Drinking the Bottom Shelf: Hiram Walker Pumpkin Spice and Caramel Apple Liqueurs

@jcruz in New England, one does not admit to being a Red Sox fan, but is just known to be one (as it should be).

I say this as a kid from Connecticut whose father supports every New York team (not Giants and not Mets, obviously, because WHY), even the Rangers for Christ's sake.

Drinking the Bottom Shelf: Natty Ice vs. Milwaukee's Best Ice

See, I live in Somerville, so it's more of a question of whether I should bring crystal meth or crack cocaine to the public pool. To sell to middle schoolers, of course, nobody swims in the Somerville municipal pool.

Slice Poll: Do You Order Half-and-Half Pizzas?

I hate when people order half-and-half pizzas, because I am so bad at making them. I once got anxious about making a half-vegetarian half-meat pizza, because what if one side got more, and a fight broke out? What if I did not make it perfectly half-and-half and the vegetarians had meat on their pizza and couldn't eat it? Also, is the vegetarian half of a pie with meat on it even vegetarian?

In other news, I have anxiety issues.

Weekend Cook and Tell: Salad Days

I have terrible camera skills, but today I had a salad of brown rice, chicken, spinach, and beets. I tossed it with a vinaigrette I made out of balsamic vinegar and orange-infused olive oil. It was awesome!

The Food Lab: Baking Powder vs. Baking Soda

I made zucchini muffins today, and forgot the baking soda (also the baking powder, but we don't own any and I never remember at the grocery store because I get distracted in the cereal aisle) and the results could be described as fudge-like.

Pizza Girl: Crazy Delivery Stories

We have some weird regulars. There is a guy who likes you to deliver to his open window instead of the door, and the couple whom nobody has ever seen because they pay over the phone with a credit card and order that the pizza be left in the hallway.

None of my stories are too crazy. I did get hit on by a security guard once when I was delivering to the nursing home; he kept saying, "You are SO ADORABLE! We should see a movie!" which I thought was a lame pick up technique.

Freezing pizza dough....how and when?

I have frozen pizza dough after 24 hours in the fridge without negative consequences (of course, I always store my yeast in the freezer so I don't understand the whole "freezing kills some yeast" thing). Just defrost it overnight and let it come to room temperature for about an hour before you do anything to it.

Pizza Girl: Statistical Analysis of a Delivery Shift: Part 3

I make a flat $6 rate whether delivering or in the store. The one time I got a $13 tip, I wanted to say, "Thanks for bringing my pay up to minimum wage for the day!" It became a story of legendary proportions when I would tell it to someone. "Did I ever tell you about the time I made a $13 tip? It was in the spring, and it was a hot day, the first nice weather in a long time..."

What's a Reasonable Automatic Gratuity?

The only reason I object to an auto-gratuity is that it seems like the establishment wants their employees to not get stiffed, but it doesn't want to be the one that pays them. I get paid below minimum right now and work mostly for tips, and so I would love an automatic gratuity- however, I would love my boss to pay me a living wage even more.

What's the Weirdest Sandwich You Make?

In high school, you could make yourself a chip sandwich for a dollar. Crushed chips on a buttered bun. I don't care for room-temp butter, so I just had the chips and bun. My arteries are still kind of mad.

Is Your Pet Named After a Food (or Food Critic)?

I have a cat named Walt Whitman, half-named after Whitman's Samplers because he was a dark chocolate brown when we got him.

And now that his coat got darker with age, I just call him Wally Lamb, which is not food related unless Wally Lamb makes you hungry. He just makes me cry.

From Talk

the best place to let kneaded bread rise?

I usually preheat my oven to 170 F (the lowest setting), let it warm up a little, and then turn it off and put the dough in there when it feels warm but not hot inside. If I'm using the oven for something else, I just put it on one of the burners. Some heat comes out of our burners and will help the dough rise.

Jamie Oliver's Food Revolution (Ep. 3): 'French Fries Are Vegetables!'

Look, if some guy comes up to me and calls me a "foxy young chick," I am going to be grossed out and not want to talk to him, especially if his reason why I should be concerned about eating french fries is that they'll make me fat. If you focus on the fact that french fries are energy-dense but nutrient-poor, I am more likely to listen.

Best (and healthiest) way to cook vegetables

Steaming limits the loss of water-soluble vitamins; most vitamins are water soluble, and the water-soluble vitamins can be lost through extensive contact with heat, acid, alkaline, or water.

Fat-soluble vitamins (A, D, E, and K) will not be lost through extensive contact with water, but it doesn't matter whether or not they are cooked with fat. To take in fat-soluble vitamins, at least a small amount fat has to be consumed along with the vitamin-containing food.
