs for my next gathering.

For the laddies- Hottest Food Network Dude?

Jamie Oliver-no contest. Yes, he's cute, and his accent makes my knees go all wobbly. But he also hires teenagers to work in his restaurants so they can learn real skills to get them on track to a great career. He advocates better school lunches for British schools. He's against factory farming and urges people to buy free range meat and dairy. He's absolutely crazy over his wife and three daughters. And if that wasn't enough, he cooks simple, delicious, and accessible meals that anyone can make to encourage people to cook more at home. He's sexy both inside and out. I admire him so much.

Do you like cooking to music?

Music is a must for when I cook and bake. I always put my laptop on the counter beside me (with a piece of plastic wrap over it for protection) and blast whatever I'm in the mood for. I've only tried cooking/baking a few times without music, mostly because I tend to mess something up or stress out. I especially love having music playing while I'm entertaining in the kitchen. I think it puts everyone at ease (along with a nice glass of wine).

Large Movie Popcorn with Butter: 1,220 Calories

Since I've moved out to Los Angeles it seems like sneaking food into a theater here hasn't been that big of a deal. The theater I usually go to is part of an outdoor mall area with several different food establishments surrounding it. We almost always go eat before we go to a movie, and if I have a diet coke from Rubio's in my hand as I go into the movie, no one seems to mind. So maybe it's a little different out here?

As for food, I've brought in a subway sandwich before, squished down in my not-so-large purse. And no, it wasn't a five dollar footlong.

Ed Levine's Serious Diet, Week 54: What Kind of a Diet Am I On?

This is so inspirational, and I'm proud of you listening to your body and not joining some sort of fad diet. That's the thing about the word "diet"-it seems to mean something temporary, and with most fad diets, they're supposed to be temporary. This is mostly because the body will shut down if you only feed it just one type of food or deprive it of a certain type of food (ie. The Atkin's diet, restricting the amount of carbs you eat).

Although you're calling this a diet, you're actually making a lifestyle change, which is not temporary. And you know your habits and body well enough that you're making this change through realistic goals that you know you can obtain. I believe portion control is the biggest problem with the typical American diet, and even adjusting this one aspect of how you eat can make a huge difference for your health.

So in short, you rock! And I appreciate you sharing this very personal journey with us.

What are your favorite products from Trader Joe's?

I don't think I've seen this on here yet, but the one thing that I ALWAYS bought when I shopping there was the box of espresso-filled chocolates. Not the chocolate-covered espresso beans, but chocolates filled with LIQUID ESPRESSO. Soooo amazing, and I can no longer find them :(.

Besides that, I always find myself buying the frozen samosas, they're low-fat no-hormones cheeses, and their tasty quinoa bread. I also love to snack on their frozen edamame.
