Weekend Cook and Tell: Pies Reconsidered

i make Cornish Pasties, which was considered to be the staple diet of miners and farmers around 1910.?
Its a mixture of minced beef, diced potatoes, carrots, onion, swede, mixed herbs, and beef stock.
You put a portion into a circle of shortcrust pastry, pulling the sides to join at the top ,and crimp together, brush with beaten egg ,and baked in a medium oven for around 1 hour.
This is great to eat in the winter months.

Do you cook for your pets?

i always cook fresh meat for my 2 little dogs(Bichon Frese, both rescue),and i mix green vegetables with it,they have stewing steak,ox heart, chicken and fish.
When i read what is put in tins of dog food, i,m not surprised my dogs wont eat it.!
They also have a liking for coffee with cream, and so every day they must have their coffee 'fix'.

how did you learn to cook?

I was brought up on a farm in an English village ,and my Mum was a wonderful plain cook, and i would spend all my time watching, helping and gleaning knowledge.
Everything was made from scratch, and my Mum made pastry to die for,she also was a great breadmaker, and unfortunatly i never really took notes of how she made her 'dough cakes' ,they were delicious, and i,ve never found any recipe like hers,so sadly i will never taste doughcakes like it again.

I now find cooking and baking my favourite way of relaxing, and i,m quite adventurous in that i weigh nothing, and make up many things as i go along.!
Thankfully most dishes are successful.

Weekend Cook and Tell: Best Meals of 2009

I roasted rib of beef for Christmas Day,with roast potatoes, sprouts, pea,s,cauliflower cheese.

Then we had a 'harrods'christmas pudding (i personally find it too heavy),but i made my own sweet mincemeat for mince pies, and we ate them with clotted cream and double cream.

What Londoners Think of New York Food: The 'Madison Avenue Bagel'

i think its impossible to generalise as there are great bagels in London and New York, but in both cities it pays to search them out,but the best i have had is in 'Harrods' coffee house, just opposite the store.
