Cook the Book: 'Giada's Kitchen'

Besides a big pot of slow-simmered sauce, I love throwing together a quick sauce with whatever veggies I have on hand and a can of crushed tomatoes.

Win Tix to the SWEETest Event Ever at the New York City Wine & Food Fest

Whatever I happen to be eating at the time, because the fact that I'm eating it means I'm enjoying a meal in New York, which doesn't happen that often.

Kitschy Recipes

My Nana makes this dessert she calls Rice Dainty - cold rice mixed with lightly whipped cream, marshmallows, pineapple, and coconut flakes. It's surprisingly delicious.

Your Typical Breakfast: Weekday and Weekend

On weekdays or any day I need to eat and run, I beat an egg with a big dollop of salsa and then pour that onto a flat plate and microwave it. Once it's set, I wrap it in a tortilla, grab a travel mug of coffee and I'm out the door.

On weekends, it's either cereal or pancakes. I seem to prefer big breakfasty meals at any other time besides the morning.

Yeah. Pittsburgh.

When I visited for work, we mainly ate at chain restaurants. But I have heard amazing things about Primanti Brothers.

Cook the Book: Nigella Express

Homemade pesto, frozen, or purchased pesto, jarred.

What to cook/eat when you're tired and stressed?

This is kind of sad...but there are a lot of days when I come home feeling EXACTLY like that and the only thing I want to make/eat is a big bowl of peas & carrots. Sometimes I thrown in some corn or kale if I have it. All veggies start frozen, are microwaved and then I throw in a big hunk of butter and some garlic powder. Sometimes, if I'm feeling a little more motivated and can stand to wait for water to boil, I'll make some pasta, throw in the peas & carrots towards the end and then mix the whole thing with pesto & cheese.

During the summer, I like to grab a rotisserie chicken from the supermarket and make a big salad with romaine and veggies.

Also, I don't know if this will help, but I find that I get motivated by watching cooking shows - maybe you could listen to food podcasts on your way home?

My favorite use for ricotta is _____

I like having a tub around for a quick pasta dinner. I boil up some pasta, throw in some peas towards the end, and then mix it with ricotta, pesto, and a little olive oil.

Emergency HUNGER ATTACK Food?

Luna bars! I keep one in my purse at all times, just in case.

From Talk

Is there a food trauma in your past?

Unsweetened apple sauce. I hated taking medicine as a child, so my mom would smash baby aspirin and mix it into the apple sauce. So, so bitter. I can eat sweetened apple sauce now, but the thought of unsweetened just makes me gag.

From Talk

_____ looks better than it tastes

Those fruit tarts with the clear glaze over them. They're never as good as they look.

From Talk

What's your best "retro" recipe?

My Nana's spaghetti sauce, my Grandmom's pound cake, and my Mom's tonkatsu.

If I could find a recipe for beef stew that got close enough to Grandmom's, that would be up there too.

Greek menu suggestions with halloumi cheese

I have the UK version of Joy of Cooking and it has a really easy chicken dish that they claim is Greek-inspired. You make a bed of onion rings (as in, onions that have been sliced into rings, not the deep fried wonders) that have been tossed with olive oil, salt, pepper & rosemary, put some chicken pieces on top, then cover it all with more of the onion rings. Bake it til the chicken is done. You could also add a little fresh lemon.

Recently, I acquired a taste for _____

Spicy foods. I blame kimchee and Indian food.

From Serious Eats

Cook the Book: 'The Martha Stewart Living Cookbook: The Original Classics'

I've used a recipe from her magazine for sweet potatoes roasted with butter and maple syrup twice, but sung its praises often. It also turned me to the wonders of real maple syrup.

Emergency Turkey Day plans -- Help!

I agree with the votes for turkey breast. Last year I joined my brother in Ireland for Thanksgiving and we roasted sweet and regular potatoes under a turkey breast. It's much easier than fretting over an entire bird! Add in a nice salad, some cranberry sauce, and a steamed green vegetable and you've got a meal!

I've never really understood the appeal of ...

Mole sauce, fake banana flavoring, and dried coconut.

How do you celebrate your birthday?

I'm another Scorpio in this crowd, my birthday is the week before Thanksgiving. Unfortunately, this means that it's always fallen right in the busiest time, school-wise. This year is no different, but hopefully it's my last year in school for a while! My family's tradition is similar as the ones above, the birthday girl or boy gets to choose a restaurant or a meal. This year, because of the aforementioned madness, I'm just going to have a small dinner out at a new Mexican place nearby with my parents and friend to celebrate the actual day. Then, the following week when my brother is home, we'll go to Sang Kee, a Peking duck place in Philly that I'm obsessed with. It's become my "go-to" place for birthday dinners the past couple of years.

I love making veggie chili. Just as comforting as the meaty one my mom used to make.

Cook the Book: 'Almost Meatless'

I started a diet at the beginning of the year, and in the recipe book, there was a fabulous veggie chili. I make that every week and, seriously, I eat it at least three times for lunch in a week. So good!

An organic, cage-free egg cooked sunny-side-up has been my recent go-to dish for any meal. I like to top the egg with grated quality Parm, lots of cracked pepper and serve with crunchy toast and a little salad with a tangy vinaigrette.

My wife's tortilla soup. I think it's vegetarian, but she'll add chicken to mine only, but it's not even needed. She would like to go vegetarian but I say no. Maybe this book would persuade me.
