Poll: What's Your Favorite Grocery Chain?

Safeway went out of business in the 70s. I know where I can find a Whole Foods and a Trader Joes, but they are an 85 mile drive. I've never heard of any of the others. Are you sure these are actual grocery stores?

Served: Why Tipping Makes Everyone Uncomfortable

I typically tip $5 per $20 of the total bill (including the tax). I tip that much even if the service was atrocious. If the same server doesn't do better the next time I'm in, then it might affect their tip, but I've never had a second bad experience from someone. They seem to remember the money. Pizza deliverymen treat me like I'm some of god.

Sometimes though, I'm feeling evil...

"Do you think I should tip you?" Servers are generally unprepared to answer that question. It scares them, and they don't know what to say. Most will, if I press the subject, say that yes, I should tip them.

"How much tip do you want?" No one has ever answered this question, no matter how much I press the issue. Which is a shame for them, because I'd probably give them what they asked for, up to $100 or 100%, whichever is higher.

And yes, both those questions are incredibly cruel to servers.

Top 10 Celebrity Chef Earners: Who Isn't on the List?

Initially, it looks like the quality of the person is inversely proportional to the salary. Except that Bobby Flay is at the bottom, and Mario Batali isn't.

Recommended Chinese Cookbooks?

The Breath Of A Wok is probably the best Chinese cookbook I own.

Fushia Dunlop's two books are both great, but her Revelutionary cookbook is better than the first.

Cook the Book: 'Beard on Food'

I have a picture of myself at age seven standing on a chair to cook spaghetti, but it wasn't until I saw Martin Yan on public television in the 80s that I really started to get interested in cooking. I watched his show every day, and I tried to learn to cook Chinese food. Chinese food was new and mysterious. My mom cooked "American" food from her 1960's era cookbooks, and I lived in the Southwest so I had access to Mexican food, but nothing else. When Julia Child passed away recently I saw a lot of tribute to her and a lot of personal stories about how changed cooking. I never saw her show, but I immediately recognized the parallel of her legacy with people a little older than me versus the TV food personality I first saw.

Sunday Night Soups: Beef Chili con Carne With Meat (Gurgling Cod Remix)

I have to agree with the above comment. Beef chile with meat with meat just seems odd. Also, this is an 'y frijoles' recipe, since it has frijoles in it.

Green Chili with Pork

Pozole isn't made with ground pork. It is a stew made from pigs head and trotters, with the diced brains added back in just before serving.

And your "green chile" recipes doesn't appear to have any green chile in it! It looks like a jalapeño recipe instead!
